नीतिवचन 16

1 मनुष्य के मन में योजना अवश्य होती हैं, किंतु कार्य का आदेश याहवेह के द्वारा ही किया जाता है.

To man, belong the preparations of the heart, but, from Yahweh, cometh the answer of the tongue.

2 मनुष्य की दृष्टि में उसका अपना समस्त चालचलन शुद्ध ही होता है, किंतु याहवेह ही उसकी अंतरात्मा को परखते हैं.

All the ways of a man, [may be] pure in his own eyes, but, he that testeth spirits, is Yahweh.

3 अपना समस्त उपक्रम याहवेह पर डाल दो, कि वह तुम्हारी योजनाओं को सफल कर सकें.

Roll, upon Yahweh, thy doings, that thy plans, may be established.

4 याहवेह ने हर एक वस्तु को एक विशेष उद्देश्य से सृजा— यहां तक कि दुष्ट को घोर विपत्ति के दिन के लिए.

Everything, hath Yahweh made for its own purpose, yea, even the lawless one, for the day of calamity.

5 हर एक अहंकारी हृदय याहवेह के लिए घृणास्पद है; स्मरण रहे: दंड से कोई भी नहीं बचेगा.

An abomination to Yahweh, is every one who is haughty in heart, hand to hand, he shall not be held innocent.

6 निस्वार्थ प्रेम तथा खराई द्वारा अपराधों का प्रायश्चित किया जाता है; तथा याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा के द्वारा बुराई से मुड़ना संभव होता है.

By lovingkindness and fidelity, shall iniquity be covered, and, in the revering of Yahweh, is a turning away from wrong.

7 जब किसी व्यक्ति का चालचलन याहवेह को भाता है, वह उसके शत्रुओं तक को उसके प्रति मित्र बना देते हैं.

When, acceptable to Yahweh, are the ways of a man, even his enemies, doth he cause to make peace with him.

8 सीमित संसाधनों के साथ धर्मी का जीवन अनुचित रूप से अर्जित अपार संपत्ति से उत्तम है.

Better a little with righteousness, than large revenues, without justice.

9 मानवीय मस्तिष्क अपने लिए उपयुक्त मार्ग निर्धारित कर लेता है, किंतु उसके पैरों का निर्धारण याहवेह ही करते हैं.

A man’s heart, deviseth his way, but, Yahweh, directeth his steps.

10 राजा के मुख द्वारा घोषित निर्णय दिव्य वाणी के समान होते हैं, तब उसके निर्णयों में न्याय-विसंगति अनुपयुक्त है.

An oracle, is on the lips of a king, in giving sentence, his mouth must not be unfaithful.

11 शुद्ध माप याहवेह द्वारा निर्धारित होते हैं; सभी प्रकार के माप पर उन्हीं की स्वीकृति है.

The balance and scales of justice, belong to Yahweh, and, his handiwork, are all the weights of the bag.

12 बुराई राजा पर शोभा नहीं देती, क्योंकि सिंहासन की स्थिरता धर्म पर आधारित है.

The abomination of kings, is to work lawlessness, for, by righteousness, is established a throne.

13 राजाओं को न्यायपूर्ण वाणी भाती है; जो जन सत्य बोलता है, वह उसे ही मान देता है.

The delight of kings, are lips of righteousness, —and, the words of uprightness, he loveth.

14 राजा का कोप मृत्यु के दूत के समान होता है, किंतु ज्ञानवान व्यक्ति इस कोप को ठंडा कर देता है.

The wrath of a king, [meaneth] messengers of death, but, a man who is wise, will appease it.

15 राजा के मुखमंडल का प्रकाश जीवनदान है; उसकी कृपादृष्टि उन मेघों के समान है, जो वसन्त ऋतु की वृष्टि लेकर आते हैं.

In the light of a king’s countenance, is life, and, his good-pleasure, is like the cloud of harvest-rain.

16 स्वर्ण की अपेक्षा ज्ञान को प्राप्‍त करना कितना अधिक उत्तम है, और बुद्धिमत्ता की उपलब्धि चांदी पाने से.

To acquire wisdom, how much better than gold! and, to get hold of understanding, more choice than silver!

17 धर्मी का राजमार्ग कुटिलता को देखे बिना उसे दूर छोड़ता हुआ आगे बढ़ जाता है. जो अपने चालचलन के प्रति न्यायी रहता है, अपने जीवन की रक्षा ही करता है.

