| בראשית היה הדבר והדבר היה את האלהים ואלהים היה הדבר׃ | 1 |
Originally, was, the Word, and, the Word, was, with God; and, the Word, was, God.
| הוא היה בראשית אצל האלהים׃ | 2 |
The same, was originally, with God.
| הכל נהיה על ידו ומבלעדיו לא נהיה כל אשר נהיה׃ | 3 |
All things, through him, came into existence, and, without him, came into existence, not even one thing: that which hath come into existence,
| בו היו חיים והחיים היו אור בני האדם׃ | 4 |
in him, was, life, and, the life, was, the light of men.—
| והאור בחשך זרח והחשך לא השיגו׃ | 5 |
And, the light, in the darkness, shineth; and, the darkness, thereof, laid not hold.
| ויהי איש שלוח מאת האלהים ושמו יוחנן׃ | 6 |
There arose a man, sent from God, whose name was, John:
| הוא בא לעדות להעיד על האור למען יאמינו כלם על ידו׃ | 7 |
The same, came, for a witness, That he might bear witness, concerning the light, that, all, might believe, through him.
| הוא לא היה האור כי אם להעיד על האור׃ | 8 |
He, was not the light, —but, that he might bear witness concerning the light,
| האור האמתי המאיר לכל אדם היה בא אל העולם׃ | 9 |
It, was—The real light that enlighteneth every man—Coming into the world.
| בעולם היה ועל ידו נהיה העולם והעולם לא הכירו׃ | 10 |
In the world, he was, and, the world, through him, came into existence, and, the world, knew him not.
| הוא בא אל אשר לו ואשר המה לו לא קבלהו׃ | 11 |
Into his own possessions, he came, and, his own people, received him not home.
| והמקבלים אתו נתן עז למו להיות בנים לאלהים המאמינים בשמו׃ | 12 |
But, as many as did receive him, he gave, unto them, authority, children of God, to become, —unto them who were believing on his name:
| אשר לא מדם ולא מחפץ הבשר אף לא מחפץ גבר כי אם מאלהים נולדו׃ | 13 |
Who—not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but—of God, were born.
| והדבר נהיה בשר וישכן בתוכנו ונחזה תפארתו כתפארת בן יחיד לאביו רב חסד ואמת׃ | 14 |
And, the Word, became, flesh, and pitched his tent among us, and we gazed upon his glory, —a glory, as an Only-begotten from his Father. Full of favour and truth.
| ויוחנן מעיד עליו ויקרא לאמר הנה זה הוא אשר אמרתי עליו הבא אחרי היה לפני כי קדם לי היה׃ | 15 |
(John beareth witness concerning him, and hath cried aloud, saying—the same, was he that said—He who, after me, was coming, before me, hath advanced; because, my Chief, was he.)
| וממלואו לקחנו כלנו חסד על חסד׃ | 16 |
Because, out of his fulness, we all, received, even favour over against favour.
| כי התורה נתנה ביד משה והחסד והאמת באו על ידי ישוע המשיח׃ | 17 |
Because, the law, through Moses, was given, favour and truth, through Jesus Christ, came into existence.
| את האלהים לא ראה איש מעולם הבן היחיד אשר בחיק האב הוא הודיע׃ | 18 |
No one, hath seen, God, at any time: An Only Begotten God, The One existing within the bosom of the Father, He, hath interpreted [him].
| וזאת היא עדות יוחנן בשלח היהודים מירושלים כהנים ולוים לשאל אתו מי אתה׃ | 19 |
And, this, is the witness of John, when the Jews sent forth unto him, out of Jerusalem, priests and Levites, —that they might question him—Who art, thou?
| ויודה ולא כחש ויודה לאמר אני אינני המשיח׃ | 20 |
and he confessed, and did not deny, —and he confessed—I, am not, the Christ;
| וישאלו אתו מי אפוא אתה האתה אליהו ויאמר אינני האתה הנביא ויען לא׃ | 21 |
and they questioned him—What then? Art, thou, Elijah? and he saith—I am not; The prophet, art, thou? and he answered—No!
| ויאמרו אליו מי זה אתה למען נשיב לשלחינו דבר מה תאמר עליך׃ | 22 |
So they said unto him—Who, art thou? that, an answer, we may give, unto them who sent us, —What sayest thou, concerning thyself?
| ויאמר אני קול קורא במדבר פנו דרך יהוה כאשר דבר ישעיהו הנביא׃ | 23 |
He said—I, am a Voice, of one crying aloud; —In the desert, make ye straight, the way of the Lord: according as said Isaiah the prophet.
| והמשלחים היו מן הפרושים׃ | 24 |
And they had been sent forth from among the Pharisees;
| וישאלהו ויאמרו אליו מדוע אפוא מטביל אתה אם אינך המשיח או אליה או הנביא׃ | 25 |
and they questioned him, and said unto him—Why, then, dost thou immerse, —if, thou, art not, the Christ, nor Elijah, nor, the Prophet?
| ויען אתם יוחנן ויאמר אנכי מטביל במים ובתוככם עומד אשר לא ידעתם אתו׃ | 26 |
John answered them, saying—I, immerse, in water. In the midst of you, standeth one, whom, ye, know not; —
| הוא הבא אחרי אשר היה לפני ואני נקלתי מהתיר שרוך נעליו׃ | 27 |
after me, coming: —Of whom, I, am not worthy that I should unloose the thong of the sandal.
| זאת היתה בבית עברה מעבר לירדן מקום אשר יוחנן מטביל שם׃ | 28 |
These things, in Bethany, came to pass, beyond the Jordan, where John was, immersing.
