नीतिवचन 10
1 शलोमोन के ज्ञान सूत्र निम्न लिखित हैं: बुद्धिमान संतान पिता के आनंद का विषय होती है, किंतु मूर्ख संतान माता के शोक का कारण.
The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth [his] father to rejoice; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
2 बुराई द्वारा प्राप्त किया धन लाभ में वृद्धि नहीं करता, धार्मिकता मृत्यु से सुरक्षित रखती है.
Treasures of wickedness will not profit aught; but righteousness will deliver from death.
3 याहवेह धर्मी व्यक्ति को भूखा रहने के लिए छोड़ नहीं देते, किंतु वह दुष्ट की लालसा पर अवश्य पानी फेर देते हैं.
The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but the sinful desires of the wicked will he cast away.
4 निर्धनता का कारण होता है आलस्य, किंतु परिश्रमी का प्रयास ही उसे समृद्ध बना देता है.
He becometh poor that laboreth with an indolent hand, but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
5 बुद्धिमान है वह पुत्र, जो ग्रीष्मकाल में ही आहार संचित कर रखता है, किंतु वह जो फसल के दौरान सोता है वह एक अपमानजनक पुत्र है.
He that gathereth in summer is an intelligent son; [but] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
6 धर्मी आशीषें प्राप्त करते जाते हैं, किंतु दुष्ट में हिंसा ही समाई रहती है.
Blessings come upon the head of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
7 धर्मी का जीवन ही आशीर्वाद-स्वरूप स्मरण किया जाता है, किंतु दुष्ट का नाम ही मिट जाता है.
The memory of the just is [destined] to be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
8 बुद्धिमान आदेशों को हृदय से स्वीकार करेगा, किंतु बकवादी मूर्ख विनष्ट होता जाएगा.
The wise in heart will accept commandments; but he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
9 जिस किसी का चालचलन सच्चाई का है, वह सुरक्षित है, किंतु वह, जो कुटिल मार्ग अपनाता है, पकड़ा जाता है.
He that walketh uprightly ever walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways will be punished.
10 जो कोई आंख मारता है, वह समस्या उत्पन्न कर देता है, किंतु बकवादी मूर्ख विनष्ट हो जाएगा.
He that winketh with the eye causeth vexation; and he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
11 धर्मी के मुख से निकले वचन जीवन का सोता हैं, किंतु दुष्ट अपने मुख में हिंसा छिपाए रहता है.
A source of life is the mouth of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
12 घृणा कलह की जननी है, किंतु प्रेम सभी अपराधों पर आवरण डाल देता है.
Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love throweth a cover over all transgressions.
13 समझदार व्यक्ति के होंठों पर ज्ञान का वास होता है, किंतु अज्ञानी के लिए दंड ही निर्धारित है.
On the lips of the man of understanding there is found wisdom: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of sense.
14 बुद्धिमान ज्ञान का संचयन करते हैं, किंतु मूर्ख की बातें विनाश आमंत्रित करती है.
Wise men treasure up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an approaching terror.
15 धनी व्यक्ति के लिए उसका धन एक गढ़ के समान होता है, किंतु निर्धन की गरीबी उसे ले डूबती है.
The wealth of the rich man is his strong town: the terror of the poor is their poverty.
16 धर्मी का ज्ञान उसे जीवन प्रदान करता है, किंतु दुष्ट की उपलब्धि होता है पाप.
The labor of the righteous [tendeth] to life: the product of the wicked is for sin.
17 जो कोई सावधानीपूर्वक शिक्षा का चालचलन करता है, वह जीवन मार्ग पर चल रहा होता है, किंतु जो ताड़ना की अवमानना करता है, अन्यों को भटका देता है.
On the way unto life is he that observeth correction; but he that forsaketh reproof is in error.
18 वह, जो घृणा को छिपाए रहता है, झूठा होता है और वह व्यक्ति मूर्ख प्रमाणित होता है, जो निंदा करता फिरता है.
He that hideth hatred hath lips of falsehood; and he that spreadeth abroad an evil report, is a fool.
19 जहां अधिक बातें होती हैं, वहां अपराध दूर नहीं रहता, किंतु जो अपने मुख पर नियंत्रण रखता है, वह बुद्धिमान है.
In a multitude of words transgression cannot be avoided; but he that refraineth his lips is intelligent.
20 धर्मी की वाणी उत्कृष्ट चांदी तुल्य है; दुष्ट के विचारों का कोई मूल्य नहीं होता.
[Like] choice silver is the tongue of the righteous: the heart of the wicked is worth but very little.
21 धर्मी के उद्गार अनेकों को तृप्त कर देते हैं, किंतु बोध के अभाव में ही मूर्ख मृत्यु का कारण हो जाते हैं.
The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die through lack of sense.
22 याहवेह की कृपादृष्टि समृद्धि का मर्म है. वह इस कृपादृष्टि में दुःख को नहीं मिलाता.
The blessing of the Lord it is which maketh rich, and painful labor addeth nothing thereto.
23 जैसे अनुचित कार्य करना मूर्ख के लिए हंसी का विषय है, वैसे ही बुद्धिमान के समक्ष विद्वत्ता आनंद का विषय है.
It is as sport to a fool to do wicked deeds; but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
24 जो आशंका दुष्ट के लिए भयास्पद होती है, वही उस पर घटित हो जाती है; किंतु धर्मी की मनोकामना पूर्ण होकर रहती है.
What the wicked dreadeth, that will come upon him: but the longing of the righteous will God grant.
25 बवंडर के निकल जाने पर दुष्ट शेष नहीं रह जाता, किंतु धर्मी चिरस्थायी बना रहता है.
As the whirlwind passeth by, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
26 आलसी संदेशवाहक अपने प्रेषक पर वैसा ही प्रभाव छोड़ता है, जैसा सिरका दांतों पर और धुआं नेत्रों पर.
As vinegar is to the teeth, and as smoke is to the eyes: so is the sluggard to those that send him.
27 याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा से आयु बढ़ती जाती है, किंतु थोड़े होते हैं दुष्ट के आयु के वर्ष.
The fear of the Lord increaseth [man's] days; but the years of the wicked will be shortened.
28 धर्मी की आशा में आनंद का उद्घाटन होता है, किंतु दुर्जन की आशा निराशा में बदल जाती है.
The expectation of the righteous is joy; but the hope of the wicked shall perish.
29 निर्दोष के लिए याहवेह का विधान एक सुरक्षित आश्रय है, किंतु बुराइयों के निमित्त सर्वनाश.
The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright; but terror is destined to the workers of injustice.
30 धर्मी सदैव अटल और स्थिर बने रहते हैं, किंतु दुष्ट पृथ्वी पर निवास न कर सकेंगे.
The righteous shall never be removed; but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
31 धर्मी अपने बोलने में ज्ञान का संचार करते हैं, किंतु कुटिल की जीभ काट दी जाएगी.
The mouth of the just uttereth wisdom; but the tongue of perverseness shall be cut out.
32 धर्मी में यह सहज बोध रहता है, कि उसका कौन सा उद्गार स्वीकार्य होगा, किंतु दुष्ट के शब्द कुटिल विषय ही बोलते हैं.
The lips of the righteous know [how to obtain] favor; but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] perverseness.
