नीतिवचन 11

1 अशुद्ध माप याहवेह के लिए घृणास्पद है, किंतु शुद्ध तोल माप उनके लिए आनंद है.

Balances of deceit are an abomination of the Lord; but a full weight [obtaineth] his favor.

2 जब कभी अभिमान सिर उठाता है, लज्जा उसके पीछे-पीछे चली आती है, किंतु विनम्रता ज्ञान का मार्ग प्रशस्त करती है.

When pride cometh, then cometh disgrace; but with the modest there is wisdom.

3 ईमानदार की सत्यनिष्ठा उनका मार्गदर्शन करती है, किंतु विश्वासघाती व्यक्ति की कुटिलता उसके विनाश का कारक होती है.

The integrity of the upright guideth them; but the cunning of the treacherous destroyeth them.

4 प्रकोप के दिन में धन-संपत्ति निरर्थक सिद्ध होती है, मात्र धार्मिकता मृत्यु से सुरक्षा प्रदान करती है.

Wealth cannot profit on the day of wrath; but righteousness deliver from death.

5 निर्दोष की धार्मिकता ही उसके मार्ग को सीधा बना देती है, किंतु दुष्ट अपनी ही दुष्टता के कारण नाश में जा पड़ता है.

The righteousness of the perfect maketh even his way; but by his own wickedness will the wicked fall.

6 ईमानदार की धार्मिकता ही उसकी सुरक्षा है, किंतु कृतघ्न व्यक्ति अपनी वासना के जाल में उलझ जाते हैं.

The righteousness of the upright will deliver them; but through their own sinful desires are the treacherous caught.

7 जब दुष्ट की मृत्यु होती है, उसकी आशा भी बुझ जाती है, और बलवान की आशा शून्य रह जाती है.

When a wicked man dieth, [his] hope vanisheth; and the expectation of his children is lost.

8 धर्मी विपत्ति से बचता हुआ आगे बढ़ता जाता है, किंतु दुष्ट उसी में फंस जाता है.

The righteous is delivered out of distress, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

9 अभक्त लोग मात्र अपने शब्दों के द्वारा अपने पड़ोसी का नाश कर देता है, किंतु धर्मी का छुटकारा ज्ञान में होता है.

With his mouth doth the hypocrite destroy his neighbor; but through knowledge are the righteous delivered.

10 धर्मी की सफलता में संपूर्ण नगर आनंदित होता है, और जब दुर्जन नष्ट होते हैं, जयघोष गूंज उठते हैं.

When it goeth well with the righteous, the town rejoiceth loudly: and when the wicked perish, there is joyful shouting.

11 ईमानदार के आशीर्वाद से नगर की प्रतिष्ठा बढ़ जाती है, किंतु दुर्जन का वक्तव्य ही उसे ध्वस्त कर देता है.

Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted; but through the mouth of the wicked it is pulled down.

12 निर्बुद्धि व्यक्ति ही अपने पड़ोसी को तुच्छ समझता है, किंतु समझदार व्यक्ति चुपचाप बना रहता है.

He that despiseth his neighbor is void of sense; but a man of understanding maintaineth silence.

13 निंदक के लिए गोपनीयता बनाए रखना संभव नहीं होता, किंतु विश्वासपात्र रहस्य छुपाए रखता है.

He that walketh about as talebearer revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

14 मार्गदर्शन के अभाव में राष्ट्र का पतन हो जाता है, किंतु अनेक सलाह देनेवाले मंत्रियों के होने पर राष्ट्र सुरक्षित हो जाता है.

Where there is no wise guidance, a people must fall: but [it will obtain] help through the multitude of counsellors.

15 यह सुनिश्चित ही है कि यदि किसी ने किसी अपरिचित की ज़मानत ले ली है, उसकी हानि अवश्य होगी, किंतु वह, जो ऐसी शपथ करने की भूल नहीं करता, सुरक्षित रहता है.

With evil will he be overwhelmed that is surety for a stranger: but he that hateth giving the hand as pledge is safe.

16 कृपावान स्त्री का ज्ञान है सम्मान, किंतु क्रूर व्यक्ति के हाथ मात्र धन ही लगता है.

