नीतिवचन 20

1 १ दाखमधु ठट्ठा करनेवाला और मदिरा हल्ला मचानेवाली है; जो कोई उसके कारण चूक करता है, वह बुद्धिमान नहीं।

Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whoever is deceived by it is not wise.

2 २ राजा का क्रोध, जवान सिंह के गर्जन समान है; जो उसको रोष दिलाता है वह अपना प्राण खो देता है।

The fear of a king [is] as the roaring of a lion: [whoever] provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own soul.

3 ३ मुकद्दमे से हाथ उठाना, पुरुष की महिमा ठहरती है; परन्तु सब मूर्ख झगड़ने को तैयार होते हैं।

[It is] an honor for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

4 ४ आलसी मनुष्य शीत के कारण हल नहीं जोतता; इसलिए कटनी के समय वह भीख माँगता, और कुछ नहीं पाता।

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; [therefore] shall he beg in harvest, and [have] nothing.

5 ५ मनुष्य के मन की युक्ति अथाह तो है, तो भी समझवाला मनुष्य उसको निकाल लेता है।

Counsel in the heart of man [is like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

6 ६ बहुत से मनुष्य अपनी निष्ठा का प्रचार करते हैं; परन्तु सच्चा व्यक्ति कौन पा सकता है?

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

7 ७ वह व्यक्ति जो अपनी सत्यनिष्ठा पर चलता है, उसके पुत्र जो उसके पीछे चलते हैं, वे धन्य हैं।

The just [man] walketh in his integrity: his children [are] blessed after him.

8 ८ राजा जो न्याय के सिंहासन पर बैठा करता है, वह अपनी दृष्टि ही से सब बुराई को छाँट लेता है।

A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

9 ९ कौन कह सकता है कि मैंने अपने हृदय को पवित्र किया; अथवा मैं पाप से शुद्ध हुआ हूँ?

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

10 १० घटते-बढ़ते बटखरे और घटते-बढ़ते नपुए इन दोनों से यहोवा घृणा करता है।

Divers weights, [and] divers measures, both of them [are] alike abomination to the LORD.

11 ११ लड़का भी अपने कामों से पहचाना जाता है, कि उसका काम पवित्र और सीधा है, या नहीं।

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work [is] pure, and whether [it is] right.

12 १२ सुनने के लिये कान और देखने के लिये जो आँखें हैं, उन दोनों को यहोवा ने बनाया है।

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

13 १३ नींद से प्रीति न रख, नहीं तो दरिद्र हो जाएगा; आँखें खोल तब तू रोटी से तृप्त होगा।

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thy eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

14 १४ मोल लेने के समय ग्राहक, “अच्छी नहीं, अच्छी नहीं,” कहता है; परन्तु चले जाने पर बढ़ाई करता है।

[It is] naught, [it is] naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone, then he boasteth.

15 १५ सोना और बहुत से बहुमूल्य रत्न तो हैं; परन्तु ज्ञान की बातें अनमोल मणि ठहरी हैं।

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge [are] a precious jewel.

16 १६ किसी अनजान के लिए जमानत देनेवाले के वस्त्र ले और पराए के प्रति जो उत्तरदायी हुआ है उससे बँधक की वस्तु ले रख।

Take his garment that is surety [for] a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

17 १७ छल-कपट से प्राप्त रोटी मनुष्य को मीठी तो लगती है, परन्तु बाद में उसका मुँह कंकड़ों से भर जाता है।

Bread of deceit [is] sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

18 १८ सब कल्पनाएँ सम्मति ही से स्थिर होती हैं; और युक्ति के साथ युद्ध करना चाहिये।

[Every] purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

19 १९ जो लुतराई करता फिरता है वह भेद प्रगट करता है; इसलिए बकवादी से मेल जोल न रखना।

He that goeth about [as] a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

20 २० जो अपने माता-पिता को कोसता, उसका दिया बुझ जाता, और घोर अंधकार हो जाता है।

Whoever curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

21 २१ जो भाग पहले उतावली से मिलता है, अन्त में उस पर आशीष नहीं होती।

An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end of it shall not be blessed.

22 २२ मत कह, “मैं बुराई का बदला लूँगा;” वरन् यहोवा की बाट जोहता रह, वह तुझको छुड़ाएगा।

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; [but] wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

23 २३ घटते-बढ़ते बटखरों से यहोवा घृणा करता है, और छल का तराजू अच्छा नहीं।

Divers weights [are] an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance [is] not good.

24 २४ मनुष्य का मार्ग यहोवा की ओर से ठहराया जाता है; मनुष्य अपना मार्ग कैसे समझ सकेगा?

Man's goings [are] of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

25 २५ जो मनुष्य बिना विचारे किसी वस्तु को पवित्र ठहराए, और जो मन्नत मानकर पूछपाछ करने लगे, वह फंदे में फँसेगा।

[It is] a snare to the man [who] devoureth [that which is] holy, and after vows to make inquiry.

26 २६ बुद्धिमान राजा दुष्टों को फटकता है, और उन पर दाँवने का पहिया चलवाता है।

A wise king scatterreth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27 २७ मनुष्य की आत्मा यहोवा का दीपक है; वह मन की सब बातों की खोज करता है।

The spirit of man [is] the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

28 २८ राजा की रक्षा कृपा और सच्चाई के कारण होती है, और कृपा करने से उसकी गद्दी सम्भलती है।

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.

29 २९ जवानों का गौरव उनका बल है, परन्तु बूढ़ों की शोभा उनके पक्के बाल हैं।

The glory of young men [is] their strength: and the beauty of old men [is] the gray head.

30 ३० चोट लगने से जो घाव होते हैं, वे बुराई दूर करते हैं; और मार खाने से हृदय निर्मल हो जाता है।

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so [do] stripes the inward parts of the belly.
