1 महापुरोहित ने उनसे प्रश्न किया, “क्या यह आरोप सच है?”
Then the High Priest asked him, "Are these statements true?"
2 स्तेफ़ानॉस ने उसे उत्तर दिया, “आदरणीय गुरुवर और बंधुओं,” कृपया सुनिए: महामहिम परमेश्वर ने हमारे पूर्वज अब्राहाम को उनके हारान प्रदेश में आकर बसने के पूर्व, जब वह मेसोपोतामिया में थे, दिव्य दर्शन देते हुए आज्ञा दी:
The reply of Stephen was, "Sirs--brethren and fathers--listen to me. God Most Glorious appeared to our forefather Abraham when he was living in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran,
3 अपने पिता के घर तथा अपने रिश्तेदारों को छोड़कर उस देश को चला जा, जो मैं तुझे दिखाऊंगा.
and said to him, "'Leave your country and your relatives, and go into whatever land I point out to you.'
4 “इसलिये वह कसदियों के देश को छोड़कर हारान नगर में बस गए. इसके बाद उनके पिता की मृत्यु के बाद, परमेश्वर उन्हें इस भूमि पर ले आए जिस पर आप निवास कर रहे हैं. परमेश्वर ने उन्हें इस भूभाग का कोई उत्तराधिकार नहीं दिया;
"Thereupon he left Chaldaea and settled in Haran till after the death of his father, when God caused him to remove into this country where you now live.
5 यहां तक कि पैर रखने का भी स्थान नहीं. किंतु परमेश्वर ने उनके उस समय निःसंतान होने पर भी उनसे यह प्रतिज्ञा की कि उनके बाद वह उनके वंशजों को यह भूमि उनकी संपत्ति के रूप में प्रदान करेंगे.
But he gave him no inheritance in it, no, not a single square yard of ground. And yet He promised to bestow the land as a permanent possession on him and his posterity after him--and promised this at a time when Abraham was childless.
6 तब परमेश्वर ने अब्राहाम से कहा, ‘यह सच है तुम्हारे वंश के लोग पराए देश में परदेशी होकर रहेंगे, जहां उन्हें दास बना लिया जाएगा, और उन्हें चार सौ वर्ष तक दुःख देंगे.
And God declared that Abraham's posterity should for four hundred years make their home in a country not their own, and be reduced to slavery and be oppressed.
7 फिर जिस देश के वे दास होंगे, उस देश के लोगों को मैं दंड दूंगा, फिर तुम्हारे वंश के लोग वहां से बहुत धन लेकर निकलेंगे.’
"'And the nation, whichever it is, that enslaves them, I will judge,' said God; 'and afterwards they shall come out, and they shall worship Me in this place.'
8 परमेश्वर ने अब्राहाम के साथ ख़तना की वाचा स्थापित की. जब अब्राहाम के पुत्र यित्सहाक का जन्म हुआ, तो आठवें दिन उनका ख़तना किया गया. यित्सहाक के पुत्र थे याकोब और याकोब से बारह गोत्रपिता पैदा हुए.
"Then He gave him the Covenant of circumcision, and under this Covenant he became the father of Isaac--whom he circumcised on the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve Patriarchs.
9 “जलन के कारण गोत्रपिताओं ने योसेफ़ को मिस्र देश में बेच दिया किंतु परमेश्वर की कृपादृष्टि योसेफ़ पर बनी रही.
"The Patriarchs were jealous of Joseph and sold him into slavery in Egypt. But God was with him
10 इसलिये परमेश्वर ने योसेफ़ को सभी यातनाओं से मुक्त कर उन्हें बुद्धि प्रदान की और मिस्र देश के राजा फ़रोह की कृपादृष्टि प्रदान की तथा फ़रोह ने उन्हें मिस्र देश और पूरे राजमहल पर अधिकारी बना दिया.
and delivered him from all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who appointed him governor over Egypt and all the royal household.
11 “तब सारे मिस्र और कनान देश में अकाल पड़ा जिससे हर जगह हाहाकार मच गया और हमारे पूर्वजों के सामने भोजन का अभाव हो गया.
