यिर्मयाह 38

1 इसी समय मत्तान के पुत्र शेपाथियाह, पशहूर के पुत्र गेदालियाह, शेलेमियाह के पुत्र यूकल तथा मालखियाह के पुत्र पशहूर ने येरेमियाह को यह सार्वजनिक घोषणा करते सुना,

And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people, saying,

2 “याहवेह का संदेश यह है: ‘जो कोई इस नगर में ठहरा रह जाएगा, वह तलवार, अकाल अथवा महामारी से ग्रसित होकर रहेगा, किंतु वह, जो नगर से बाहर कसदियों की शरण ले लेगा, वह जीवित रह जाएगा. उसका जीवन युद्ध में प्राप्‍त लूट सामग्री सदृश उसका उपहार हो जाएगा और वह जीवित रहेगा.’

Thus says Jehovah: He who abides in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey, and he shall live.

3 यह याहवेह की वाणी है: ‘निश्चयतः यह नगर बाबेल के राजा की सेना के अधीन कर दिया जाएगा, वह इस पर अधिकार कर लेगा.’”

Thus says Jehovah: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.

4 यह सुन अधिकारियों ने राजा के समक्ष प्रस्ताव रखा, “अब तो इस व्यक्ति को प्राण-दंड दिया जाना ही उपयुक्त होगा, क्योंकि इसकी इस वाणी से इस नगर में शेष रह गए सैनिकों तथा शेष रह गई सारी प्रजा के मनोबल का ह्रास हो रहा है. यह व्यक्ति प्रजा की हितकामना नहीं, बल्कि संकट का ही प्रयास कर रहा है.”

Then the rulers said to the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death, inasmuch as he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them. For this man seeks not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 तब राजा सीदकियाहू ने उन्हें उत्तर दिया, “वह तुम्हारे हाथ में है; मैं किसी भी रीति से आपके विरुद्ध कुछ नहीं कर सकता.”

And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand, for the king is not he who can do anything against you.

6 तब उन्होंने येरेमियाह को पकड़कर एक अंधे कुएं में डाल दिया, यह राजपुत्र मालखियाह का अंधा कुंआ था. यह पहरे के आंगन में ही था; उन्होंने येरेमियाह को इसमें रस्सियों द्वारा उतार दिया. इस अंधे कुएं में जल नहीं, मात्र कीचड़ ही शेष रह गया था ओर येरेमियाह उस कीचड़ में धंस गए.

Then they took Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire, and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 किंतु महलों में नियुक्त एबेद-मेलेख नामक कूश देशवासी खोजे को यह ज्ञात हो गया कि उन्होंने येरेमियाह को अंधे कुएं में डाल दिया है. इस समय राजा बिन्यामिन प्रवेश द्वार पर आसन लगाए हुए था,

Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin),

8 एबेद-मेलेख ने महलों से जाकर राजा से यह कहा,

Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spoke to the king, saying,

9 “मेरे स्वामी, महाराज, इन लोगों ने आरंभ ही से भविष्यद्वक्ता येरेमियाह के साथ जो कुछ किया है, दुष्टतापूर्ण कृत्य ही किया है. जिन्हें इन्होंने अब अंधे कुएं में डाल दिया है, वहां तो भूख से उनकी मृत्यु निश्चित है, नगर में वैसे भी अब रोटी शेष रह ही नहीं गई है.”

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the dungeon. And he is likely to die in the place where he is because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city.

10 यह सुन राजा ने कूश देशवासी एबेद-मेलेख को आदेश दिया, “अपने साथ तीस पुरुषों को अपने अधिकार में लेकर जाओ और भविष्यद्वक्ता येरेमियाह को अंधे कुएं से बाहर निकाल लो, इसके पूर्व कि उनकी वहीं मृत्यु हो जाए.”

Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies.

11 तब एबेद-मेलेख अपने साथ के व्यक्ति लेकर महल में गया. वहां जाकर उसने महलों के भण्डारगृह के नीचे निर्मित एक कक्ष में से कुछ चिथड़े निकाले और उन्हें रस्सियों द्वारा अंधे कुएं में येरेमियाह तक पहुंचा दिया.

So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

12 तत्पश्चात कूश देशवासी एबेद-मेलेख ने येरेमियाह से कहा, “इन पुराने वस्त्रों को रस्सियों के नीचे अपनी बगलों में दबा लीजिए.” येरेमियाह ने ऐसा ही किया,

And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Now put these rags and worn-out garments under thine armpits under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

13 तब उन्होंने येरेमियाह को रस्सियों से ऊपर खींच लिया और उन्हें अंधे कुएं से बाहर निकाल लिया. येरेमियाह तब पहरे के आंगन में ही ठहरे रहे.

So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

14 कुछ समय बाद राजा सीदकियाहू ने भविष्यद्वक्ता येरेमियाह को याहवेह के भवन के तीसरे प्रवेश द्वार पर बुलवाया. राजा ने येरेमियाह से कहा, “मैं आपसे कुछ प्रश्न करूंगा, मुझसे कुछ न छिपाइए.”

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah. And the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

15 येरेमियाह ने सीदकियाहू से ही प्रश्न किया, “जब मैं आपको उत्तर दूंगा, क्या यह सुनिश्चित नहीं है कि आप मेरा वध करवा ही देंगे? इसके सिवा यदि मैं आपको कोई परामर्श दूंगा, आप तो उसका पालन करेंगे नहीं.”

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to thee, will thou not surely put me to death? And if I give thee counsel, thou will not hearken to me.

