नीतिवचन 18

1 जिसने स्वयं को समाज से अलग कर लिया है, वह अपनी ही अभिलाषाओं की पूर्ति में संलिप्‍त रहता है, वह हर प्रकार की प्रामाणिक बुद्धिमत्ता को त्याग चुका है.

He that wole go a wei fro a frend, sekith occasiouns; in al tyme he schal be dispisable.

2 विवेकशीलता में मूर्ख की कोई रुचि नहीं होती. उसे तो मात्र अपने ही विचार व्यक्त करने की धुन रहती है.

A fool resseyueth not the wordis of prudence; `no but thou seie tho thingis, that ben turned in his herte.

3 जैसे ही दृष्टि का प्रवेश होता है, घृणा भी साथ साथ चली आती है, वैसे ही अपमान के साथ साथ निर्लज्जता भी.

A wickid man, whanne he cometh in to depthe of synnes, dispisith; but sclaundre and schenschipe sueth hym.

4 मनुष्य के मुख से बोले शब्द गहन जल समान होते हैं, और ज्ञान का सोता नित प्रवाहित उमड़ती नदी समान.

Deep watir is the wordis of the mouth of a man; and a stronde fletinge ouer is the welle of wisdom.

5 दुष्ट का पक्ष लेना उपयुक्त नहीं और न धर्मी को न्याय से वंचित रखना.

It is not good to take the persoone of a wickid man in doom, that thou bowe awei fro the treuthe of dom.

6 मूर्खों का वार्तालाप कलह का प्रवेश है, उनके मुंह की बातें उनकी पिटाई की न्योता देती हैं.

The lippis of a fool medlen hem silf with chidyngis; and his mouth excitith stryues.

7 मूर्खों के मुख ही उनके विनाश का हेतु होता हैं, उनके ओंठ उनके प्राणों के लिए फंदा सिद्ध होते हैं.

The mouth of a fool is defoulyng of hym; and hise lippis ben the fallynge of his soule.

8 फुसफुसाहट में उच्चारे गए शब्द स्वादिष्ट भोजन-समान होते हैं; ये शब्द मनुष्य के पेट में समा जाते हैं.

9 जो कोई अपने निर्धारित कार्य के प्रति आलसी है वह विध्वंसक व्यक्ति का भाई होता है.

He that is neisch, and vnstidfast in his werk, is the brother of a man distriynge hise werkis.

10 याहवेह का नाम एक सुदृढ़ मीनार समान है; धर्मी दौड़कर इसमें छिप जाता और सुरक्षित बना रहता है.

A strongeste tour is the name of the Lord; a iust man renneth to hym, and schal be enhaunsid.

11 धनी व्यक्ति के लिए उसका धन एक गढ़ के समान होता है; उनको लगता हैं कि उस पर चढ़ना मुश्किल है!

The catel of a riche man is the citee of his strengthe; and as a stronge wal cumpassinge hym.

12 इसके पूर्व कि किसी मनुष्य पर विनाश का प्रहार हो, उसका हृदय घमंडी हो जाता है, पर आदर मिलने के पहले मनुष्य नम्र होता है!

The herte of man is enhaunsid, bifor that it be brokun; and it is maad meke, bifore that it be glorified.

13 यदि कोई ठीक से सुने बिना ही उत्तर देने लगे, तो यह मूर्खता और लज्जा की स्थिति होती है.

He that answerith bifore that he herith, shewith hym silf to be a fool; and worthi of schenschipe.

14 रुग्ण अवस्था में मनुष्य का मनोबल उसे संभाले रहता है, किंतु टूटे हृदय को कौन सह सकता है?

The spirit of a man susteyneth his feblenesse; but who may susteyne a spirit liyt to be wrooth?

15 बुद्धिमान मस्तिष्क वह है, जो ज्ञान प्राप्‍त करता रहता है. बुद्धिमान का कान ज्ञान की खोज करता रहता है.

The herte of a prudent man schal holde stidfastli kunnyng; and the eere of wise men sekith techyng.

16 उपहार उसके देनेवाले के लिए मार्ग खोलता है, जिससे उसका महान व्यक्तियों के पास प्रवेश संभव हो जाता है.

The yift of a man alargith his weie; and makith space to hym bifore princes.

17 यह संभव है कि न्यायालय में, जो व्यक्ति पहले होकर अपना पक्ष प्रस्तुत करता है, सच्चा ज्ञात हो; जब तक अन्य पक्ष आकर परीक्षण न करे.

A iust man is the first accusere of hym silf; his frend cometh, and schal serche hym.

18 पासा फेंककर विवाद हल करना संभव है, इससे प्रबल विरोधियों के मध्य सर्वमान्य निर्णय लिया जा सकता है.

Lot ceessith ayenseiyngis; and demeth also among miyti men.

19 एक रुष्ट भाई को मनाना सुदृढ़-सुरक्षित नगर को ले लेने से अधिक कठिन कार्य है; और विवाद राजमहल के बंद फाटक समान होते हैं.

A brother that is helpid of a brothir, is as a stidfast citee; and domes ben as the barris of citees.

20 मनुष्य की बातों का परिणाम होता है उसके पेट का भरना; उसके होंठों के उत्पाद में उसका संतोष होता है.

A mannus wombe schal be fillid of the fruit of his mouth; and the seedis of hise lippis schulen fille hym.

21 जिह्वा की सामर्थ्य जीवन और मृत्यु तक व्याप्‍त है, और जिन्हें यह बात ज्ञात है, उन्हें इसका प्रतिफल प्राप्‍त होगा.

Deth and lijf ben in the werkis of tunge; thei that louen it, schulen ete the fruytis therof.

22 जिस किसी को पत्नी प्राप्‍त हो गई है, उसने भलाई प्राप्‍त की है, उसे याहवेह की ओर से ही यह आनंद प्राप्‍त हुआ है.

He that fyndith a good womman, fyndith a good thing; and of the Lord he schal drawe vp myrthe. He that puttith a wey a good womman, puttith awei a good thing; but he that holdith auowtresse, is a fool and vnwijs.

23 संसार में निर्धन व्यक्ति गिड़गिड़ाता रहता है, और धनी उसे कठोरतापूर्व उत्तर देता है.

A pore man schal speke with bisechingis; and a riche man schal speke sterneli.

24 मनुष्य के मित्र मैत्री का लाभ उठाते रहते हैं, किंतु सच्चा मित्र वह होता है, जो भाई से भी अधिक उत्तम होता है.
