एज्रा 4

1 जब यहूदिया तथा बिन्यामिन प्रदेश के शत्रुओं को यह मालूम चला, कि बंधुआई से लौट आए लोग इस्राएल के याहवेह परमेश्वर के लिए भवन बना रहे हैं,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building the temple to the LORD God of Israel;

2 तब उन्होंने ज़ेरुब्बाबेल तथा कुल के प्रधानों से जाकर विनती की, “हमें अनुमति दीजिए कि हम इस भवन बनाने के काम में आप लोगों के साथ जुट जाएं; क्योंकि आपके समान हम भी आपके ही परमेश्वर के आराधक हैं; हम अश्शूर के राजा एसारहद्दन के शासनकाल से इन्हीं परमेश्वर के लिए बलि चढ़ाते आ रहें हैं, जो हमें यहां लेकर आए हैं.”

Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of the fathers, and said to them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we sacrifice to him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, who brought us up here.

3 किंतु ज़ेरुब्बाबेल, येशुआ तथा कुल के प्रधानों ने उन्हें उत्तर दिया, “तुममें तथा हममें हमारे परमेश्वर के लिए भवन बनाने के संबंध में कुछ भी संबंध नहीं है. इस्राएल के याहवेह के लिए हम ही मिलकर यह बनाएंगे, जैसा कि फारस के राजा कोरेश ने हमें आज्ञा दी है.”

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, said to them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

4 यह देख उस देश के लोग यहूदाह के वंशजों को ड़राते हुए इस काम में रुकावट डालने लगे.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 इस उद्देश्य से उन लोगों ने फारस देश के मंत्रियों को घूस दे दी, कि वे इस काम में रुकावट पैदा करें, यह सिर्फ फारस के शासक कोरेश के ही नहीं बल्कि फारस पर दारयावेश के शासन के समय तक करते रहे.

And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 उन्होंने अहषवेरोष के शासनकाल की शुरुआत में ही यहूदिया एवं येरूशलेम निवासियों के विरुद्ध एक आरोप पत्र लिखकर दिया.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote to him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 अर्तहषस्ता के शासनकाल में बिशलाम, मिथरेदाथ, तबील तथा उसके बाकी सहयोगियों ने मिलकर फारस के राजा अर्तहषस्ता को पत्र लिखा. इस पत्र को अरामी भाषा में लिखा गया था, किंतु इसका अनुवाद किया गया था.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian language, and interpreted in the Syrian language.

8 तब शासनाधिकारी रहूम और सचिव शिमशाई ने येरूशलेम के लोगों के विरुद्ध पत्र लिखा. उन्होंने राजा अर्तहषस्ता को जो लिखा वह यह था:

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

9 शासनाधिकारी रहूम, सचिव शिमशाई, तथा तर्पली, अफ़ारसी, एरेकी, बाबेली और शूशनी के एलामी लोगों के न्यायाधीश और महत्वपूर्ण अधिकारियों की ओर से,

Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

10 तथा वे अन्य लोग जिन्हें महान और शक्तिशाली ओस्नप्पर ने शमरिया के नगरों एवं परात नदी के पश्चिमी प्रदेश के अन्य स्थानों पर बसाय था.

And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side of the river, and now.

11 (यह उस पत्र कि नकल है जिसे उन लोगों ने अर्तहषस्ता को भेजा था.) महाराज अर्तहषस्ता को महाराज के दास लोग जो परात नदी के पश्चिमी प्रदेश से हैं,

this is the copy of the letter that they sent to him, even to Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side of the river, and now.

12 महाराज को यह मालूम हो, कि वे यहूदी, जो आपके द्वारा ही भेजे गए हैं, हमारे क्षेत्र येरूशलेम में आ चुके हैं. वे उस विद्रोही तथा घिनौने नगर को दोबारा बना रहे हैं. अब वे शहरपनाह को बनाकर नींव को मजबूत कर रहे हैं.

let it be known to the king, that the Jews who came from thee to us are come to Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the evil city, and have set up the walls, and joined the foundations.

