नीतिवचन 13

1 समझदार संतान अपने पिता की शिक्षा का पालन करती है, किंतु ठट्ठा करनेवाले के लिए फटकार भी प्रभावहीन होती है.

A wise son heareth the doctrine of his father: but he that is a scorner, beareth not when he is reproved.

2 मनुष्य अपनी बातों का ही प्रतिफल प्राप्‍त करता है, किंतु हिंसा ही विश्वासघाती का लक्ष्य होता है.

Of the fruit of his own mouth shall a man be filled with good things: but the soul of transgressors is wicked.

3 जो कोई अपने मुख पर नियंत्रण रखता है, वह अपने जीवन को सुरक्षित रखता है, किंतु वह, जो बिना विचारे बक-बक करता रहता है, अपना ही विनाश आमंत्रित कर लेता है.

He that keepeth his mouth, keepeth his soul: but he that hath no guard on his speech shall meet with evils.

4 आलसी मात्र लालसा ही करता रह जाता है. किंतु उसे प्राप्‍त कुछ भी नहीं होता, जबकि परिश्रमी की इच्छा पूर्ण हो जाती है.

The sluggard willeth and willeth not: but the soul of them that work, shall be made fat.

5 धर्मी के लिए झूठ घृणित है, किंतु दुष्ट दुर्गंध तथा घृणा ही समेटता है.

The just shall hate a lying word: but the wicked confoundeth, and shall be confounded.

6 जिसका चालचलन निर्दोष होता है, धार्मिकता उसकी सुरक्षा बन जाती है, किंतु पाप दुर्जन के समूल विनाश का कारण होता है.

Justice keepeth the way of the innocent: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

7 कोई तो धनाढ्य होने का प्रदर्शन करता है, किंतु वस्तुतः वह निर्धन होता है; अन्य ऐसा है, जो प्रदर्शित करता है कि वह निर्धन है, किंतु वस्तुतः वह है अत्यंत सम्पन्‍न!

One is as it were rich, when he hath nothing: and another is as it were poor, when he hath great riches.

8 धन किसी व्यक्ति के लिए छुटकारा हो सकता है, किंतु निर्धन पर यह स्थिति नहीं आती.

The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but he that is poor beareth not reprehension.

9 धर्मी आनन्दायी प्रखर ज्योति समान हैं, जबकि दुष्ट बुझे हुए दीपक समान.

The light of the just giveth joy: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

10 अहंकार और कुछ नहीं, कलह को ही जन्म देता है, किंतु वे, जो परामर्श का चालचलन करते हैं, बुद्धिमान प्रमाणित होते हैं.

Among the proud there are always contentions: but they that do all things with counsel, are ruled by wisdom.

11 बेईमानी का धन शीघ्र ही समाप्‍त भी हो जाता है, किंतु परिश्रम से प्राप्‍त किया धन बढ़ता जाता है.

Substance got in haste shall be diminished: but that which by little and little is gathered with the hand shall increase.

12 आशा की वस्तु उपलब्ध न होने पर हृदय खिन्‍न हो जाता है, किंतु अभिलाषा की पूर्ति जीवन वृक्ष प्रमाणित होती है.

Hope that is deferred afflicteth the soul: desire when it cometh is a tree of life.

13 वह, जो शिक्षा को तुच्छ दृष्टि से देखता है, स्वयं अपना विनाश आमंत्रित करता है, किंतु वह, जो आदेश का सम्मान करता है, उत्कृष्ट प्रतिफल प्राप्‍त करता है.

Whosoever speaketh ill of any thing, bindeth himself for the time to come: but he that feareth the commandment, shall dwell in peace. Deceitful souls go astray in sins: the just are merciful, and shew mercy.

14 बुद्धिमान की शिक्षा जीवन का सोता है, कि इससे मृत्यु के फन्दों से बचा जा सके.

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, that he may decline from the ruin of death.

15 सौहार्दपूर्ण संबंध सहज सुबुद्धि द्वारा स्थापित किए जाते हैं, किंतु विश्वासघाती की नीति उसी के विनाश का कारक होती है.

Good instruction shall give grace: in the way of scorners is a deep pit.

16 चतुर व्यक्ति के हर एक कार्य में ज्ञान झलकता है, किंतु मूर्ख अपनी मूर्खता ही उछालता रहता है.

The prudent mall doth all things with counsel: but he that is a fool, layeth open his folly.

17 कुटिल संदेशवाहक विपत्ति में जा पड़ता है, किंतु विश्वासयोग्य संदेशवाहक मेल-मिलाप करवा देता है.

The messenger of the wicked shall fall into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

18 निर्धनता और लज्जा, उसी के हाथ लगती हैं, जो शिक्षा की उपेक्षा करता है, किंतु सम्मानित वह होता है, जो ताड़ना स्वीकार करता है.

Poverty and shame to him that refuseth instruction: but he that yieldeth to reproof, shall be glorified.

19 अभिलाषा की पूर्ति प्राणों में मधुरता का संचार करती है, किंतु बुराई का परित्याग मूर्ख को अप्रिय लगता है.

The desire that is accomplished, delighteth the soul: fools hate them that flee from evil things.

20 वह, जो ज्ञानवान की संगति में रहता है, ज्ञानवान हो जाता है, किंतु मूर्खों के साथियों को हानि का सामना करना होगा.

He that walketh with the wise, shall be wise: a friend of fools shall become like to them.

21 विपत्ति पापियों के पीछे लगी रहती है, किंतु धर्मी का प्रतिफल होता है कल्याण.

Evil pursueth sinners: and to the just good shall be repaid.

22 सज्जन संतान की संतान के लिए धन छोड़ जाता है, किंतु पापियों की निधि धर्मी को प्राप्‍त होती है.

The good man leaveth heirs, sons, and grandsons: and the substance of the sinner is kept for the just.

23 यह संभव है कि साधारण किसान की भूमि उत्तम उपज लाए, किंतु अन्यायी उसे हड़प लेता है.

Much food is in the tillage of fathers: but for others it is gathered with out judgment.

24 जो पिता अपने पुत्र को दंड नहीं देता, उसे अपने पुत्र से प्रेम नहीं है, किंतु जिसे अपने पुत्र से प्रेम है, वह बड़ी सावधानीपूर्वक उसे अनुशासन में रखता है.

He that spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes.

25 धर्मी को उसकी भूख मिटाने के लिए पर्याप्‍त भोजन रहता है, किंतु दुष्ट सदैव अतृप्‍त ही बने रहते हैं.

The just eateth and filleth his soul: but the belly of the wicked is never to be filled.
