नीतिवचन 15

1 मृदु प्रत्युत्तर कोप शांत कर देता है, किंतु कठोर प्रतिक्रिया से क्रोध भड़कता है.

A soft answer, turneth away wrath, but a cutting word raiseth anger.

2 बुद्धिमान के मुख से ज्ञान निकलता है, किंतु मूर्ख का मुख मूर्खता ही उगलता है.

The tongue of the wise, adorneth knowledge, —but, the mouth of dullards, belcheth out folly.

3 याहवेह की दृष्टि सब स्थान पर बनी रहती है, उनके नेत्र उचित-अनुचित दोनों पर निगरानी रखते हैं.

In every place, are the eyes of Yahweh, observing the evil and the good.

4 सांत्वना देनेवाली बातें जीवनदायी वृक्ष है, किंतु कुटिलतापूर्ण वार्तालाप उत्साह को दुःखित कर देता है.

Gentleness of the tongue, is a tree of life, but, crookedness therein, a grievous wound in the spirit.

5 मूर्ख पुत्र की दृष्टि में पिता के निर्देश तिरस्कारीय होते हैं, किंतु विवेकशील होता है वह पुत्र, जो पिता की डांट पर ध्यान देता है.

A foolish [son], spurneth the correction of his father, but, he that heedeth a reproof, sheweth prudence.

6 धर्मी के घर में अनेक-अनेक बहुमूल्य वस्तुएं पाई जाती हैं, किंतु दुष्ट की आय ही उसके संकट का कारण बन जाती है.

The household of the righteous man, is a great treasure, but, in the increase of the lawless, is disturbance.

7 बुद्धिमान के होंठों से ज्ञान का प्रसरण होता है, किंतु मूर्ख के हृदय से ऐसा कुछ नहीं होता.

The lips of the wise, scatter abroad knowledge, but, the heart of dullards, is not right.

8 दुष्ट द्वारा अर्पित की गई बलि याहवेह के लिए घृणास्पद है, किंतु धर्मी द्वारा की गई प्रार्थना उन्हें स्वीकार्य है.

The sacrifice of lawless men, is an abomination to Yahweh, but, the prayer of the upright, is his delight.

9 याहवेह के समक्ष बुराई का चालचलन घृणास्पद होता है, किंतु जो धर्मी का निर्वाह करता है वह उनका प्रिय पात्र हो जाता है.

An abomination to Yahweh, is the way of the lawless, but, the pursuer of righteousness, he loveth.

10 उसके लिए घातक दंड निर्धारित है, जो सन्मार्ग का परित्याग कर देता है और वह; जो डांट से घृणा करता है, मृत्यु आमंत्रित करता है.

There is, grievous correction, for him that forsaketh the right path, He that hateth rebuke, shall die.

11 जब मृत्यु और विनाश याहवेह के समक्ष खुली पुस्तक-समान हैं, तो मनुष्य के हृदय कितने अधिक स्पष्ट न होंगे! (Sheol h7585)

Hades and destruction, are before Yahweh, how much more then, the hearts of the sons of men. (Sheol h7585)

12 हंसी मजाक करनेवाले को डांट पसंद नहीं है, इसलिए वे ज्ञानी से दूर रखते हैं.

A scoffer, loveth not, one who reproveth him, unto the wise, doth he not go.

13 प्रसन्‍न हृदय मुखमंडल को भी आकर्षक बना देता है, किंतु दुःखित हृदय आत्मा तक को निराश कर देता है.

A joyful heart, maketh a pleasing countenance, —but, in sorrow of heart, is a stricken spirit.

14 विवेकशील हृदय ज्ञान की खोज करता रहता है, किंतु मूर्खों का वार्तालाप उत्तरोत्तर मूर्खता विकसित करता है.

The heart of the intelligent, seeketh knowledge, but, the mouth of dullards, feedeth on folly.

15 गरीबी-पीड़ित के सभी दिन क्लेशपूर्ण होते हैं, किंतु उल्‍लसित हृदय के कारण प्रतिदिन उत्सव सा आनंद रहता है.

All the days of the afflicted, are sorrowful, but, a cheerful heart, is a continual banquet.

16 याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा में सीमित धन ही उत्तम होता है, इसकी अपेक्षा कि अपार संपदा के साथ विपत्तियां भी संलग्न हों.

Better is a little, with the reverence of Yahweh, than great treasure, and disquietude therewith.

17 प्रेमपूर्ण वातावरण में मात्र सादा साग का भोजन ही उपयुक्त होता है, इसकी अपेक्षा कि अनेक व्यंजनों का आमिष भोज घृणा के साथ परोसा जाए.

