नीतिवचन 6

1 मेरे पुत्र, यदि तुम अपने पड़ोसी के लिए ज़मानत दे बैठे हो, किसी अपरिचित के लिए वचनबद्ध हुए हो,

My son, if thou have become surety for thy neighbour, —have struck for a stranger thy hands,

2 यदि तुम वचन देकर फंस गए हो, तुम्हारे ही शब्दों ने तुम्हें विकट परिस्थिति में ला रखा है,

Thou hast been snared by the sayings of thy mouth, —thou hast been caught by the sayings of thy mouth.

3 तब मेरे पुत्र, ऐसा करना कि तुम स्वयं को बचा सको, क्योंकि इस समय तो तुम अपने पड़ोसी के हाथ में आ चुके हो: तब अब अपने पड़ोसी के पास चले जाओ, और उसको नम्रता से मना लो!

Do this then, my son, and deliver thyself, When thou hast come into the hand of thy neighbour, Go, haste thee, and urge thy neighbour;

4 यह समय निश्चिंत बैठने का नहीं है, नींद में समय नष्ट न करना.

Do not give sleep to thine eyes, or slumber to thine eyelashes;

5 इस समय तुम्हें अपनी रक्षा उसी हिरणी के समान करना है, जो शिकारी से बचने के लिए अपने प्राण लेकर भाग रही है, जैसे पक्षी जाल डालनेवाले से बचकर उड़ जाता है.

Deliver thyself, as a gazelle out of the hand, and as a bird, out of the hand of the fowler.

6 ओ आलसी, जाकर चींटी का ध्यान कर; उनके कार्य पर विचार कर और ज्ञानी बन जा!

Go to the ant, thou sluggard, observe her ways, and be wise;

7 बिना किसी प्रमुख, अधिकारी अथवा प्रशासक के,

Which, having no harvest, scribe, or ruler,

8 वह ग्रीष्मकाल में ही अपना आहार जमा कर लेती है क्योंकि वह कटनी के अवसर पर अपना भोजन एकत्र करती रहती है.

Prepareth, in the summer, her food, hath collected, in the harvest, her sustenance.

9 ओ आलसी, तू कब तक ऐसे लेटा रहेगा? कब टूटेगी तेरी नींद?

How long, O sluggard, wilt thou lie? how long ere thou rise from thy sleep?

10 थोड़ी और नींद, थोड़ा और विश्राम, कुछ देर और हाथ पर हाथ रखे हुए विश्राम,

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest: —

11 तब देखना निर्धनता कैसे तुझ पर डाकू के समान टूट पड़ती है और गरीबी, सशस्त्र पुरुष के समान.

So shall come in, as a highwayman, thy poverty, and, thy want, as one armed with a shield.

12 बुरा व्यक्ति निकम्मा ही सिद्ध होता है, उसकी बातों में हेरा-फेरी होती है,

An abandoned man, a man of iniquity, [is he] who—goeth on in perversity of mouth;

13 वह पलकें झपका कर, अपने पैरों के द्वारा तथा उंगली से इशारे करता है,

Winketh with his eyes, speaketh with his foot, pointeth with his fingers;

14 वह अपने कपटी हृदय से बुरी युक्तियां सोचता तथा निरंतर ही कलह को उत्पन्‍न करता रहता है.

[Hath] perverse things in his heart, deviseth mischief on every occasion, strifes, he sendeth forth.

15 परिणामस्वरूप विपत्ति उस पर एकाएक आ पड़ेगी; क्षण मात्र में उस पर असाध्य रोग का प्रहार हो जाएगा.

For this cause, suddenly cometh his doom, in a moment, shall he be torn in pieces and there be no mending.

16 छः वस्तुएं याहवेह को अप्रिय हैं, सात से उन्हें घृणा है:

These six things, doth Yahweh hate, yea, seven, are the abomination of his soul: —

17 घमंड से भरी आंखें, झूठ बोलने वाली जीभ, वे हाथ, जो निर्दोष की हत्या करते हैं,

Eyes that are lofty, a tongue that is false, and hands shedding innocent blood;

18 वह मस्तिष्क, जो बुरी योजनाएं सोचता रहता है, बुराई के लिए तत्पर पांव,

A heart contriving iniquitous devices, feet hasting to run into mischief;

19 झूठ पर झूठ उगलता हुआ साक्षी तथा वह व्यक्ति, जो भाइयों के मध्य कलह निर्माण करता है.