But there came a famine throughout the whole of Egypt and Canaan--and great distress--so that our forefathers could find no food.
12 किंतु जब याकोब को यह मालूम हुआ कि मिस्र देश में अन्न उपलब्ध है, उन्होंने हमारे पूर्वजों को अन्न लेने वहां भेजा, जिनकी यह पहली मिस्र की यात्रा थी.
When, however, Jacob heard that there was wheat to be had, he sent our forefathers into Egypt; that was the first time.
13 जब वे अन्न लेने वहां दूसरी बार गए, योसेफ़ ने स्वयं को अपने भाइयों पर प्रकट कर दिया, जिससे फ़रोह योसेफ़ के परिवार से परिचित हो गया.
On their second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Pharaoh was informed of Joseph's parentage.
14 तब योसेफ़ ने अपने पिता और सारे परिवार को, जिनकी संख्या पचहत्तर थी, मिस्र देश में बुला लिया.
Then Joseph sent and invited his father Jacob and all his family, numbering seventy-five persons, to come to him,
15 तब याकोब मिस्र देश में बस गए और वहीं उनकी और हमारे पूर्वजों की मृत्यु हुई.
and Jacob went down into Egypt. There he died, and so did our forefathers,
16 उनके अवशेष शेकेम नगर लाए गए तथा उन्हें अब्राहाम द्वारा मोल ली गई कंदरा-क़ब्र में रखा गया, जिसे अब्राहाम ने शेकेम नगर के निवासी हामोर के पुत्रों को दाम देकर खरीदा था.
and they were taken to Shechem and were laid in the tomb which Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a sum of money paid in silver.
17 “जब परमेश्वर द्वारा अब्राहाम से की गई प्रतिज्ञा को पूरी करने का समय आया तब मिस्र देश में हमारे पूर्वजों की संख्या में कई गुणा वृद्धि हो चुकी थी.
"But as the time drew near for the fulfilment of the promise which God had made to Abraham, the people became many times more numerous in Egypt,
18 उस समय मिस्र में एक नया राजा बना, जो योसेफ़ को नहीं जानता था.
until there arose a foreign king over Egypt who knew nothing of Joseph.
19 उसने हमारे पूर्वजों के साथ चालाकी से बुरा व्यवहार किया और नवजात शिशुओं को नाश करने के लिए विवश किया कि एक भी शिशु बचा न रहे.
He adopted a crafty policy towards our race, and oppressed our forefathers, making them cast out their infants so that they might not be permitted to live.
20 “इसी काल में मोशेह का जन्म हुआ. वह परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में चाहने योग्य थे. तीन माह तक उनका पालन पोषण उनके पिता के ही परिवार में हुआ.
At this time Moses was born--a wonderfully beautiful child; and for three months he was cared for in his father's house.
21 जब उनको छुपाए रखना असंभव हो गया, तब फ़रोह की पुत्री उन्हें ले गई. उसने उनका पालन पोषण अपने पुत्र जैसे किया.
At length he was cast out, but Pharaoh's daughter adopted him, and brought him up as her own son.
22 मिस्र देश की सारी विद्या में मोशेह को प्रशिक्षित किया गया. वह बातचीत और कर्तव्य-पालन करने में प्रभावशाली थे.
So Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and possessed great influence through his eloquence and his achievements.
23 “जब मोशेह लगभग चालीस वर्ष के हुए, उनके मन में अपने इस्राएली बंधुओं से भेंट करने का विचार आया.
"And when he was just forty years old, it occurred to him to visit his brethren the descendants of Israel.
24 वहां उन्होंने एक इस्राएली के साथ अन्याय से भरा व्यवहार होते देख उसकी रक्षा की तथा सताए जानेवाले के बदले में मिस्रवासी की हत्या कर दी.
Seeing one of them wrongfully treated he took his part, and secured justice for the ill-treated man by striking down the Egyptian.
25 उनका विचार यह था कि उनके इस काम के द्वारा इस्राएली यह समझ जाएंगे कि परमेश्वर स्वयं उन्हीं के द्वारा इस्राएलियों को मुक्त करा रहे हैं किंतु ऐसा हुआ नहीं.
