सभोपदेशक 6
1 मैंने सूरज के नीचे एक बुरी बात देखी जो मनुष्य पर बहुत अधिक हावी है.
There is also another evil, which I have seen under the sun, and that frequent among men:
2 एक व्यक्ति जिसे परमेश्वर ने धन-संपत्ति और सम्मान दिया है जिससे उसे उस किसी भी वस्तु की कमी न हो जिसे उसका मन चाहता है; मगर परमेश्वर ने उसे उनको इस्तेमाल करने की समझ नहीं दी, उनका आनंद तो एक विदेशी लेता है. यह बेकार और बड़ी ही बुरी बात है.
A man to whom God hath given riches, and substance, and honour, and his soul wanteth nothing of all that he desireth: yet God doth not give him power to eat thereof, but a stranger shall eat it up. This is vanity and a great misery.
3 यदि एक व्यक्ति सौ पुत्रों का पिता है और वह बहुत साल जीवित रहता है, चाहे उसकी आयु के साल बहुत हों, पर अगर वह अपने जीवन भर में अच्छी वस्तुओं का इस्तेमाल नहीं करता और उसे क्रिया-कर्म ही नहीं किया गया तो मेरा कहना तो यही है कि एक मरा हुआ जन्मा बच्चा उस व्यक्ति से बेहतर है,
If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, and attain to a great age, and his soul make no use of the goods of his substance, and he be without burial: of this man I pronounce, that the untimely born is better than he.
4 क्योंकि वह बच्चा बेकार में आता है और अंधेरे में चला जाता है. अंधेरे में उसका नाम छिपा लिया जाता है.
For he came in vain, and goeth to darkness, and his name shall be wholly forgotten.
5 उस बच्चे ने सूरज को नहीं देखा और न ही उसे कुछ मालूम ही हुआ था. वह बच्चा उस व्यक्ति से कहीं अधिक बेहतर है.
He hath not seen the sun, nor known the distance of good and evil:
6 दो बार जिसका जीवन दो हज़ार साल का हो मगर उस व्यक्ति ने किसी अच्छी वस्तु का इस्तेमाल न किया हो, क्या सभी लोग एक ही जगह पर नहीं जाते?
Although he lived two thousand years, and hath not enjoyed good things: do not all make haste to one place?
7 मनुष्य की सारी मेहनत उसके भोजन के लिए ही होती है, मगर उसका मन कभी संतुष्ट नहीं होता.
All the labour of man is for his mouth, but his soul shall not be filled.
8 बुद्धिमान को निर्बुद्धि से क्या लाभ? और गरीब को यह मालूम होने से क्या लाभ कि उसे बुद्धिमानों के सामने कैसा व्यवहार करना है?
What hath the wise man more than the fool? and what the poor man, but to go thither, where there is life?
9 आंखों से देख लेना इच्छा रखने से कहीं अधिक बेहतर है. मगर यह भी बेकार ही है, सिर्फ हवा को पकड़ने की कोशिश.
Better it is to see what thou mayst desire, than to desire that which thou canst not know. But this also is vanity, and presumption of spirit.
10 जो हो चुका है उसका नाम भी रखा जा चुका है, और यह भी मालूम हो चुका है कि मनुष्य क्या है? मनुष्य उस व्यक्ति पर हावी नहीं हो सकता जो उससे बलवान है.
He that shall be, his name is already called: and it is known, that he is man, and cannot contend in judgment with him that is stronger than himself.
11 शब्द जितना अधिक है, अर्थ उतना कम होता है. इससे मनुष्य को क्या फायदा?
There are many words that have much vanity in disputing.
12 जिसे यह मालूम है कि उसके पूरे जीवन में मनुष्य के लिए क्या अच्छा है, अपने उस व्यर्थ जीवन के थोड़े से सालों में. वह एक परछाई के समान उन्हें बिता देगा. मनुष्य को कौन बता सकता है कि सूरज के नीचे उसके बाद क्या होगा?
What needeth a man to seek things that are above him, whereas he knoweth not what is profitable for him in his life, in all the days of his pilgrimage, and the time that passeth like a shadow? Or who can tell him what shall be after him under the sun?
