नीतिवचन 23
1 जब तुम किसी अधिकारी के साथ भोजन के लिए बैठो, जो कुछ तुम्हारे समक्ष है, सावधानीपूर्वक उसका ध्यान करो.
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which [is] before thee,
2 उपयुक्त होगा कि तुम अपनी भूख पर नियंत्रण रख भोजन की मात्रा कम ही रखो.
And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou [art] a man of appetite.
3 उसके उत्कृष्ट व्यंजनों की लालसा न करना, क्योंकि वे सभी धोखे के भोजन हैं.
Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it [is] lying food.
4 धनाढ्य हो जाने की अभिलाषा में स्वयं को अतिश्रम के बोझ के नीचे दबा न डालो.
Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.
5 जैसे ही तुम्हारी दृष्टि इस पर जा ठहरती है, यह अदृश्य हो जाती है, मानो इसके पंख निकल आए हों, और यह गरुड़ के समान आकाश में उड़ जाता है.
For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.
6 भोजन के लिए किसी कंजूस के घर न जाना, और न उसके उत्कृष्ट व्यंजनों की लालसा करना;
Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,
7 क्योंकि वह उस व्यक्ति के समान है, जो कहता तो है, “और खाइए न!” किंतु मन ही मन वह भोजन के मूल्य का हिसाब लगाता रहता है. वस्तुतः उसकी वह इच्छा नहीं होती, जो वह कहता है.
For as he hath thought in his soul, so [is] he, 'Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart [is] not with thee.
8 तुमने जो कुछ अल्प खाया है, वह तुम उगल दोगे, और तुम्हारे अभिनंदन, प्रशंसा और सम्मान के मधुर उद्गार भी व्यर्थ सिद्ध होंगे.
Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that [are] sweet.
9 जब मूर्ख आपकी बातें सुन रहा हो तब कुछ न कहना. क्योंकि तुम्हारी ज्ञान की बातें उसके लिए तुच्छ होंगी.
In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.
10 पूर्वकाल से चले आ रहे सीमा-चिन्ह को न हटाना, और न किसी अनाथ के खेत को हड़प लेना.
Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,
11 क्योंकि सामर्थ्यवान है उनका छुड़ाने वाला; जो तुम्हारे विरुद्ध उनका पक्ष लड़ेगा.
For their Redeemer [is] strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.
12 शिक्षा पर अपने मस्तिष्क का इस्तेमाल करो, ज्ञान के तथ्यों पर ध्यान लगाओ.
Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 संतान पर अनुशासन के प्रयोग से न हिचकना; उस पर छड़ी के प्रहार से उसकी मृत्यु नहीं हो जाएगी.
Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.
Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest. (Sheol h7585)
15 मेरे पुत्र, यदि तुम्हारे हृदय में ज्ञान का निवास है, तो मेरा हृदय अत्यंत प्रफुल्लित होगा;
My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,
16 मेरा अंतरात्मा हर्षित हो जाएगा, जब मैं तुम्हारे मुख से सही उद्गार सुनता हूं.
And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.
17 दुष्टों को देख तुम्हारे हृदय में ईर्ष्या न जागे, तुम सर्वदा याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा में आगे बढ़ते जाओ.
Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.
18 भविष्य सुनिश्चित है, तुम्हारी आशा अपूर्ण न रहेगी.
For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.
19 मेरे बालक, मेरी सुनकर विद्वत्ता प्राप्त करो, अपने हृदय को सुमार्ग के प्रति समर्पित कर दो:
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,
20 उनकी संगति में न रहना, जो मद्यपि हैं और न उनकी संगति में, जो पेटू हैं.
Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 क्योंकि मतवालों और पेटुओं की नियति गरीबी है, और अति नींद उन्हें चिथड़े पहनने की स्थिति में ले आती है.
For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
22 अपने पिता की शिक्षाओं को ध्यान में रखना, वह तुम्हारे जनक है, और अपनी माता के वयोवृद्ध होने पर उन्हें तुच्छ न समझना.
Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.
23 सत्य को मोल लो, किंतु फिर इसका विक्रय न करना; ज्ञान, अनुशासन तथा समझ संग्रहीत करते जाओ.
Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 सबसे अधिक उल्लसित व्यक्ति होता है धर्मी व्यक्ति का पिता; जिसने बुद्धिमान पुत्र को जन्म दिया है, वह पुत्र उसके आनंद का विषय होता है.
The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.
25 वही करो कि तुम्हारे माता-पिता आनंदित रहें; एवं तुम्हारी जननी उल्लसित.
Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.
26 मेरे पुत्र, अपना हृदय मुझे दे दो; तुम्हारे नेत्र मेरी जीवनशैली का ध्यान करते रहें,
Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.
27 वेश्या एक गहरा गड्ढा होती है, पराई स्त्री एक संकरा कुंआ है.
For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a strait pit.
28 वह डाकू के समान ताक लगाए बैठी रहती है इसमें वह मनुष्यों में विश्वासघातियों की संख्या में वृद्धि में योग देती जाती है.
She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.
29 कौन है शोक संतप्त? कौन है विपदा में? कौन विवादग्रस्त है? और कौन असंतोष में पड़ा है? किस पर अकारण ही घाव हुए है? किसके नेत्र लाल हो गए हैं?
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?
30 वे ही न, जिन्होंने देर तक बैठे दाखमधु पान किया है, वे ही न, जो विविध मिश्रित दाखमधु का पान करते रहे हैं?
Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 उस लाल आकर्षक दाखमधु पर दृष्टि ही मत डालो और न तब, जब यह प्याले में उंडेली जाती है, अन्यथा यह गले से नीचे उतरने में विलंब नहीं करेगी.
See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.
32 अंत में सर्पदंश के समान होता है दाखमधु का प्रभाव तथा विषैले सर्प के समान होता है उसका प्रहार.
Its latter end — as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.
33 तुम्हें असाधारण दृश्य दिखाई देने लगेंगे, तुम्हारा मस्तिष्क कुटिल विषय प्रस्तुत करने लगेगा.
Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.
34 तुम्हें ऐसा अनुभव होगा, मानो तुम समुद्र की लहरों पर लेटे हुए हो, ऐसा, मानो तुम जलयान के उच्चतम स्तर पर लेटे हो.
And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.
35 तब तुम यह दावा भी करने लगोगे, “उन्होंने मुझे पीटा था, फिर भी मुझ पर इसका प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा. उन्होंने मुझे मारा पर मुझे तो लगा ही नहीं! कब टूटेगी मेरी यह नींद? लाओ, मैं एक प्याला और पी लूं.”
'They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake — I seek it yet again!'