13 महाराज को यह मालूम हो, कि यदि उस नगर को दोबारा बना दिया जाएगा और इसकी शहरपनाह बन गई, तब ये लोग आपको न तो कोई भेंट चढ़ाएंगे, न चुंगी देंगे और न ही कोई कर, जिससे राजकीय खजाने की बहुत हानि हो जाएगी.

Be it known now to the king, that, if this city shall be built, and the walls set up again, then they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt diminish the revenue of the kings.

14 इसलिये कि हम राजमंदिर में काम करते हैं, हम महाराज को अपमानित होते हुए नहीं देख सकते, सो हम महाराज को इसकी ख़बर दे रहे हैं,

Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not good for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and informed the king;

15 कि आप अपने पुरखों की पुस्तकों में खोज करवाएं, इन पुस्तकों के द्वारा आपको मालूम हो ही जाएगा कि यह नगर विद्रोही नगर ही रहा है, जिसने बाकी राजाओं की हानि ही की है. पुराने समय से ही यह नगर राजद्रोह फैलाता ही रहा है, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप आज यह नगर उजाड़ पड़ा हुआ है.

That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same from of old: for which cause was this city destroyed.

16 हम महाराज को यह बताने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं, कि यदि यह नगर दोबारा बन जाएगा, यदि इसकी शहरपनाह दोबारा बन जाएगी, तो नदी के उस पार के प्रदेश पर आप अपने भाग को खो देगें.

We inform the king that, if this city shall be built again, and the walls set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side of the river.

17 सो राजा ने सेनापति रहूम, शास्त्री शिमशाई तथा शमरिया में तथा नदी के पार के प्रदेश में चुने हुए उनके बाकी सहयोगियों को यह उत्तर भेजा: आप सभी का भला हो.

Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and to the rest beyond the river, Peace, and now.

18 आप सभी के द्वारा भेजे गए पत्र का अनुवाद मेरे सामने पढ़ा गया.

the letter which ye sent to us hath been plainly read before me.

19 मेरे द्वारा एक राज आज्ञा दी जा चुकी है तथा इस विषय में खोज भी की गई है; जिसके परिणामस्वरूप यह बात साफ़ हो चुकी है कि यह नगर पुराने समय से ही राजविद्रोह करता रहा है तथा इसके द्वारा दंगा और बलवा किया जाता रहा है.

And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city from of old hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it.

20 प्रतापी राजाओं ने येरूशलेम पर शासन किया है तथा उनका शासन इस नदी के पार के सभी प्रदेशों पर रहा है तथा इन्हें भेंटें, चुंगी तथा कर दिए जाते रहे हैं.

There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid to them.

21 तब अब यह आदेश ज़ारी कर दीजिए कि ये लोग इस कार्य को रोक दें तथा मेरे आदेश के बिना यह नगर दोबारा बसाने का काम न करें.

Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not built, until another commandment shall be given from me.

22 सावधान रहिए! इस आदेश के पालन में कोई भी ढिलाई न होने पाए. भला क्या लाभ होगा अगर राजाओं की हानि का खतरा बढ़ जाएगा?

Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the harm of the kings?

23 जैसे ही राजा अर्तहषस्ता के पत्र का अनुवाद रहूम तथा शास्त्री शिमशाई तथा उनके सहयोगियों के सामने पढ़ा गया, उन्होंने बिना देर किए येरूशलेम जाकर अधिकार का इस्तेमाल करते हुए ज़बरदस्ती उन यहूदियों को आगे काम करने से रोक दिया.

Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 इस प्रकार येरूशलेम में परमेश्वर के भवन का काम रुक गया-यह काम फारस के राजा दारयावेश के शासनकाल के दूसरे वर्ष तक रुका रहा.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