| ויהי ממחרת וירא יוחנן את ישוע בא אליו ויאמר הנה שה האלהים הנשא חטאת העולם׃ | 29 |
On the morrow, he beholdeth Jesus, coming unto him, and saith—See! the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world.
| זה הוא אשר אמרתי עליו אחרי יבא איש אשר היה לפני כי קדם לי היה׃ | 30 |
This, is he, of whom, I, said—After me, cometh a man, who, before me, hath advanced, because, my Chief, was he.
| ואני לא ידעתיו כי אם בעבור יגלה בישראל באתי אני לטבל במים׃ | 31 |
And, I, knew him not, but, that he might be manifested unto Israel, therefore, came, I, in water, immersing.
| ויעד יוחנן ויאמר חזיתי הרוח כדמות יונה ירדת משמים ותנח עליו׃ | 32 |
And John bare witness, saying—I have gazed upon the Spirit, descending like a dove, out of heaven, —and it abode upon him.
| ואני לא ידעתיו אולם השלח אתי לטבל במים הוא אמר אלי את אשר תראה הרוח ירדת ונחה עליו הנה זה הוא אשר יטבל ברוח הקדש׃ | 33 |
And, I, knew him not, —but, he that sent me to immerse in water, he, unto me, said—Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding upon him, the same, is he that immerseth in Holy Spirit.
| ואני ראיתי ואעידה כי זה הוא בן האלהים׃ | 34 |
I, therefore, have seen, and borne witness—That, this, is, the, Son of God.
| ויהי ממחרת ויסף יוחנן ויעמד ושנים מתלמידיו עמו׃ | 35 |
On the morrow, again, was John standing, and, from among his disciples, two;
| ויבט אל ישוע והוא מתהלך ויאמר הנה שה האלהים׃ | 36 |
and, looking at Jesus walking, he saith—See! the Lamb of God!
| ושני תלמידיו שמעו את דברו וילכו אחרי ישוע׃ | 37 |
and the two disciples hearkened unto him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
| ויפן ישוע אחריו וירא אתם הלכים אחריו ויאמר אליהם מה תבקשו ויאמרו אליו רבי פרושו מורי איפה תלין׃ | 38 |
But Jesus, turning, and looking at them following, saith unto them—What seek ye? And, they, said unto him—Rabbi! which meaneth, when translated, Teacher, Where abidest thou?
| ויאמר אליהם באו וראו ויבאו ויראו את מקום מלונו וישבו עמו ביום ההוא והעת כשעה העשירית׃ | 39 |
He saith unto them—Be coming, and ye shall see. They came, therefore, and saw where he abode, and, with him, they abode that day. It was about the tenth, hour.
| ואחד מן השנים אשר שמעו מאת יוחנן והלכו אחריו הוא אנדרי אחי שמעון פטרוס׃ | 40 |
One of the two that heard from John and followed him, was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.
| הוא פגש בראשונה את שמעון אחיו ויאמר אליו את המשיח מצאנו אשר תרגומו כריסטוס׃ | 41 |
The same findeth, first, his own brother Simon, and saith unto him—We have found the Messiah! which is, when translated, Anointed.
| ויוליכהו אל ישוע ויהי כהביט אליו ישוע ויאמר שמעון בן יונה לך יקרא כיפא אשר תרגומו פטרוס׃ | 42 |
He led him unto Jesus. Jesus, looking at him, said—Thou, art Simon, the son of John, —thou, shalt be called, Cephas; which is to be translated, Peter.
| ויהי ממחרת ויואל ישוע לצאת הגלילה וימצא את פילפוס ויאמר אליו לך אחרי׃ | 43 |
On the morrow, he desired to go forth into Galilee. And Jesus findeth Philip, and saith unto him—Be following me!
| ופילפוס היה מבית צידה עיר אנדרי ופטרוס׃ | 44 |
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
| ויפגע פילפוס את נתנאל ויאמר אליו מצאנו אתו אשר כתב משה בספר התורה והנביאים את ישוע בן יוסף מנצרת׃ | 45 |
Philip, findeth, Nathanael, and saith unto him—Him, of whom wrote Moses in the law, and the Prophets, have we found.—Jesus, son of Joseph, him from Nazareth!
| ויאמר אליו נתנאל המנצרת תצא לנו טובה ויאמר אליו בא וראה׃ | 46 |
And Nathanael said unto him—Out of Nazareth, can any good thing come? Philip saith unto him—Come, and see!
| וירא ישוע את נתנאל בא לקראתו ויאמר עליו הנה באמת בן ישראל אשר אין בו רמיה׃ | 47 |
Jesus saw Nathanael coming unto him, and saith concerning him—See! Truly, an Israelite, in whom is no guile.
| ויאמר אליו נתנאל מאין ידעתני ויען ישוע ויאמר לו בטרם קרא לך פילפוס בהיותך תחת התאנה אנכי ראיתיך׃ | 48 |
Nathanael saith unto him—Whence, dost thou, know, me? Jesus answered, and said unto him—Before Philip called thee, —when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee.
| ויען נתנאל ויאמר אליו רבי אתה בן אלהים אתה הוא מלך ישראל׃ | 49 |
Nathanael answered him—Rabbi! thou, art, the Son of God: Thou, art, King, of Israel.
| ויען ישוע ויאמר אליו על אמרי לך כי תחת התאנה ראיתיך האמנת הנה גדלות מאלה תראה׃ | 50 |
Jesus answered, and said unto him—Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, believest thou? A greater thing than these, shalt thou see!
| ויאמר אליו אמן אמן אני אמר לכם מעתה תראו השמים נפתחים ומלאכי אלהים עלים וירדים על בן אלהים׃ | 51 |
And he saith unto him—Verily, verily, I say unto you: Ye shall see heaven—when set open, and, the messengers of God, ascending and descending unto the Son of Man.