16 किंतु राजा सीदकियाहू ने गुप्‍त में येरेमियाह से शपथ खाते हुए कहा: “जीवित याहवेह की शपथ, जिन्होंने आपको और मुझे जीवन दिया है, यह निश्चित है, कि मैं न तो आपका वध करवाऊंगा न ही आपको इन व्यक्तियों के हाथों में सौंपूंगा, जो आपके प्राण लेने को तैयार हैं.”

So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah lives, who made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, nor will I give thee into the hand of these men who seek thy life.

17 तब येरेमियाह ने सीदकियाहू को उत्तर दिया, “इस्राएल के परमेश्वर, सेनाओं के याहवेह का संदेश यह है: ‘सत्य यह है कि यदि आप बाहर जाएं और बाबेल के राजा के अधिकारियों के समक्ष समर्पण कर दें, तब आप जीवित रहेंगे, यह नगर अग्नि के द्वारा भस्म नहीं किया जाएगा और तब आप और आपका परिवार जीवित रह सकेगा.

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel. If thou will go forth to the king of Babylon's rulers, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and thou shall live, and thy house.

18 किंतु यदि आप बाहर जाकर बाबेल के राजा के अधिकारियों के समक्ष समर्पण नहीं करते, तो यह नगर कसदियों को सौंप दिया जाएगा; वे इसे अग्नि से भस्म कर देंगे तथा स्वयं आप भी उनके हाथों से बच निकल न सकेंगे.’”

But if thou will not go forth to the king of Babylon's rulers, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shall not escape out of their hand.

19 तब राजा सीदकियाहू ने येरेमियाह से कहा, “मुझे भय है उन यहूदियों से जो कसदियों से जा मिले हैं, यह संभव है कि कसदी मुझे उनके हाथों में सौंप दें और वे मेरी हालत बुरी कर दें.”

And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews who have fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they abuse me.

20 “कसदी आपको उनके हाथों में नहीं सौंपेंगे.” येरेमियाह ने उसे उत्तर दिया. “आप कृपा कर मेरे कहे अनुसार याहवेह के आदेश का पालन कीजिए, कि आपका कल्याण हो और आप जीवित रहें.

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak to thee, so it shall be well with thee, and thy soul shall live.

21 किंतु यदि आप बाहर जाने को टालते रहेंगे, तो याहवेह द्वारा आपके लिए मुझे दिया गया संदेश यह है:

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that Jehovah has shown me:

22 तब आप देखना, यहूदिया के राजा के महलों में जितनी भी स्त्रियां शेष रह गई है, वे बाबेल के राजा के अधिकारियों के समक्ष प्रस्तुत की जाएंगी. जब वे यहां से जा रही होंगी, वे इस प्रकार कटाक्ष करेंगी: “‘तुम्हारे घनिष्ठ मित्रों ने ही तुम्हें दूर— तथा आक्रांत कर दिया है. जब तुम्हारे कदम दलदल में फंसे हुए थे; वे तुम्हें पीठ दिखाकर चले गए.’

Behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's rulers. And those women shall say, Thy familiar friends have set upon thee, and have prevailed over thee. Since thy feet are sunk in the mire, they have turned back away.

23 “वे तुम्हारी पत्नियों एवं बालकों को निकालकर कसदियों को सौंप देंगे. आप स्वयं उनसे छूटकर बच न सकेंगे, बल्कि तुम बाबेल के राजा द्वारा बंदी बना लिए जाओगे; यह नगर अग्नि से भस्म कर दिया जाएगा.”

And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy sons to the Chaldeans. And thou shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. And thou shall cause this city to be burned with fire.

24 यह सुन सीदकियाहू ने येरेमियाह से कहा, “किसी को भी इस वार्तालाप के विषय में ज्ञात न होने पाए, आपकी मृत्यु न होगी.

Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shall not die.

25 किंतु फिर भी, यदि अधिकारियों को यह ज्ञात हो जाए कि मैंने आपसे वार्तालाप किया है और तब वे आकर आपसे आग्रह करेंगे, ‘अब तो हमें बता दो, कि तुमने राजा को क्या-क्या बता दिया है और राजा ने तुमसे क्या-क्या कहा है; यदि तुम हमसे कुछ नहीं छिपाओगे तो हम तुम्हारा वध नहीं करेंगे,’

But if the rulers hear that I have talked with thee, and they come to thee, and say to thee, Declare to us now what thou have said to the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death, also what the king said to thee,

26 तब तुम्हारा प्रत्युत्तर यह होगा, ‘मैं राजा के समक्ष अपनी याचना प्रस्तुत कर रहा था, कि मुझे पुनः योनातन के आवास में न भेजा जाए, कि वहां मेरी मृत्यु हो जाए.’”

then thou shall say to them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house to die there.

27 तब सभी अधिकारी येरेमियाह के पास आ गए और उनसे पूछताछ करने लगे, येरेमियाह ने उन्हें वही उत्तर दिया, जैसा उन्हें राजा द्वारा निर्देश दिया गया था. तब उन्होंने पूछताछ बंद कर दी, क्योंकि वस्तुस्थिति यही थी, कि किसी को भी यह ज्ञात न था कि राजा तथा येरेमियाह के मध्य वार्तालाप विषय वास्तव में क्या था.

Then all the rulers came to Jeremiah, and asked him. And he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him, for the matter was not perceived.

28 येरेमियाह येरूशलेम के पतन के दिन तक पहरे के आंगन में ही निवास करते रहे.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.