He supposed his brethren to be aware that by him God was sending them deliverance; this, however, they did not understand.
26 दूसरे दिन जब उन्होंने आपस में लड़ते हुए दो इस्राएलियों के मध्य यह कहते हुए मेल-मिलाप का प्रयास किया, ‘तुम भाई-भाई हो, क्यों एक दूसरे को आहत करना चाह रहे हो?’
The next day, also, he came and found two of them fighting, and he endeavoured to make peace between them. "'Sirs,' he said, 'you are brothers. Why are you wronging one another?'
27 “उस अन्याय करनेवाले इस्राएली ने मोशेह को धक्का देते हुए कहा, ‘किसने तुम्हें हम पर राजा और न्याय करनेवाला ठहराया है?
"But the man who was doing the wrong resented his interference, and asked, "'Who appointed you magistrate and judge over us?
28 कहीं तुम्हारा मतलब कल उस मिस्री जैसे मेरी भी हत्या का तो नहीं है? बोलो!’
Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'
29 यह सुन मोशेह वहां से भाग खड़े हुए और मिदियान देश में परदेशी होकर रहने लगे. वहां उनके दो पुत्र पैदा हुए.
"Alarmed at this question, Moses fled from the country and went to live in the land of Midian. There he became the father of two sons.
30 “चालीस वर्ष व्यतीत होने पर सीनाय पर्वत के बंजर भूमि में एक जलती हुई कंटीली झाड़ी आग की लौ में उन्हें एक स्वर्गदूत दिखाई दिया.
"But at the end of forty years there appeared to him in the Desert of Mount Sinai an angel in the middle of a flame of fire in a bush.
31 इस दृश्य ने उन्हें आश्चर्यचकित कर दिया. जब वह इसे नज़दीकी से देखने के उद्देश्य से झाड़ी के पास गए तो परमेश्वर ने उनसे कहा:
When Moses saw this he wondered at the sight; but on his going up to look further, the voice of the Lord was heard, saying,
32 ‘मैं तुम्हारे पूर्वजों के पिता अर्थात् अब्राहाम, यित्सहाक तथा याकोब का परमेश्वर हूं.’ मोशेह भय से कांपने लगे और ऊपर आंख उठाने का साहस न कर सके.
"'I am the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob.' "Quaking with fear Moses did not dare gaze.
33 “प्रभु ने मोशेह से कहा, अपनी पैरों से जूते उतार दो, क्योंकि यह स्थान, जिस पर तुम खड़े हो, पवित्र है.
"'Take off your shoes,' said the Lord, 'for the spot on which you are standing is holy ground.
34 मिस्र देश में मेरी प्रजा पर हो रहा अत्याचार मैंने अच्छी तरह से देखा है. ‘मैंने उनका कराहना भी सुना है. मैं उन्हें मुक्त कराने नीचे उतर आया हूं. सुनो, मैं तुम्हें मिस्र देश भेजूंगा.’
I have seen, yes, I have seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt and have heard their groans, and I have come down to deliver them. And now I will send you to Egypt.'
35 “यह वही मोशेह हैं, जिन्हें इस्राएलियों ने यह कहते हुए अस्वीकार कर दिया था, ‘किसने तुम्हें हम पर राजा और न्याय करनेवाला ठहराया है?’ परमेश्वर ने उन्हीं को उस स्वर्गदूत द्वारा, जो झाड़ी में उन्हें दिखाई दिया था, राजा तथा छुड़ाने वाला ठहराकर भेज दिया.
"The Moses whom they rejected, asking him, 'Who appointed you magistrate and judge?' --that same Moses we find God sending as a magistrate and a deliverer by the help of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36 यह वही मोशेह थे, जिन्होंने उनका नायक होकर उन्हें बाहर निकाला और मिस्र देश, लाल सागर तथा चालीस वर्ष बंजर भूमि में अद्भुत चिह्न दिखाते हुए उनका मार्गदर्शन किया.
This was he who brought them out, after performing marvels and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the Desert for forty years.
37 “यही थे वह मोशेह, जिन्होंने इस्राएल की संतान के सामने यह घोषणा पहले से ही की थी, ‘तुम्हारे ही देशवासियों में से परमेश्वर मेरे ही समान एक भविष्यवक्ता को उठाएंगे.’