One that uttereth lies—a false witness, and one sending forth strifes between brethren.

20 मेरे पुत्र, अपने पिता के आदेश पालन करते रहना, अपनी माता की शिक्षा का परित्याग न करना.

Observe thou, my son, the commandment of thy father, and do not decline from the instruction of thy mother:

21 ये सदैव तुम्हारे हृदय में स्थापित रहें; ये सदैव तुम्हारे गले में लटके रहें.

Bind them upon thy heart continually, fasten them upon thy neck;

22 जब तुम आगे बढ़ोगे, ये तुम्हारा मार्गदर्शन करेंगे; जब तुम विश्राम करोगे, ये तुम्हारे रक्षक होंगे; और जब तुम जागोगे, तो ये तुमसे बातें करेंगे.

When thou walkest abroad, it shall guide thee, when thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee, when thou wakest, it shall speak to thee:

23 आदेश दीपक एवं शिक्षा प्रकाश है, तथा ताड़ना सहित अनुशासन जीवन का मार्ग हैं,

For, a lamp, is the commandment, and, the instruction, a light, and, the way of life, are the reproofs of correction:

24 कि बुरी स्त्री से तुम्हारी रक्षा की जा सके व्यभिचारिणी की मीठी-मीठी बातों से.

To keep thee from the wicked woman, from the flattery of the tongue of her that is a stranger.

25 मन ही मन उसके सौंदर्य की कामना न करना, उसके जादू से तुम्हें वह अधीन न करने पाए.

Do not covet her beauty, in thy heart, neither let her take thee, by her eyelashes;

26 वेश्या मात्र एक भोजन के द्वारा मोल ली जा सकती है, किंतु दूसरे पुरुष की औरत तुम्हारे खुद के जीवन को लूट लेती है.

Because, for the sake of an impure woman, [a man may be brought] even to a cake of bread, —and, a man’s wife, for a precious soul, may hunt!

27 क्या यह संभव है कि कोई व्यक्ति अपनी छाती पर आग रखे और उसके वस्त्र न जलें?

Can a man snatch up fire in his bosom, and, his clothes, not be burned?

28 अथवा क्या कोई जलते कोयलों पर चले और उसके पैर न झुलसें?

Or can a man walk upon hot coals, and, his feet, not be burned?

29 यही नियति है उस व्यक्ति की, जो पड़ोसी की पत्नी के साथ यौनाचार करता है; उसके साथ इस रूप से संबंधित हर एक व्यक्ति का दंड निश्चित है.

So, he that goeth in unto his neighbour’s wife, no man shall be guiltless who toucheth her!

30 लोगों की दृष्टि में वह व्यक्ति घृणास्पद नहीं होता जिसने अतिशय भूख मिटाने के लिए भोजन चुराया है,

Men despise not a thief, when he stealeth, to satisfy his appetite, because he is famished;

31 हां, यदि वह चोरी करते हुए पकड़ा जाता है, तो उसे उसका सात गुणा लौटाना पड़ता है, इस स्थिति में उसे अपना सब कुछ देना पड़ सकता है.

Yet, if found, he must pay back sevenfold, All the substance of his house, must he give:

32 वह, जो व्यभिचार में लिप्‍त हो जाता है, निरा मूर्ख है; वह, जो यह सब कर रहा है, स्वयं का विनाश कर रहा है.

He that committeth adultery with a woman, lacketh sense, A destroyer of his own life, is he that doeth it;

33 घाव और अपमान उसके अंश होंगे, उसकी नामधराई मिटाई न जा सकेगी.

Smiting and shame, shall he find, and, his reproach, shall not be wiped out;

34 ईर्ष्या किसी भी व्यक्ति को क्रोध में भड़काती है, प्रतिशोध की स्थिति में उसकी सुरक्षा संभव नहीं.

For, jealousy, is the rage of a man, nor will he spare, in the day of avenging;

35 उसे कोई भी क्षतिपूर्ति स्वीकार्य नहीं होती; कितने भी उपहार उसे लुभा न सकेंगे.

He will not look, at any ransom, neither will he consent, though thou increase the bribe.
