नीतिवचन 19
1 वह निर्धन व्यक्ति, जिसका चालचलन खराई है, उस व्यक्ति से उत्तम है, जो कुटिल है और मूर्ख भी.
Better is the poore that walketh in his vprightnes, then he that abuseth his lips, and is a foole.
2 ज्ञान-रहित इच्छा निरर्थक होती है तथा वह, जो किसी भी कार्य के लिए उतावली करता है, लक्ष्य प्राप्त नहीं कर पाता!
For without knowledge the minde is not good, and he that hasteth with his feete, sinneth.
3 जब किसी व्यक्ति की मूर्खता के परिणामस्वरूप उसकी योजनाएं विफल हो जाती हैं, तब उसके हृदय में याहवेह के प्रति क्रोध भड़क उठता है.
The foolishnesse of a man peruerteth his way, and his heart freateth against the Lord.
4 धन-संपत्ति अनेक नए मित्रों को आकर्षित करती है, किंतु निर्धन व्यक्ति के मित्र उसे छोड़कर चले जाते हैं.
Riches gather many friends: but the poore is separated from his neighbour.
5 झूठे साक्षी का दंड सुनिश्चित है, तथा दंडित वह भी होगा, जो झूठा है.
A false witnes shall not be vnpunished: and he that speaketh lyes, shall not escape.
6 उदार व्यक्ति का समर्थन अनेक व्यक्ति चाहते हैं, और उस व्यक्ति के मित्र सभी हो जाते हैं, जो उपहार देने में उदार है.
Many reuerence the face of the prince, and euery man is friend to him that giueth giftes.
7 निर्धन व्यक्ति तो अपने संबंधियों के लिए भी घृणा का पात्र हो जाता है. उसके मित्र उससे कितने दूर हो जाते हैं! वह उन्हें मनाता रह जाता है, किंतु इसका उन पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता.
All the brethren of the poore doe hate him: howe much more will his friends depart farre from him? though hee be instant with wordes, yet they will not.
8 बुद्धि प्राप्त करना स्वयं से प्रेम करना है; तथा ज्ञान को सुरक्षित रखना समृद्धि है.
He that possesseth vnderstanding, loueth his owne soule, and keepeth wisdome to finde goodnesse.
9 झूठे साक्षी का दंड सुनिश्चित है तथा जो झूठा है, वह नष्ट हो जाएगा.
A false witnes shall not be vnpunished: and he that speaketh lyes, shall perish.
10 सुख से रहना मूर्ख को शोभा नहीं देता, ठीक जिस प्रकार दास का शासकों पर शासन करना.
Pleasure is not comely for a foole, much lesse for a seruant to haue rule ouer princes.
11 सद्बुद्धि मनुष्य को क्रोध पर नियंत्रण रखने योग्य बनाती है; और जब वह अपराध को भुला देता है, उसकी प्रतिष्ठा होती है.
The discretion of man deferreth his anger: and his glory is to passe by an offence.
12 राजा का क्रोध सिंह के गरजने के समान होता है, किंतु उसकी कृपा घास पर पड़ी ओस समान.
The Kings wrath is like the roaring of a lyon: but his fauour is like the dewe vpon ye grasse.
13 मूर्ख संतान पिता के विनाश का कारक होती है, और झगड़ालू पत्नी नित टपक रहे जल समान.
A foolish sonne is the calamitie of his father, and the contentions of a wife are like a continuall dropping.
14 घर और संपत्ति पूर्वजों का धन होता है, किंतु बुद्धिमती पत्नी याहवेह की ओर से प्राप्त होती है.
House and riches are the inheritance of the fathers: but a prudent wife commeth of the Lord.
15 आलस्य का परिणाम होता है गहन नींद, ढीला व्यक्ति भूखा रह जाता है.
Slouthfulnes causeth to fall asleepe, and a deceitfull person shall be affamished.