This is the Moses who said to the descendants of Israel, "'God will raise up a Prophet for you, from among your brethren, just as He raised me up.'
38 यह वही हैं, जो बंजर भूमि में इस्राएली समुदाय में उस स्वर्गदूत के साथ मौजूद थे, जिसने उनसे सीनाय पर्वत पर बातें की और जो हमारे पूर्वजों के साथ थे तथा मोशेह ने तुम्हें सौंप देने के लिए जिनसे जीवित वचन प्राप्त किए.
'This is he who was among the Congregation in the Desert, together with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and with our forefathers, who received ever-living utterances to hand on to us.
39 “हमारे पूर्वज उनके आज्ञापालन के इच्छुक नहीं थे. वे मन ही मन मिस्र देश की कामना करने लगे.
"Our forefathers, however, would not submit to him, but spurned his authority and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
40 वे हारोन से कहते रहे, ‘हमारे आगे-आगे जाने के लिए देवताओं को स्थापित करो. इस मोशेह की, जो हमें मिस्र साम्राज्य से बाहर लेकर आया है, कौन जाने क्या हुआ!’
They said to Aaron, "'Make gods for us, to march in front of us; for as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'
41 तब उन्होंने बछड़े की एक मूर्ति बनाई, उसे बलि चढ़ाई तथा अपने हाथों के कामों पर उत्सव मनाने लगे.
"Moreover they made a calf at that time, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and kept rejoicing in the gods which their own hands had made.
42 इससे परमेश्वर ने उनसे मुंह मोड़कर उन्हें आकाश के नक्षत्रों की उपासना करने के लिए छोड़ दिया, जैसा भविष्यद्वक्ताओं के अभिलेख में लिखा है: “‘हे इस्राएल के वंशजों, निर्जन प्रदेश में चालीस साल तक क्या तुमने मुझे बलिदान और भेंट चढ़ाया?
So God turned from them and gave them up to the worship of the Host of Heaven, as it is written in the Book of the Prophets, "'Were they victims and sacrifices which you offered Me, forty years in the Desert, O House of Israel?
43 तुमने देवता मोलेक की वेदी की स्थापना की, अपने देवता रेफ़ान के तारे को ऊंचा किया और उन्हीं की मूर्तियों को आराधना के लिए स्थापित किया. इसलिये मैं तुम्हें बाबेल से दूर निकाल ले जाऊंगा.’
Yes, you lifted up Moloch's tent and the Star of the God Rephan--the images which you made in order to worship them; and I will remove you beyond Babylon.'
44 “बंजर भूमि में गवाही का तंबू हमारे पूर्वजों के पास था. इसका निर्माण ठीक-ठीक परमेश्वर द्वारा मोशेह को दिए गए निर्देश के अनुसार किया गया था, जिसका आकार स्वयं मोशेह देख चुके थे.
"Our forefathers had the Tent of the Testimony in the Desert, built as He who spoke to Moses had instructed him to make it in imitation of the model which he had seen.
45 हमारे पूर्वज इस गवाही के तंबू को यहोशू के नेतृत्व में अपने साथ उस भूमि पर ले आए, जिसे उन्होंने अपने अधिकार में ले लिया था और जहां से परमेश्वर ने हमारे पूर्वजों के सामने से राष्ट्रों को निकाल दिया था. ऐसा दावीद के समय तक रहा.
That Tent was bequeathed to the next generation of our forefathers. Under Joshua they brought it with them when they were taking possession of the land of the Gentile nations, whom God drove out before them. So it continued till David's time.
46 दावीद पर परमेश्वर की कृपादृष्टि थी. दावीद ने उनसे याकोब के परमेश्वर के लिए एक निवास स्थान बनाने की आज्ञा चाही.
David obtained favour with God, and asked leave to provide a dwelling-place for the God of Jacob.
47 किंतु इस भवन का निर्माण शलोमोन द्वारा किया गया.
But it was Solomon who built a house for Him.