Better is an allowance of herbs, and love, there, than a fatted ox, and hatred therewith.

18 क्रोधी स्वभाव का व्यक्ति कलह उत्पन्‍न करता है, किंतु क्रोध में विलंबी व्यक्ति कलह को शांत कर देता है.

A wrathful man, stirreth up strife, but, he that is slow to anger, calmeth contention.

19 मूर्खों की जीवनशैली कंटीली झाड़ी के समान होती है, किंतु धर्मी के जीवन का मार्ग सीधे-समतल राजमार्ग समान होता है.

The way of the sluggard, is like a thorn hedge, but, the path of the upright, is a raised road.

20 बुद्धिमान पुत्र अपने पिता के लिए आनंद एवं गर्व का विषय होता है, किंतु मूर्ख होता है वह, जिसे अपनी माता से घृणा होती है.

A wise son, maketh a glad father, —but, a dullard, despiseth his own mother.

21 समझ रहित व्यक्ति के लिए मूर्खता ही आनन्दप्रदायी मनोरंजन है, किंतु विवेकशील व्यक्ति धर्मी के मार्ग पर सीधा आगे बढ़ता जाता है.

Folly, is joy to him that lacketh sense, —but, a man of understanding, taketh a straight course.

22 उपयुक्त परामर्श के अभाव में योजनाएं विफल हो जाती हैं, किंतु अनेक परामर्शक उसे विफल नहीं होने देते.

Plans, are frustrated, for lack of consultation, but, by the multitude of counsellors, shall counsel, be established.

23 अवसर के अनुकूल दिया गया उपयुक्त उत्तर हर्ष का विषय होता है. कैसा मनोहर होता है, अवसर के अनुकूल दिया गया सुसंगत शब्द!

A man hath joy, in the answer of his own mouth, and, a word in its season, —how good!

24 बुद्धिमान और विवेकी व्यक्ति का जीवन मार्ग ऊपर की तरफ जाता है, कि वह नीचे, अधोलोक-उन्मुख मृत्यु के मार्ग से बच सके. (Sheol h7585)

The way of life, is upwards to the prudent, that he may depart from hades beneath. (Sheol h7585)

25 याहवेह अहंकारी के घर को चिथड़े-चिथड़े कर देते हैं, किंतु वह विधवा की सीमाएं सुरक्षित रखते हैं.

The house of proud men, will Yahweh tear down, but he will maintain the boundary of the widow.

26 दुष्ट का विचार मंडल ही याहवेह के लिए घृणित है, किंतु करुणामय बातें उन्हें सुखद लगती हैं.

An abomination to Yahweh, are the plottings of the wicked, but, with the pure, are sayings of sweetness.

27 लालची अपने ही परिवार में विपत्ति ले आता है. किंतु वह, जो घूस से घृणा करता है, जीवित रहता है.

He, troubleth his own house, who graspeth with greed, but, he that hateth gifts, shall live.

28 उत्तर देने के पूर्व धर्मी अपने हृदय में अच्छी रीति से विचार कर लेता है, किंतु दुष्ट के मुख से मात्र दुर्वचन ही निकलते हैं.

The heart of the righteous, studieth to answer, but, the mouth of the lawless, belcheth out mischiefs.

29 याहवेह धर्मी की प्रार्थना का उत्तर अवश्य देते हैं, किंतु वह दुष्टों से दूरी बनाए रखते हैं.

Far off is Yahweh, from the lawless, but, the prayer of the righteous, will he hear.

30 संदेशवाहक की नेत्रों में चमक सभी के हृदय में आनंद का संचार करती है, तथा शुभ संदेश अस्थियों तक में नवस्फूर्ति ले आता है.

The sparkling of bright eyes, rejoiceth the heart, Good news, giveth marrow to the bones.

31 वह व्यक्ति, जो जीवन-प्रदायी ताड़ना को स्वीकार करता है, बुद्धिमान के साथ निवास करेगा.

The ear that heareth the reproof which giveth life, in the midst of the wise, shall remain.

32 वह जो अनुशासन का परित्याग करता है, स्वयं से छल करता है, किंतु वह, जो प्रताड़ना स्वीकार करता है, समझ प्राप्‍त करता है.

He that declineth correction, despiseth his own soul, but, he that heareth reproof, gaineth sense.

33 वस्तुतः याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा ही ज्ञान उपलब्धि का साधन है, तथा विनम्रता महिमा की पूर्ववर्ती है.

The reverence of Yahweh, is the correction of wisdom, and, before honour, is humility.
