नीतिवचन 26

1 मूर्ख को सम्मानित करना वैसा ही असंगत है, जैसा ग्रीष्मऋतु में हिमपात तथा कटनी के समय वृष्टि.

As snow is in summer, and as rain in harvest: so is honor not seemly to a fool.

2 निर्दोष को दिया गया शाप वैसे ही प्रभावी नहीं हो पाता, जैसे गौरेया का फुदकना और अबाबील की उड़ान.

As the bird [cometh] to flit away, as the swallow, to fly off: so will an undeserved curse not come [to fulfillment].

3 जैसे घोड़े के लिए चाबुक और गधे के लिए लगाम, वैसे ही मूर्ख की पीठ के लिए छड़ी निर्धारित है.

A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

4 मूर्ख को उसकी मूर्खता के अनुरूप उत्तर न दो, कहीं तुम स्वयं मूर्ख सिद्ध न हो जाओ.

Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest thou also become equal unto him.

5 मूर्खों को उनकी मूर्खता के उपयुक्त उत्तर दो, अन्यथा वे अपनी दृष्टि में विद्वान हो जाएंगे.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

6 किसी मूर्ख के द्वारा संदेश भेजना वैसा ही होता है, जैसा अपने ही पैर पर कुल्हाड़ी मार लेना अथवा विषपान कर लेना.

He choppeth off the feet, and drinketh vexation, that sendeth important messages by the hand of a fool.

7 मूर्ख के मुख द्वारा निकला नीति सूत्र वैसा ही होता है, जैसा अपंग के लटकते निर्जीव पैर.

Too feebly hang down the thighs on a lame man: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

8 किसी मूर्ख को सम्मानित करना वैसा ही होगा, जैसे पत्थर को गोफन में बांध देना.

As is the one that bindeth a stone fast in a sling, so is he that giveth honor to a fool.

9 मूर्ख व्यक्ति द्वारा कहा गया नीतिवचन वैसा ही लगता है, जैसे मद्यपि के हाथों में चुभा हुआ कांटा.

[As] a thorn that is come into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

10 जो अनजान मूर्ख यात्री अथवा मदोन्मत्त व्यक्ति को काम पर लगाता है, वह उस धनुर्धारी के समान है, जो बिना किसी लक्ष्य के, लोगों को घायल करता है.

A master injureth all things when he hireth a fool or hireth mere rovers.

11 अपनी मूर्खता को दोहराता हुआ व्यक्ति उस कुत्ते के समान है, जो बार-बार अपने उल्टी की ओर लौटता है.

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so doth a fool repeat to act in his folly.

12 क्या तुमने किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति को देखा है, जो स्वयं को बुद्धिमान समझता है? उसकी अपेक्षा एक मूर्ख से कहीं अधिक अपेक्षा संभव है.

When thou seest a man wise in his own eyes, then is there more hope for a fool than for him.

13 आलसी कहता है, “मार्ग में सिंह है, सिंह गलियों में छुपा हुआ है!”

The slothful saith, There is a leopard in the way: a lion is between the streets.

14 आलसी अपने बिछौने पर वैसे ही करवटें बदलते रहता है, जैसे चूल पर द्वार.

As a door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

15 आलसी अपना हाथ भोजन की थाली में डाल तो देता है; किंतु आलस्यवश वह अपना हाथ मुख तक नहीं ले जाता.

Hath the slothful hidden his hand in the dish, it wearieth him to bring it back again to his mouth.

16 अपने विचार में आलसी उन सात व्यक्तियों से अधिक बुद्धिमान होता है, जिनमें सुसंगत उत्तर देने की क्षमता होती है.

The slothful is wiser in his own eyes, than seven men that can give wise answers.

17 मार्ग में चलते हुए अपरिचितों के मध्य चल रहे विवाद में हस्तक्षेप करते हुए व्यक्ति की स्थिति वैसी ही होती है, मानो उसने वन्य कुत्ते को उसके कानों से पकड़ लिया हो.

As is one that taketh hold of a dog by the ears, so is he that passing by becometh excited about a dispute which concerneth him not.

18 उस उन्मादी सा जो मशाल उछालता है या मनुष्य जो घातक तीर फेंकता है

As one fatigueth himself shooting off firebrands, arrows, and death:

19 वैसे ही वह भी होता है जो अपने पड़ोसी की छलता है और कहता है, “मैं तो बस ऐसे ही मजाक कर रहा था!”

So is the man that hath cheated his neighbor, and saith, Behold, I am only jesting.

20 लकड़ी समाप्‍त होते ही आग बुझ जाती है; वैसे ही जहां कानाफूसी नहीं की जाती, वहां कलह भी नहीं होता.

Where there is no wood, the fire goeth out: so where there is no whisperer, strife is silenced.

21 जैसे प्रज्वलित अंगारों के लिए कोयला और अग्नि के लिए लकड़ी, वैसे ही कलह उत्पन्‍न करने के लिए होता है विवादी प्रवृत्ति का व्यक्ति.

As charcoals are added to burning coals, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man fitted to enkindle a dispute.

22 फुसफुसाहट में उच्चारे गए शब्द स्वादिष्ट भोजन-समान होते हैं; ये शब्द मनुष्य के पेट में समा जाते हैं.

The words of a whisperer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost chambers of the body.

23 कुटिल हृदय के व्यक्ति के चिकने-चुपड़े शब्द वैसे ही होते हैं, जैसे मिट्टी के पात्र पर चढ़ाई गई चांदी का कीट.

Like silver dross laid over an earthen vessel, so are burning lips with a bad heart.

24 घृणापूर्ण हृदय के व्यक्ति के मुख से मधुर वाक्य टपकते रहते हैं, जबकि उसके हृदय में छिपा रहता है छल और कपट.

With his lips dissembleth he that hateth, and within himself layeth he up deceit:

25 जब वह मनभावन विचार व्यक्त करने लगे, तो उसका विश्वास न करना, क्योंकि उसके हृदय में सात घिनौनी बातें छिपी हुई हैं.

Though he make his voice sound ever so graciously, believe him not; for there are seven abominations in his heart.

26 यद्यपि इस समय उसने अपने छल को छुपा रखा है, उसकी कुटिलता का प्रकाशन भरी सभा में कर दिया जाएगा.

If one's hatred be covered by deception, then shall be laid bare his wickedness before a [whole] assembly.

27 जो कोई गड्ढा खोदता है, उसी में जा गिरता है; जो कोई पत्थर को लुढ़का देता है, उसी के नीचे आ जाता है.

Whoso diggeth a pit will fall therein; and upon him that rolleth a stone, will it return.

28 झूठ बोलने वाली जीभ जिससे बातें करती है, वह उसके घृणा का पात्र होता है, तथा विनाश का कारण होते हैं चापलूस के शब्द.

A lying tongue hateth those that are crushed by it; and a flattering mouth prepareth [others'] downfall.
