नीतिवचन 27
1 भावी कल तुम्हारे गर्व का विषय न हो, क्योंकि तुम यह नहीं जानते कि दिन में क्या घटनेवाला है.
Do not boast thyself of to-morrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
2 कोई अन्य तुम्हारी प्रशंसा करे तो करे, तुम स्वयं न करना; कोई अन्य कोई अपरिचित तुम्हारी प्रशंसा करे तो करे, तुम स्वयं न करना, स्वयं अपने मुख से नहीं.
Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, a stranger, and not thine own lips.
3 पत्थर भारी होता है और रेत का भी बोझ होता है, किंतु इन दोनों की अपेक्षा अधिक भारी होता है मूर्ख का क्रोध.
Heavy is a stone, and weighty is sand, —but, the vexation of a fool, is heavier than both.
4 कोप में क्रूरता निहित होती है तथा रोष में बाढ़ के समान उग्रता, किंतु ईर्ष्या के समक्ष कौन ठहर सकता है?
The cruelty of rage, and the overflow of anger! But who can stand before, jealousy?
5 छिपे प्रेम से कहीं अधिक प्रभावशाली है प्रत्यक्ष रूप से दी गई फटकार.
Better is a rebuke that is open, than love carefully concealed.
6 मित्र द्वारा किए गए घाव भी विश्वासयोग्य है, किंतु विरोधी चुम्बनों की वर्षा करता है!
Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but lavished are the kisses of an enemy.
7 जब भूख अच्छी रीति से तृप्त की जा चुकी है, तब मधु भी अप्रिय लगने लगता है, किंतु अत्यंत भूखे व्यक्ति के लिए कड़वा भोजन भी मीठा हो जाता है.
The surfeited soul, trampleth upon droppings from the comb, but, to the hungry soul, every bitter thing, is sweet.
8 अपने घर से दूर चला गया व्यक्ति वैसा ही होता है जैसे अपने घोंसले से भटक चुका पक्षी.
As a bird wandering from her nest, so, is a man wandering from his place.
9 तेल और सुगंध द्रव्य हृदय को मनोहर कर देते हैं, उसी प्रकार सुखद होता है खरे मित्र का परामर्श.
Oil and perfume, rejoice the heart, the sweetness of one’s friend, more than fragrant wood.
10 अपने मित्र तथा अपने माता-पिता के मित्र की उपेक्षा न करना. अपनी विपत्ति की स्थिति में अपने भाई के घर भेंट करने न जाना. दूर देश में जा बसे तुम्हारे भाई से उत्तम है तुम्हारे निकट निवास कर रहा पड़ोसी.
Thine own friend and thy father’s friend, do not thou forsake; but, the house of thy brother, do not enter, in thy day of calamity, Better a neighbour near, than a brother far off.
11 मेरे पुत्र, कैसा मनोहर होगा मेरा हृदय, जब तुम स्वयं को बुद्धिमान प्रमाणित करोगे; तब मैं अपने निंदकों को मुंह तोड़ प्रत्युत्तर दे सकूंगा.
Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart, that I may answer him that reproacheth me in a matter.
12 चतुर व्यक्ति जोखिम को देखकर छिप जाता है, किंतु अज्ञानी आगे ही बढ़ता जाता है, और यातना सहता है.
A prudent man, seeth calamity—he hideth himself, the simple, pass on—they suffer.
13 जो किसी अनजान के ऋण की ज़मानत देता है, वह अपने वस्त्र तक गंवा बैठता है; जब कोई अनजान व्यक्तियों की ज़मानत लेने लगे, तब प्रतिभूति सुरक्षा में उसका वस्त्र भी रख ले.
Take a man’s garment when he hath become pledge for a stranger, then, for a female unknown, accept him as surety.
14 यदि किसी व्यक्ति को प्रातःकाल में अपने पड़ोसी को उच्च स्वर में आशीर्वाद देता हुआ सुनो, तो उसे शाप समझना.
He that blesseth his friend, with a loud voice, in the morning early, a reproach, shall it be reckoned to him.
15 विवादी पत्नी तथा वर्षा ऋतु में लगातार वृष्टि, दोनों ही समान हैं,
A continuous dripping on a day of downpour, and a contentious wife, are alike:
16 उसे नियंत्रित करने का प्रयास पवन वेग को नियंत्रित करने का प्रयास जैसा, अथवा अपने दायें हाथ से तेल को पकड़ने का प्रयास जैसा.
He that hideth her, hideth the wind, and, perfume, his right hand may proclaim.
17 जिस प्रकार लोहे से ही लोहे पर धार बनाया जाता है, वैसे ही एक व्यक्ति दूसरे के सुधार के लिए होते है.
Let, iron, by iron, become sharp, and let, a man, sharpen the face of his friend.
18 अंजीर का फल वही खाता है, जो उस वृक्ष की देखभाल करता है, वह, जो अपने स्वामी का ध्यान रखता है, सम्मानित किया जाएगा.
He that guardeth the fig-tree, shall eat the fruit thereof, and, he that watcheth over his master, shall be honoured.
19 जिस प्रकार जल में मुखमंडल की छाया देख सकते हैं, वैसे ही व्यक्ति का जीवन भी हृदय को प्रतिबिंबित करता है.
As in water, face [answereth] to face, so, the heart of man to man.
20 मृत्यु और विनाश अब तक संतुष्ट नहीं हुए हैं, मनुष्य की आंखों की अभिलाषा भी कभी संतुष्ट नहीं होती. (Sheol h7585)
Hades and destruction, are not satisfied, and, the eyes of a man, are not satisfied. (Sheol h7585)
21 चांदी की परख कुठाली से तथा स्वर्ण की भट्टी से होती है, वैसे ही मनुष्य की परख उसकी प्रशंसा से की जाती है.
Fining pot for silver, and crucible for gold, and, a man, [is to be tried] by what he praiseth.
22 यदि तुम मूर्ख को ओखली में डालकर मूसल से अनाज के समान भी कूटो, तुम उससे उसकी मूर्खता को अलग न कर सकोगे.
Though thou pound a fool in a mortar, amidst grain, with a pestle, his folly, will not depart from him.
23 अनिवार्य है कि तुम्हें अपने पशुओं की स्थिति का यथोचित ज्ञान हो, अपने पशुओं का ध्यान रखो;
Note well, the appearance of thy flock, apply thy mind to thy herds;
24 क्योंकि, न तो धन-संपत्ति चिरकालीन होती है, और न यह कहा जा सकता है कि राजपाट आगामी सभी पीढ़ियों के लिए सुनिश्चित हो गया.
For, not age-abiding, are riches, nor is the diadem, from generation to generation: —
25 जब सूखी घास एकत्र की जा चुकी हो और नई घास अंकुरित हो रही हो, जब पर्वतों से जड़ी-बूटी एकत्र की जाती है,
The grass, is taken away, and the young shoot, showeth itself, and the herbage of the mountains, is gathered;
26 तब मेमनों से तुम्हारे वस्त्रों की आवश्यकता की पूर्ति होगी, और तुम बकरियों के मूल्य से खेत मोल ले सकोगे,
There are, lambs, for thy clothing, and, for the price of thy field, there are he-goats;
27 बकरियों के दूध इतना भरपूर होगा कि वह तुम्हारे संपूर्ण परिवार के लिए पर्याप्त भोजन रहेगा; तुम्हारी सेविकाओं की ज़रूरत भी पूर्ण होती रहेगी.
With, enough goats-milk, for thy food—for the food of thy household, and, a maintenance, for thy maidens.
