1 अम्मोन के वंशजों के राजा नाहाश की मृत्यु के बाद उसका पुत्र उसके स्थान पर राजा हो गया.
And it comes to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dies, and his son reigns in his stead,
2 दावीद ने सोचा, “मैं नाहाश के पुत्र हानून पर अपनी दया बनाकर रखूंगा, क्योंकि उसका पिता मुझ पर कृपालु था,” इसलिये दावीद ने उसे उसके पिता की मृत्यु के संबंध में सांत्वना देने के लिए अपने दूत भेजे. दावीद के दूत अम्मोन के वंशजों के नगर में राजा हानून को सांत्वना देने पहुंचे,
and David says, “I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did kindness with me”; and David sends messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come to the land of the sons of Ammon, to Hanun, to comfort him,
3 किंतु अम्मोन के वंशजों के शासकों ने हानून से कहा, “क्या आप वास्तव में यह मानते हैं कि इन दूतों को आपको सांत्वना देने के लिए भेजते हुए दावीद ने आपके पिता का सम्मान करने का विचार किया है? ज़रा सोचिए, क्या उसके ये सेवक आपके पास जासूसी करके नाश करने के लक्ष्य से हमारे देश का भेद लेने तो नहीं आए हैं?”
and the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, “Is David honoring your father in your eyes because he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?”
4 तब हानून ने दावीद के सेवकों को पकड़कर उनके बाल और दाढ़ी मूंड दी और उनके वस्त्रों को बीच में नितम्बों तक काट दिया और उन्हें लौट जाने दिया.
And Hanun takes the servants of David and shaves them, and cuts their long robes in the midst, to the buttocks, and sends them away.
5 कुछ लोगों ने जाकर इसकी सूचना दावीद को दे दी. राजा ने कुछ दूतों को उस सुझाव के साथ बुलवा लिया, “आकर येरीख़ो में उस समय तक ठहरे रहना जब तक तुम्हारी दाढ़ी बढ़ न जाए. तब तुम यहां लौट सकते हो,” क्योंकि वे इस समय बहुत ही शर्म महसूस कर रहे थे.
And [some] go and declare to David concerning the men, and he sends to meet them—for the men have been greatly ashamed—and the king says, “Dwell in Jericho until your beard is grown, then you have returned.”
6 जब अम्मोन के वंशजों ने यह पाया कि उन्होंने स्वयं को दावीद के सामने बहुत ही घृणित बना लिया है, हानून और अम्मोन के वंशजों ने लगभग पैंतीस हज़ार किलो चांदी देकर मेसोपोतामिया, आराम-माकाह और ज़ोबाह से घुड़सवार और रथ किराये पर ले लिए.
And the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send one thousand talents of silver, to hire for themselves, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen;
7 इसके द्वारा उन्होंने 32,000 रथ किराये पर ले लिए. माकाह के राजा ने अपने सैनिकों के साथ आकर मेदेबा में शिविर डाल दिए. अम्मोन के वंशजों ने अपने नगरों से इकट्ठा होकर युद्ध के लिए मोर्चा बांधा.
and they hire for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come to the battle.
8 जब दावीद को इसका समाचार प्राप्त हुआ, उन्होंने योआब के साथ वीर योद्धाओं की सारी सेना वहां भेज दी.
And David hears, and sends Joab, and all the host of the mighty men,
9 अम्मोनियों ने आकर नगर फाटक पर मोर्चा बना लिया. जो राजा इस युद्ध में मिले हुए थे, वे इनसे अलग मैदान में ही ठहरे हुए थे.
and the sons of Ammon come out and set in array [for] battle at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come [are] by themselves in the field.
10 जब योआब ने यह देखा कि उनके विरुद्ध युद्ध छिड़ चुका है—सामने से और पीछे से भी, उन्होंने इस्राएल के सर्वोत्तम योद्धा अलग किए और उन्हें अरामियों का सामना करने के लिए चुन दिया.
And Joab sees that the front of the battle has been to him, before and behind, and he chooses out of all the choice in Israel, and sets in array to meet Aram,
11 शेष सैनिकों को योआब ने अपने भाई अबीशाई के नेतृत्व में छोड़ दिया कि वे अम्मोनियों का सामना करें.
and he has given the remnant of the people into the hand of his brother Abishai, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon.
12 योआब का आदेश था, “यदि तुम्हें यह लगे कि अरामी मुझ पर हावी हो रहे हैं, तब तुम मेरी रक्षा के लिए आ जाना, मगर यदि अम्मोनी तुम पर प्रबल होने लगे, तब मैं तुम्हारी रक्षा के लिए आ जाऊंगा.
And he says, “If Aram is stronger than me, then you have been for salvation to me; and if the sons of Ammon are stronger than you, then I have saved you;
13 साहस बनाए रखो. हम अपने परमेश्वर के नगरों के लिए और अपने देशवासियों के लिए साहस का प्रदर्शन करें, कि याहवेह वह कर सकें, जो उनकी दृष्टि में सही है.”
be strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and YHWH does that which is good in His eyes.”
14 योआब और उनके साथ के सैनिकों ने अश्शूरियों पर हमला किया और अरामी उनके सामने से भाग खड़े हुए.
And Joab draws near, and the people who [are] with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face;
15 जब अम्मोनियों ने यह देखा कि अरामी मैदान छोड़कर भाग रहे हैं, वे भी योआब के भाई अबीशाई के सामने से भागने लगे और नगर के भीतर जा छिपे. योआब येरूशलेम लौट गया.
and the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram has fled, and they flee—they also—from the face of his brother Abishai, and go into the city. And Joab comes to Jerusalem.
16 जब अश्शूरियों ने यह देखा कि उन्हें इस्राएल से हार का सामना करना पड़ा है, तब उन्होंने दूत भेजकर फरात नदी के पार से और भी सेना की विनती की. हादेदेज़र की इस सेना का प्रधान था शोफख.
And Aram sees that they have been struck before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that [is] beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer [is] before them.
17 जब दावीद को इसकी सूचना दी गई, वह सारी इस्राएली सेना को इकट्ठा कर यरदन के पार चले गए और उन्होंने अरामी सेना के विरुद्ध मोर्चा बांधा. दोनों में युद्ध छिड़ गया.
And it is declared to David, and he gathers all Israel, and passes over the Jordan, and comes to them, and sets in array against them; indeed, David sets in array [for] battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him;
18 अरामी इस्राएलियों के सामने पीठ दिखाकर भागने लगे. दावीद ने अरामी सेना के 700 रथ सैनिक, 40,000 घुड़सवार मार गिराए और उनकी सेना के आदेशक शोफख का वध कर दिया.
and Aram flees from the face of Israel, and David slays seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand footmen of Aram, and he has put Shophach head of the host to death.
19 जब हादेदेज़र के अधीन सभी जागीरदारों ने यह देखा कि वे इस्राएल द्वारा हरा दिया गया है, उन्होंने दावीद से संधि कर ली और उनके अधीन हो गए. अब अरामी अम्मोन-वंशजो की सहायता के लिए तैयार न थे.
And the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been struck before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram has not been willing to help the sons of Ammon anymore.