16 वह, जो आदेशों को मानता है, अपने ही जीवन की रक्षा करता है, किंतु जो अपने चालचलन के विषय में असावधान रहता है, मृत्यु अपना लेता है.
He that keepeth the commandement, keepeth his owne soule: but hee that despiseth his wayes, shall dye.
17 वह, जो निर्धनों के प्रति उदार मन का है, मानो याहवेह को ऋण देता है; याहवेह उसे उत्तम प्रतिफल प्रदान करेंगे.
He that hath mercy vpon the poore, lendeth vnto the Lord: and the Lord will recompense him that which he hath giuen.
18 यथासंभव अपनी संतान पर अनुशासन रखो उसी में तुम्हारी आशा निहित है; किंतु ताड़ना इस सीमा तक न की जाए, कि इसमें उसकी मृत्यु ही हो जाए.
Chasten thy sonne while there is hope, and let not thy soule spare for his murmuring.
19 अति क्रोधी व्यक्ति को इसका दंड भोगना होता है; यदि तुम उसे दंड से बचाओगे तो तुम समस्त प्रक्रिया को दोहराते रहोगे.
A man of much anger shall suffer punishment: and though thou deliuer him, yet wil his anger come againe.
20 परामर्श पर विचार करते रहो और निर्देश स्वीकार करो, कि तुम उत्तरोत्तर बुद्धिमान होते जाओ.
Heare counsell and receiue instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter ende.
21 मनुष्य के मन में अनेक-अनेक योजनाएं उत्पन्न होती रहती हैं, किंतु अंततः याहवेह का उद्देश्य ही पूरा होता है.
Many deuises are in a mans heart: but the counsell of the Lord shall stand.
22 मनुष्य में खराई की अपेक्षा की जाती है; तथा झूठ बोलनेवाले की अपेक्षा निर्धन अधिक उत्तम है.
That that is to be desired of a man, is his goodnes, and a poore man is better then a lyer.
23 याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा ही जीवन का मार्ग है; तथा जिस किसी में यह भय है, उसका ठिकाना सुखी रहता है, अनिष्ट उसको स्पर्श नहीं करता.
The feare of the Lord leadeth to life: and he that is filled therewith, shall continue, and shall not be visited with euill.
24 एक आलसी ऐसा भी होता है, जो अपना हाथ भोजन की थाली में डाल तो देता है; किंतु आलस्य में भोजन को मुख तक नहीं ले जाता.
The slouthfull hideth his hand in his bosome, and wil not put it to his mouth againe.
25 ज्ञान के ठट्ठा करनेवाले पर प्रहार करो कि सरल-साधारण व्यक्ति भी बुद्धिमान बन जाये; विवेकशील व्यक्ति को डांटा करो कि उसका ज्ञान बढ़ सके.
Smite a scorner, and the foolish wil beware: and reproue the prudent, and he wil vnderstand knowledge.
26 जो व्यक्ति अपने पिता के प्रति हिंसक हो जाता तथा अपनी माता को घर से बाहर निकाल देता है, ऐसी संतान है, जो परिवार पर लज्जा और निंदा ले आती है.
He that destroyeth his father, or chaseth away his mother, is a lewde and shamefull childe.
27 मेरे पुत्र, यदि तुम शिक्षाओं को सुनना छोड़ दो, तो तुम ज्ञान के वचनों से दूर चले जाओगे.
My sonne, heare no more the instruction, that causeth to erre from ye words of knowledge.
28 कुटिल साक्षी न्याय का उपहास करता है, और दुष्ट का मुख अपराध का समर्थन करता है.
A wicked witnes mocketh at iudgement, and the mouth of ye wicked swalloweth vp iniquitie.
29 ठट्ठा करनेवालों के लिए दंड निर्धारित है, और मूर्ख की पीठ के लिए कोड़े हैं.
But iudgements are prepared for the scorners, and stripes for the backe of the fooles.
