नीतिवचन 16

1 १ मन की युक्ति मनुष्य के वश में रहती है, परन्तु मुँह से कहना यहोवा की ओर से होता है।

It is for man to prepare the soul, and for the Lord to govern the tongue.

2 २ मनुष्य का सारा चाल चलन अपनी दृष्टि में पवित्र ठहरता है, परन्तु यहोवा मन को तौलता है।

All the ways of a man are open to his eyes; the Lord is the one who weighs spirits.

3 ३ अपने कामों को यहोवा पर डाल दे, इससे तेरी कल्पनाएँ सिद्ध होंगी।

Open your works to the Lord, and your intentions will be set in order.

4 ४ यहोवा ने सब वस्तुएँ विशेष उद्देश्य के लिये बनाई हैं, वरन् दुष्ट को भी विपत्ति भोगने के लिये बनाया है।

The Lord has wrought all things because of himself. Likewise the impious is for the evil day.

5 ५ सब मन के घमण्डियों से यहोवा घृणा करता है; मैं दृढ़ता से कहता हूँ, ऐसे लोग निर्दोष न ठहरेंगे।

All the arrogant are an abomination to the Lord. Even if hand will be joined to hand, he is not innocent. The beginning of a good way is to do justice. And this is more acceptable with God than to immolate sacrifices.

6 ६ अधर्म का प्रायश्चित कृपा, और सच्चाई से होता है, और यहोवा के भय मानने के द्वारा मनुष्य बुराई करने से बच जाते हैं।

By mercy and truth, iniquity is redeemed. And by the fear of the Lord, one turns away from evil.

7 ७ जब किसी का चाल चलन यहोवा को भावता है, तब वह उसके शत्रुओं का भी उससे मेल कराता है।

When the ways of man will please the Lord, he will convert even his enemies to peace.

8 ८ अन्याय के बड़े लाभ से, न्याय से थोड़ा ही प्राप्त करना उत्तम है।

Better is a little with justice, than many fruits with iniquity.

9 ९ मनुष्य मन में अपने मार्ग पर विचार करता है, परन्तु यहोवा ही उसके पैरों को स्थिर करता है।

The heart of man disposes his way. But it is for Lord to direct his steps.

10 १० राजा के मुँह से दैवीवाणी निकलती है, न्याय करने में उससे चूक नहीं होती।

Foreknowledge is in the lips of the king. His mouth shall not err in judgment.

11 ११ सच्चा तराजू और पलड़े यहोवा की ओर से होते हैं, थैली में जितने बटखरे हैं, सब उसी के बनवाए हुए हैं।

Weights and scales are judgments of the Lord. And all the stones in the bag are his work.

12 १२ दुष्टता करना राजाओं के लिये घृणित काम है, क्योंकि उनकी गद्दी धर्म ही से स्थिर रहती है।

Those who act impiously are abominable to the king. For the throne is made firm by justice.

13 १३ धर्म की बात बोलनेवालों से राजा प्रसन्न होता है, और जो सीधी बातें बोलता है, उससे वह प्रेम रखता है।

Just lips are the will of kings. He who speaks honestly shall be loved.

14 १४ राजा का क्रोध मृत्यु के दूत के समान है, परन्तु बुद्धिमान मनुष्य उसको ठंडा करता है।

The indignation of a king is a herald of death. And the wise man will appease it.

15 १५ राजा के मुख की चमक में जीवन रहता है, और उसकी प्रसन्नता बरसात के अन्त की घटा के समान होती है।

In the cheerfulness of the king’s countenance, there is life. And his clemency is like belated rain.

16 १६ बुद्धि की प्राप्ति शुद्ध सोने से क्या ही उत्तम है! और समझ की प्राप्ति चाँदी से बढ़कर योग्य है।

Possess wisdom, for it is better than gold. And acquire prudence, for it is more precious than silver.

17 १७ बुराई से हटना धर्मियों के लिये उत्तम मार्ग है, जो अपने चाल चलन की चौकसी करता, वह अपने प्राण की भी रक्षा करता है।

The path of the just turns away from evils. He who guards his soul preserves his way.

18 १८ विनाश से पहले गर्व, और ठोकर खाने से पहले घमण्ड आता है।

Arrogance precedes destruction. And the spirit is exalted before a fall.

19 १९ घमण्डियों के संग लूट बाँट लेने से, दीन लोगों के संग नम्र भाव से रहना उत्तम है।

It is better to be humbled with the meek, than to divide spoils with the arrogant.

20 २० जो वचन पर मन लगाता, वह कल्याण पाता है, और जो यहोवा पर भरोसा रखता, वह धन्य होता है।

The learned in word shall find good things. And whoever hopes in the Lord is blessed.

21 २१ जिसके हृदय में बुद्धि है, वह समझवाला कहलाता है, और मधुर वाणी के द्वारा ज्ञान बढ़ता है।

Whoever is wise in heart shall be called prudent. And whoever is sweet in eloquence shall attain to what is greater.

22 २२ जिसमें बुद्धि है, उसके लिये वह जीवन का स्रोत है, परन्तु मूर्ख का दण्ड स्वयं उसकी मूर्खता है।

Learning is a fountain of life to one who possesses it. The doctrine of the foolish is senseless.

23 २३ बुद्धिमान का मन उसके मुँह पर भी बुद्धिमानी प्रगट करता है, और उसके वचन में विद्या रहती है।

The heart of the wise shall instruct his mouth and add grace to his lips.

24 २४ मनभावने वचन मधु भरे छत्ते के समान प्राणों को मीठे लगते, और हड्डियों को हरी-भरी करते हैं।

Careful words are a honeycomb: sweet to the soul and healthful to the bones.

25 २५ ऐसा भी मार्ग है, जो मनुष्य को सीधा जान पड़ता है, परन्तु उसके अन्त में मृत्यु ही मिलती है।

There is a way which seems right to a man, and its end result leads to death.

26 २६ परिश्रमी की लालसा उसके लिये परिश्रम करती है, उसकी भूख तो उसको उभारती रहती है।

The soul of the laborer labors for himself, because his mouth has driven him to it.

27 २७ अधर्मी मनुष्य बुराई की युक्ति निकालता है, और उसके वचनों से आग लग जाती है।

The impious man digs up evil, and in his lips is a burning fire.

28 २८ टेढ़ा मनुष्य बहुत झगड़े को उठाता है, और कानाफूसी करनेवाला परम मित्रों में भी फूट करा देता है।

A perverse man stirs up lawsuits. And one who is verbose divides leaders.

29 २९ उपद्रवी मनुष्य अपने पड़ोसी को फुसलाकर कुमार्ग पर चलाता है।

A man of iniquity entices his friend, and he leads him along a way that is not good.

30 ३० आँख मूँदनेवाला छल की कल्पनाएँ करता है, और होंठ दबानेवाला बुराई करता है।

Whoever, with astonished eyes, thinks up depravities, biting his lips, accomplishes evil.

31 ३१ पक्के बाल शोभायमान मुकुट ठहरते हैं; वे धर्म के मार्ग पर चलने से प्राप्त होते हैं।

Old age is a crown of dignity, when it is found in the ways of justice.

32 ३२ विलम्ब से क्रोध करना वीरता से, और अपने मन को वश में रखना, नगर को जीत लेने से उत्तम है।

A patient man is better than a strong one. And whoever rules his soul is better than one who assaults cities.

33 ३३ चिट्ठी डाली जाती तो है, परन्तु उसका निकलना यहोवा ही की ओर से होता है।

Lots are cast into the lap, but they are tempered by the Lord.
