नीतिवचन 22
1 विशाल निधि से कहीं अधिक योग्य है अच्छा नाम; तथा स्वर्ण और चांदी से श्रेष्ठ है आदर सम्मान!
More choice, is a name, than great riches, beyond silver and gold, is pleasant grace.
2 सम्पन्न और निर्धन के विषय में एक समता है: दोनों ही के सृजनहार याहवेह ही हैं.
The rich and the poor, meet together, the maker of them all, is Yahweh.
3 चतुर व्यक्ति जोखिम को देखकर छिप जाता है, किंतु अज्ञानी आगे ही बढ़ता जाता है और यातना सहता है.
A prudent man, seeth calamity, and hideth himself, but, the simple, pass on, and suffer.
4 विनम्रता तथा याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा का प्रतिफल होता है; धन संपदा, सम्मान और जीवन.
The reward of humility, is the reverence of Yahweh, riches, and honour, and life.
5 कुटिल व्यक्ति के मार्ग पर बिछे रहते हैं कांटे और फंदे, किंतु जो कोई अपने जीवन के प्रति सावधान रहता है, स्वयं को इन सबसे दूर ही दूर रखता है.
Thorns and snares, are in the way of the perverse, —he that guardeth his soul, shall be far from them.
6 अपनी संतान को उसी जीवनशैली के लिए तैयार कर लो, जो सुसंगत है, वृद्ध होने पर भी वह इससे भटकेगा नहीं.
Train up a youth, in the direction of his duty, even when he becometh old, he will not depart from it.
7 निर्धन पर धनाढ्य अधिकार कर लेता है, तथा ऋणी महाजन का दास होकर रह जाता है.
The rich, over the poor, beareth rule, —and, slave, is the borrower to the lender.
8 जो कोई अन्याय का बीजारोपण करता है, विपत्ति की उपज एकत्र करता है, तब उसके क्रोध की लाठी भी विफल सिद्ध होती है.
He that soweth perversity, shall reap trouble, and, the rod of his wrath, shall be ready.
9 उदार व्यक्ति धन्य रहेगा, क्योंकि वह निर्धन को अपने भोजन में सहभागी कर लेता है.
A benevolent eye, the same, shall be blessed, —because he hath given of his bread to the poor.
10 यदि छिछोरे और ठट्ठा करनेवाले को सभा से बाहर कर दिया जाए; तो विवाद, कलह और परनिंदा सभी समाप्त हो जाएंगे.
Drive away the scoffer, that strife may depart, and quarrel, and contempt may cease.
11 जिन्हें निर्मल हृदय की महत्ता ज्ञात है, जिनकी बातें मधुर हैं, वे राजा के प्रिय पात्र हो जाएंगे.
Yahweh loveth the pure in heart, gracious are his lips, his friend is the king!
12 याहवेह की दृष्टि ज्ञान की रक्षा करती है, किंतु वह कृतघ्न और विश्वासघाती के वक्तव्य को मिटा देते हैं.
The eyes of Yahweh, watch over knowledge, therefore hath he overturned the words of the treacherous.
13 आलसी कहता है, “बाहर सिंह है! बाहर सड़क पर जाने पर मेरी मृत्यु निश्चित है!”
Saith the sluggard, A lion outside! Amidst the broadways, shall I be slain.
14 चरित्रहीन स्त्री का मुख गहरे गड्ढे-समान है; याहवेह द्वारा शापित व्यक्ति ही इसमें जा गिरता है.
A deep chasm, is the mouth of strange women, he with whom Yahweh is indignant, falleth there.
15 बालक की प्रकृति में ही मूर्खता बंधी रहती है, अनुशासन की छड़ी से ही यह उससे दूर की जाती है.
Foolishness, is bound up in the heart of a youth, the rod of correction, shall drive it far from him.
16 जो अपनी संपत्ति में वृद्धि पाने के उद्देश्य से निर्धन पर अंधेर करने, तथा धनाढ्य को उपहार देने का परिणाम होता है; निर्धनता!
He that oppresseth the poor, to make increase for himself, giving to the rich, shall surely come to want.
17 अत्यंत ध्यानपूर्वक बुद्धिमानों का प्रवचन सुनो; और मेरे ज्ञान की बातों को मन में बसा लो,
Incline thine ear and hear the words of wise men, then, thy heart, wilt thou apply to my teaching;
18 क्योंकि यह करना तुम्हारे लिए सुखदायी होगा, यदि ये तुम्हारे मन में बसे हुए होंगे, यदि ये सभी तुम्हें मुखाग्र होंगे.
For sweet shall they be, when thou shalt keep them in thine inmost mind, they shall fit well together, upon thy lips.
19 मैं यह सब तुम पर, विशेष रूप से तुम पर इसलिये प्रकट कर रहा हूं, कि तुम्हारा भरोसा याहवेह पर अटल रहे;
That in Yahweh may be thy trust, I have made them known to thee to-day, even to thee.
20 विचार करो, क्या मैंने परामर्श तथा ज्ञान के ये तीस नीति सूत्र इस उद्देश्य से नहीं लिखे कि
Have I not written for thee noble things, with counsels and knowledge:
21 तुम्हें यह बोध रहे कि सुसंगत और सत्य क्या है, और तुम अपने प्रेषकों को उपयुक्त उत्तर दे सको?
To cause thee to know the meaning of faithful sayings, that thou mayest give back faithful sayings to them who ask thee.
22 किसी निर्धन को इसलिये लूटने न लगो, कि वह निर्धन है, वैसे ही किसी पीड़ित को न्यायालय ले जाकर गुनहगार न बनाना,
Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, neither crush thou the oppressed in the gate;
23 क्योंकि याहवेह पीड़ित के पक्ष में खड़े होंगे, और उनके प्राण का बदला लेंगे.
For, Yahweh, will plead their cause, and will despoil their despoilers of life.
24 किसी क्रोधी व्यक्ति को मित्र न बनाना, और न किसी शीघ्र क्रोधी व्यक्ति के किसी कार्य में सहयोगी बनना.
Do not have friendship with one given to anger, and, with a wrathful man, shall thou not enter in:
25 कहीं ऐसा न हो कि तुम भी उसी के समान बन जाओ और स्वयं किसी फंदे में जा फंसो.
Lest thou learn his ways, and take a snare to thy soul.
26 तुम उनके जैसे न बनना, जो किसी की ज़मानत लेते हैं, जो किसी ऋणी के ऋण का दायित्व लेते हैं.
Be not of them who strike hands, of them who are sureties for debts:
27 यदि तुम्हारे पास भुगतान करने के लिए कुछ नहीं है, तो साहूकार तो तुमसे तुम्हारा बिछौना छीन लेगा.
If thou hast nothing to pay, why should one take away thy bed from under thee?
28 अपने पूर्वजों द्वारा स्थापित सीमा-चिन्हों को तुम कभी न हटाना.
Do not move back the ancient boundary, which thy father’s made.
29 क्या आप किसी को अपने काम में कुशल दिखते हैं? उस व्यक्ति का स्थान राजा की उपस्थिति में है; वे नीचे श्रेणी के अधिकारियों के सामने सेवा नहीं करेंगे.
Seest thou a man prompt in his business? before kings, shall he stand, he shall not stand before men who are obscure.
