מִשְׁלֵי 1
| משלי שלמה בן דוד מלך ישראל׃ | 1 |
The proverbs of Solomon [Peaceable, Recompense], the son of David [Beloved], king of Israel [God prevails]:
| לדעת חכמה ומוסר להבין אמרי בינה׃ | 2 |
to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;
| לקחת מוסר השכל צדק ומשפט ומישרים׃ | 3 |
to receive instruction in wisdom, in righteousness, mishpat ·justice·, and equity;
| לתת לפתאים ערמה לנער דעת ומזמה׃ | 4 |
to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man:
| ישמע חכם ויוסף לקח ונבון תחבלות יקנה׃ | 5 |
that the wise man may sh'ma ·hear obey·, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:
| להבין משל ומליצה דברי חכמים וחידתם׃ | 6 |
to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.
| יראת יהוה ראשית דעת חכמה ומוסר אוילים בזו׃ | 7 |
The fear of Adonai is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
| שמע בני מוסר אביך ואל תטש תורת אמך׃ | 8 |
My son, sh'ma ·hear obey· your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching:
| כי לוית חן הם לראשך וענקים לגרגרתיך׃ | 9 |
for they will be a garland to chen ·grace· your head, and chains around your neck.
| בני אם יפתוך חטאים אל תבא׃ | 10 |
My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.
| אם יאמרו לכה אתנו נארבה לדם נצפנה לנקי חנם׃ | 11 |
If they say, “Come with us, Let’s lay in wait for blood; let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
| נבלעם כשאול חיים ותמימים כיורדי בור׃ (Sheol h7585) | 12 |
let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol ·Place of the dead·, and whole, like those who go down into the pit (of Abbadon, the unrighteous side of Sheol). (Sheol h7585)
| כל הון יקר נמצא נמלא בתינו שלל׃ | 13 |
We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.
| גורלך תפיל בתוכנו כיס אחד יהיה לכלנו׃ | 14 |
You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.”
| בני אל תלך בדרך אתם מנע רגלך מנתיבתם׃ | 15 |
My son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path,
| כי רגליהם לרע ירוצו וימהרו לשפך דם׃ | 16 |
for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.
| כי חנם מזרה הרשת בעיני כל בעל כנף׃ | 17 |
For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird:
| והם לדמם יארבו יצפנו לנפשתם׃ | 18 |
but these lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.
| כן ארחות כל בצע בצע את נפש בעליו יקח׃ | 19 |
So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.
| חכמות בחוץ תרנה ברחבות תתן קולה׃ | 20 |
Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.
| בראש המיות תקרא בפתחי שערים בעיר אמריה תאמר׃ | 21 |
She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:
| עד מתי פתים תאהבו פתי ולצים לצון חמדו להם וכסילים ישנאו דעת׃ | 22 |
“How long, you simple ones, will you 'ahav ·affectionately love· thoughtless living? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?
| תשובו לתוכחתי הנה אביעה לכם רוחי אודיעה דברי אתכם׃ | 23 |
Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.
| יען קראתי ותמאנו נטיתי ידי ואין מקשיב׃ | 24 |
Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;
| ותפרעו כל עצתי ותוכחתי לא אביתם׃ | 25 |
but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;
| גם אני באידכם אשחק אלעג בבא פחדכם׃ | 26 |
I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you;
| בבא כשאוה פחדכם ואידכם כסופה יאתה בבא עליכם צרה וצוקה׃ | 27 |
when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you.
| אז יקראנני ולא אענה ישחרנני ולא ימצאנני׃ | 28 |
Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;
| תחת כי שנאו דעת ויראת יהוה לא בחרו׃ | 29 |
because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Adonai.
| לא אבו לעצתי נאצו כל תוכחתי׃ | 30 |
They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.
| ויאכלו מפרי דרכם וממעצתיהם ישבעו׃ | 31 |
Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.
| כי משובת פתים תהרגם ושלות כסילים תאבדם׃ | 32 |
For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.
| ושמע לי ישכן בטח ושאנן מפחד רעה׃ | 33 |
But whoever sh'ma ·hears obeys· me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
