नहेमायाह 5

1 इसी समय लोगों और उनकी पत्नियों ने उनके यहूदी साथियों के साथ झगड़ना शुरू कर दिया.

Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

2 इसका कारण था वे लोग, जो यह कह रहे थे “हम, हमारे पुत्र और हमारी पुत्रियां गिनती में बहुत हैं; इसलिये हमें अनाज दिया जाए कि हम उसे खाकर ज़िंदा रह सकें.”

For there were that said: 'We, our sons and our daughters, are many; let us get for them corn, that we may eat and live.'

3 कुछ और भी थे, जो कह रहे थे “हमने अपने खेत, हमारे अंगूर के बगीचे और अपने घर गिरवी रखे हुए हैं कि इस अकाल की स्थिति में हमें अनाज तो मिल सके.”

Some also there were that said: 'We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses; let us get corn, because of the dearth.'

4 इनके अलावा भी कुछ और थे, जो यह कह रहे थे “हमने अपने खेतों और अंगूर के बगीचों पर राजा द्वारा ठहराया गया कर भरने के लिए कर्ज़ लिया हुआ है.

There were also that said: 'We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards.

5 हम भी अपने भाई-बंधुओं के समान हड्डी-मांस के ही हैं, हमारी संतान उनकी संतान के समान ही है; फिर भी देख लीजिए हमें अपने पुत्र-पुत्रियों को दास होने के लिए सौंपने के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ रहा है. हमारी कुछ पुत्रियां तो पहले ही ज़बरदस्ती बंधक बना ली गई हैं. अब हम निस्सहाय रह गए हैं, क्योंकि हमारे खेत और अंगूर के बगीचे अब दूसरों के अधिकार में चले गए हैं.”

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.'

6 उनकी शिकायतें और बातें सुन मैं बहुत ही क्रोधित हो गया.

And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

7 मैंने अपने मन में सोचा, फिर ऊंचे पदाधिकारियों और शासकों से भी सलाह ली और फिर मैंने उनसे कहा, “आप में से हर एक अपने ही भाई-बन्धु से ज़बरदस्ती ब्याज वसूली कर रहा है!” इसलिये मैंने उनके विरुद्ध एक बड़ी सभा की.

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them: 'Ye lend upon pledge, every one to his brother.' And I held a great assembly against them.

8 उनसे मैंने कहा, “हमने अपनी शक्ति भर उन यहूदी भाई-बंधुओं को दाम देकर उन देशों से छुड़ाया है, जहां उन्हें बेच दिया गया था. अब क्या आप लोग इन्हें दोबारा उन्हीं को बेचते जाएंगे, कि हमें उन्हें एक बार फिर उनसे खरीदना पड़े?” वे चुप रहे और अपने बचाव में कहने के लिए उनके पास कुछ भी न था.

And I said unto them: 'We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that sold themselves unto the heathen; and would ye nevertheless sell your brethren, and should they sell themselves unto us?' Then held they their peace, and found never a word.

9 मैंने उन्हें दोबारा चेतावनी दी, “आप जो कुछ कर रहे हैं, वह गलत है. हमारे शत्रु देश हमारी निंदा करें, इस बात का ध्यान रखते हुए क्या यह सही नहीं कि आप अपने परमेश्वर का भय मानकर चलें?

Also I said: 'The thing that ye do is not good; ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

10 खुद मैंने, मेरे भाइयों ने और मेरे सेवकों ने उन्हें उधार के रूप में सिक्‍के और अनाज देना शुरू कर दिया है. कृपा कर हम उनसे यह ज़बरदस्ती भुगतान कराना बंद कर दें.

And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, have lent them money and corn. I pray you, let us leave off this exaction.

11 कृपा कर आज ही उन्हें उनके खेत, अंगूर के बगीचे, उनके जैतून के बगीचे और उनके घर उन्हें लौटा दें. इसके अलावा उनका धन, अनाज, नई दाखमधु और तेल का सौवां भाग भी, जो आप उनसे ज़बरदस्ती ले रहे है.”

Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundred pieces of silver, and the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.'

12 उन्होंने इसके उत्तर में कहा, “हम उन्हें यह सब लौटा देंगे, उनसे कुछ भी ज़बरदस्ती नहीं लेंगे. वही करेंगे, जो आप के द्वारा सुझाया गया है.” तब मैंने पुरोहितों को बुलवा लिया और उनसे यह शपथ ले ली कि वे इस प्रतिज्ञा के अनुसार ही करेंगे.

Then said they: 'We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest.' Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

13 तब मैंने अपने बाहरी कपड़े के सामने का छोर झटकते हुए कहा, “परमेश्वर ऐसे हर एक मनुष्य को उसके घर से और उसकी संपत्ति से ठीक उसी प्रकार झटक दे, जो इस शपथ को पूरी न करेगा, यहां तक कि उसे इस तरह हिला दिया जाए कि वह पूरी तरह खाली ही हो जाए.” यह सुन सारी सभा कह उठी, “आमेन!” और उनके मुंह से याहवेह की स्तुति निकली. लोगों ने अपनी शपथ के अनुसार ही किया.

Also I shook out my lap, and said: 'So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.' And all the congregation said: 'Amen', and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

14 राजा अर्तहषस्ता के राज्य-काल के बीसवें साल से बत्तीसवें साल तक; बारह साल, जिस दिन से मुझे यहूदिया का राज्यपाल बनाया गया था, न तो मैंने और न मेरे रिश्तेदारों ने राज्यपाल के लिए तय किया गया भोजन खाया.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

15 मुझसे पहले के राज्यपालों ने तो प्रजा पर भारी बोझ लाद दिया था. वे उनसे उनका भोजन और अंगूरों का रस छीन लिया करते थे, साथ ही चांदी के चालीस शकेल भी; यहां तक कि उनके साथी सेवक तक प्रजा का शोषण किया करते थे. परमेश्वर का भय मानने के कारण मैं ऐसा न कर सका.

But the former governors that were before me laid burdens upon the people, and took of them for bread and wine above forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants lorded over the people; but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

16 मैंने खुद को शहरपनाह बनाने के काम में लगा दिया. हमने कोई भी ज़मीन नहीं खरीदी. मेरे सभी सेवक इस काम के लिए वहां इकट्‍ठे हो जाते थे.

Yea, also I set hand to the work of this wall, neither bought we any land; and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

17 मेरे भोजन की मेज़ पर हमारे पास के देशों से आए लोगों के अलावा एक सौ पचास यहूदी और अधिकारी हुआ करते थे.

Moreover there were at my table of the Jews and the rulers a hundred and fifty men, beside those that came unto us from among the nations that were round about us.

18 मेरे हर रोज़ के भोजन के लिए एक बैल, छः सबसे अच्छी भेड़ें और कुछ पक्षी तैयार किए जाते थे. दस दिन में एक बार तरह-तरह की दाखमधु बड़ी मात्रा में परोसी जाती थी. इतना सब होने पर भी मैंने राज्यपाल के लिए ठहराया गया भोजन नहीं मंगवाया; क्योंकि वैसे भी प्रजा बोझ के नीचे दबी जा रही थी.

Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep, also fowls were prepared for me; and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine; yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the service was heavy upon this people.

19 मेरे परमेश्वर, मेरे द्वारा इस प्रजा के हित में किए गए सभी कामों के लिए मुझे याद रखियेगा.

Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.