A woman endowed with grace will surely obtain honor; and the powerful will obtain riches.

17 कृपा करने के द्वारा मनुष्य अपना ही हित करता है, किंतु क्रूर व्यक्ति स्वयं का नुकसान कर लेता है.

The man of kindness doth good to his own soul; but he that troubleth his own flesh is cruel.

18 दुर्जन का वेतन वस्तुतः छल ही होता है, किंतु जो धर्म का बीज रोपण करता है, उसे निश्चयतः सार्थक प्रतिफल प्राप्‍त होता है.

The wicked practiseth a work of falsehood; but he that soweth righteousness [obtaineth] the reward of truth.

19 वह, जो धर्म में दृढ़ रहता है, जीवित रहता है, किंतु जो बुराई का चालचलन करता है, वह जीवित न रहेगा.

He who is firm in righteousness attaineth to life: and he that pursueth evil [doth it] to his own death.

20 याहवेह की दृष्टि में कुटिल हृदय घृणास्पद है, किंतु उनके निमित्त निर्दोष व्यक्ति प्रसन्‍न है.

An abomination of the Lord are those of a perverse heart; but his favor is for those who are unblemished in their way.

21 यह सुनिश्चित है कि दुष्ट दंडित अवश्य किया जाएगा, किंतु धर्मी की सन्तति सुरक्षित रहेगी.

The hand [of God] being against [his] hand, the bad man shall not go unpunished; but the seed of the righteous shall escape.

22 विवेकहीन सुंदर स्त्री वैसी ही होती है जैसी सूअर के थूथन में सोने की नथ.

As a golden ring in a swine's snout, so is a handsome woman that hath thrown off discretion.

23 धर्मी की आकांक्षा का परिणाम उत्तम ही होता है, किंतु दुष्ट की आशा कोप ले आती है.

The desire of the righteous is only good: but the hope of the wicked is the wrath [of God].

24 कोई तो उदारतापूर्वक दान करते है, फिर भी अधिकाधिक धनाढ्य होता जाता है; किंतु अन्य है जो उसे दबाकर रखता है, और फिर भी वह तंगी में ही रहता है.

There is a man that scattereth gifts, and yet his wealth is increased: and there is one that withholdeth more than is proper, and still cometh only to want.

25 जो कोई उदारता से देता है, वह सम्पन्‍न होता जाएगा; और वह, जो अन्यों को सांत्वना देता है, वह सांत्वना पायेगा!

A beneficent soul will be abundantly gratified; and he that refresheth [others] will be also refreshed himself.

26 उसे, जो अनाज को दबाए रखता है, लोग शाप देते हैं, किंतु उसे, जो अनाज जनता को बेचता जाता है, लोग आशीर्वाद देते हैं.

Him that withholdeth corn, the people will denounce; but blessing will be heaped upon the head of the one that selleth it.

27 जो कोई भलाई की खोज करता है, वह प्रसन्‍नता प्राप्‍त करता है, किंतु वह, जो बुराई को ढूंढता है, वह उसी को मिल जाती है.

He that diligently searcheth after good seeketh favor; but if one inquireth after evil, it will come unto him.

28 धर्मी नई पत्तियों के समान पल्लवित होंगे, किंतु उसका पतन निश्चित है, जिसने अपनी धन-संपत्ति पर आशा रखी है.

He that trusteth in his riches will surely fall; but the righteous shall grow like the leaves [of a tree].

29 जो कोई अपने परिवार की विपत्ति का कारण होता है, वह केवल हवा का वारिस होगा, मूर्ख को कुशाग्रबुद्धि के व्यक्ति के अधीन ही सेवा करनी पड़ती है.

He that troubleth his own house will inherit the wind; and the fool will become the servant to the wise of heart.

30 धर्मी का प्रतिफल है जीवन वृक्ष और ज्ञानवान है वह, जो आत्माओं का विजेता है.

The fruit of the righteous is of the tree of life, and the wise draweth souls to himself.

31 यदि पार्थिव जीवन में ही धर्मी को उसके सत्कर्मों का प्रतिफल प्राप्‍त हो जाता है, तो दुष्टों और पापियों को क्यों नहीं!

Behold, the righteous is recompensed on the earth: how much more the wicked and the sinner.
