सभोपदेशक 10
1 जिस प्रकार मरी हुई मक्खियां सुगंध तेल को बदबूदार बना देती हैं, उसी प्रकार थोड़ी सी मूर्खता बुद्धि और सम्मान पर भारी पड़ती है.
Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth an offensive odor: [so doth] a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom [and] honor.
2 बुद्धिमान का हृदय तो उसे सही ओर ले जाता है, किंतु मूर्ख का हृदय उसे उस ओर जो गलत है.
A wise man's heart [is] at his right hand; but a fool's heart [is] at his left.
3 रास्ते पर चलते समय भी मूर्खों के हृदय में, समझ की कमी होती है, और सबसे उसका कहना यही होता है कि वह एक मूर्ख है.
Also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth [him], and he saith to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
4 यदि राजा का क्रोध तुम्हारे विरुद्ध भड़क गया है, तो भी तुम अपनी जगह को न छोड़ना; क्योंकि तुम्हारा धीरज उसके क्रोध को बुझा देगा.
If the spirit of the ruler riseth against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offenses.
5 सूरज के नीचे मैंने एक और बुराई देखी, जैसे इसे कोई राजा अनजाने में ही कर बैठता है.
There is an evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceedeth from the ruler:
6 वह यह कि मूर्खता ऊंचे पदों पर बैठी होती है, मगर धनी लोग निचले पदों पर ही होते हैं.
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
7 मैंने दासों को तो घोड़ों पर, लेकिन राजाओं को दासों के समान पैदल चलते हुए देखा है.
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
8 जो गड्ढा खोदता है वह खुद उसमें गिरेगा; और जो दीवार में सेंध लगाता है, सांप उसे डस लेगा.
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoever breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9 जो पत्थर खोदता है वह उन्हीं से चोटिल हो जाएगा; और जो लकड़ी फाड़ता है, वह उन्हीं से जोखिम में पड़ जाएगा.
Whoever removeth stones shall be hurt by them; [and] he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered by it.
10 यदि कुल्हाड़े की धार तेज नहीं है और तुम उसको पैना नहीं करते, तब तुम्हें अधिक मेहनत करनी पड़ेगी; लेकिन बुद्धि सफलता दिलाने में सहायक होती है.
If the iron is blunt, and he doth not whet the edge, then must he use more strength: but wisdom [is] profitable to direct.
11 और यदि सांप मंत्र पढ़ने से पहले ही डस ले तो, मंत्र पढ़ने वाले का कोई फायदा नहीं.
Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
12 बुद्धिमान की बातों में अनुग्रह होता है, जबकि मूर्खों के ओंठ ही उनके विनाश का कारण हो जाते है.
The words of a wise man's mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13 उसकी बातों की शुरुआत ही मूर्खता से होती है और उसका अंत दुखदाई पागलपन होता है.
The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
14 जबकि वह अपनी बातें बढ़ाकर भी बोलता है. यह किसी व्यक्ति को मालूम नहीं होता कि क्या होनेवाला है, और कौन उसे बता सकता है कि उसके बाद क्या होगा?
A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 मूर्ख की मेहनत उसे इतना थका देती है; कि उसे नगर का रास्ता भी पता नहीं होता.
The labor of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16 धिक्कार है उस देश पर जिसका राजा एक कम उम्र का युवक है और जिसके शासक सुबह से ही मनोरंजन में लग जाते हैं.
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17 मगर सुखी है वह देश जिसका राजा कुलीन वंश का है और जिसके शासक ताकत के लिए भोजन करते हैं, न कि मतवाले बनने के लिए.
Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 आलस से छत की कड़ियों में झोल पड़ जाते हैं; और जिस व्यक्ति के हाथों में सुस्ती होती है उसका घर टपकने लगता है.
By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
19 लोग मनोरंजन के लिए भोजन करते हैं, दाखमधु जीवन में आनंद को भर देती है, और धन से हर एक समस्या का समाधान होता है.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].
20 अपने विचारों में भी राजा को न धिक्कारना, और न ही अपने कमरे में किसी धनी व्यक्ति को शाप देना, क्योंकि हो सकता है कि आकाश का पक्षी तुम्हारी वह बात ले उड़े और कोई उड़नेवाला जंतु उन्हें इस बारे में बता देगा.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bed-chamber: for a bird of the air will carry the voice, and that which hath wings will tell the matter.