The highway of the upright, is to avoid evil, He preserveth his soul, who guardeth his way.

18 सर्वनाश के पूर्व अहंकार, तथा ठोकर के पूर्व घमंड प्रकट होता है.

Before grievous injury, pride! and, before a fall, haughtiness of spirit!

19 निर्धनों के मध्य विनम्र भाव में रहना दिन के साथ लूट की सामग्री में सम्मिलित होने से उत्तम है.

Better is lowliness of spirit, with the patient, than a portion of spoil, with the proud.

20 जो कोई शिक्षा को ध्यानपूर्वक सुनता है, उत्तम प्रतिफल प्राप्‍त करता है और धन्य होता है वह, जिसने याहवेह पर भरोसा रखा है.

He that showeth discretion concerning a matter, shall find good, and, he that trusteth in Yahweh, how happy is he!

21 कुशाग्रबुद्धि के व्यक्ति अनुभवी व्यक्ति के रूप में प्रख्यात हो जाते हैं, और मधुर बातों से अभिव्यक्ति ग्रहण योग्य हो जाती है.

The wise in heart, shall be called intelligent, and, sweetness of lips, increaseth persuasiveness.

22 बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति में समझ जीवन-प्रदायी सोता समान है, किंतु मूर्ख को अपनी ही मूर्खता के द्वारा दंड प्राप्‍त हो जाता है.

A well-spring of life, is discretion to its owner, but, the correction of the foolish, is folly.

23 बुद्धिमानों के मन उनके मुंह को समझदार बनाते हैं और उनके ओंठ ज्ञान प्रसार करते हैं, और उसका वक्तव्य श्रोता स्वीकार भी कर लेते हैं.

The heart of the wise, giveth discretion to his mouth, and, upon his lips, increaseth persuasiveness.

24 सुहावने शब्द मधु के छत्ते-समान होते हैं, जिनसे मन को शांति तथा देह को स्वास्थ्य प्राप्‍त होता है.

A comb of honey, are pleasant words, sweet to the taste and healing to the bone.

25 एक ऐसा मार्ग है, जो उपयुक्त जान पड़ता है, किंतु इसका अंत है मृत्यु-द्वार.

There is a way that enticeth a man, but, at the latter end thereof, are the ways of death.

26 श्रमिक के श्रम की प्रेरणा है उसकी भूख; अपने उदर की सतत मांग पर ही वह श्रम करता जाता है.

The appetite of the toiler, hath toiled for him, for his mouth, hath urged him on.

27 अधर्मी व्यक्ति बुराई की योजना करता रहता है, और जब वह बातें करता है, तो उसके शब्द भड़कती अग्नि-समान होते हैं.

An abandoned man, diggeth up mischief, —and, upon his lips, as it were a fire is scorching.

28 कुटिल मनोवृत्ति का व्यक्ति कलह फैलाता जाता है, तथा परम मित्रों में फूट का कारण वह व्यक्ति होता है, जो कानाफूसी करता है.

A perverse man, sendeth forth strife, and, a tattler, separateth intimate friends.

29 हिंसक प्रवृत्ति का व्यक्ति अपने पड़ोसी को आकर्षित कर उसे बुराई के लिए प्रेरित कर देता है.

A ruthless man, enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him in a way, not good.

30 वह, जो अपने नेत्रों से इशारे करता है, वह निश्चयतः कुटिल युक्ति गढ़ रहा होता है; जो अपने ओंठ चबाता है, वह विसंगत युक्ति कर रहा होता है.

Closing his eyes, to devise perverse things, biting his lips, he hath plotted mischief.

31 श्वेत केश शानदार मुकुट हैं; ये धर्ममय मार्ग पर चलने से प्राप्‍त होते है.

A crown of adorning, is a hoary head, in the way of righteousness, it should be found.

32 एक योद्धा से बेहतर वह है, जो विलंब से क्रोध करता है; जिसने एक नगर को अधीन कर लिया है, उससे भी उत्तम है जिसने अपनी अंतरात्मा पर नियंत्रण कर लिया है!

Better he that is slow to anger, than a hero, and he that ruleth his spirit, than he that captureth a city.

33 किसी निर्णय पर पहुंचने के लिए मत अवश्य लिया जाता है, किंतु हर एक निष्कर्ष याहवेह द्वारा ही निर्धारित किया जाता है.

Into the lap, is cast the lot, but, from Yahweh, is its every decision.