48 “सच तो यह है कि, परम प्रधान परमेश्वर मनुष्य के हाथ से बने भवन में वास नहीं करते. भविष्यवक्ता की घोषणा है:
Yet the Most High does not dwell in buildings erected by men's hands. But, as the Prophet declares,
49 “‘स्वर्ग मेरा सिंहासन तथा पृथ्वी मेरे पैरों की चौकी है. किस प्रकार का घर बनाओगे तुम मेरे लिए? परमेश्वर का कहना है, या कहां होगा मेरा विश्राम स्थान?
"'The sky is My throne, and earth is the footstool for My feet. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or what resting place shall I have?
50 क्या ये सभी मेरे ही हाथों की रचना नहीं?’
Did not My hand form this universe.'
51 “आप, जो हठीले हृदय और कान के ख़तना रहित लोग हैं, हमेशा पवित्र आत्मा का विरोध करते रहते हैं. आप ठीक वही कर रहे हैं, जो आपके पूर्वजों ने किया.
"O stiff-necked men, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you also are continually at strife with the Holy Spirit--just as your forefathers were.
52 क्या कभी भी कोई ऐसा भविष्यवक्ता हुआ है, जिसे आपके पूर्वजों ने सताया न हो? यहां तक कि उन्होंने तो उन भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की हत्या भी कर दी जिन्होंने उस धर्मी जन के आगमन की पहले से ही घोषणा की थी. यहां उसी की हत्या करके आप लोग विश्वासघाती और हत्यारे बन गए हैं.
Which of the Prophets did not your forefathers persecute? Yes, they killed those who announced beforehand the advent of the righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become--
53 आप वही हैं जिन्हें स्वर्गदूतों द्वारा प्रभावशाली व्यवस्था सौंपी गई थी, फिर भी आपने उसका पालन नहीं किया.”
you who received the Law given through angels, and yet have not obeyed it."
54 यह सुन सारे सुननेवाले तिलमिला उठे और स्तेफ़ानॉस पर दांत पीसने लगे.
As they listened to these words, they became infuriated and gnashed their teeth at him.
55 किंतु पवित्र आत्मा से भरकर स्तेफ़ानॉस ने जब अपनी दृष्टि स्वर्ग की ओर उठाई, उन्होंने परमेश्वर की महिमा को और मसीह येशु को परमेश्वर के दाहिनी ओर खड़े हुए देखा.
But, full of the Holy Spirit and looking up to Heaven, Stephen saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand.
56 स्तेफ़ानॉस ने सुननेवालों को संबोधित करते हुए कहा, “वह देखिए! मुझे स्वर्ग खुला हुआ तथा मनुष्य का पुत्र परमेश्वर के दाहिनी ओर खड़े हुए दिखाई दे रहे हैं.”
"I can see Heaven wide open," he said, "and the Son of Man standing at God's right hand."
57 यह सुनते ही सुननेवालों ने चीखते हुए अपने कानों पर हाथ रख लिए. फिर वे गुस्से में स्तेफ़ानॉस पर एक साथ टूट पड़े.
Upon this, with a loud outcry they stopped their ears, rushed upon Stephen in a body,
58 उन्होंने स्तेफ़ानॉस को पकड़ा और घसीटते हुए नगर के बाहर ले गए और वहां उन्होंने पथराव करके उनकी हत्या कर दी. इस समय उन्होंने अपने बाहरी कपड़े शाऊल नामक युवक के पास रख छोड़े थे.
dragged him out of the city, and stoned him, the witnesses throwing off their outer garments and giving them into the care of a young man called Saul.
59 जब वे स्तेफ़ानॉस का पथराव कर रहे थे, स्तेफ़ानॉस ने प्रभु से इस प्रकार प्रार्थना की, “प्रभु येशु, मेरी आत्मा को स्वीकार कीजिए.”
So they stoned Stephen, while he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
60 तब उन्होंने घुटने टेककर ऊंचे शब्द में यह कहा, “प्रभु, इन्हें इस पाप का दोषी न ठहराना.” यह कहते हुए स्तेफ़ानॉस लंबी नींद में सो गए.
Then, rising on his knees, he cried aloud, "Lord, do not reckon this sin against them." And with these words he fell asleep.
