מַעֲשֵׂי הַשְּׁלִיחִים 7
| ויאמר הכהן הגדול האמת הוא אשר דברו׃ | 1 |
The high priest said, "Are these things so?"
| ויען ויאמר אנשים אחים ואבות שמעו אלהי הכבוד נראה אל אברהם אבינו בהיותו בארם נהרים לפני שבתו בחרן׃ | 2 |
He said, "Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
| ויאמר אליו לך לך מארצך וממולדתך ובא אל הארץ אשר אראך׃ | 3 |
and said to him, 'Go out from your land and from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.'
| ויצא מארץ כשדים וישב בחרן ואחרי מות אביו העביר אתו משם אל הארץ הזאת אשר אתם ישבים בה עתה׃ | 4 |
Then he came out of the land of the Kasdim, and lived in Haran. From there, after his father died, he moved him into this land, where you are now living.
| ולא נתן לו נחלה בה אף לא מדרך כף רגל ויבטח לתתה לאחזה לו ולזרעו אחריו ועוד לא היה לו בן׃ | 5 |
He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him, when he still had no child.
| ויאמר לו אלהים כי גר יהיה זרעו בארץ לא להם ועבדום וענו אתם ארבע מאות שנה׃ | 6 |
But God spoke in this way, 'His descendants will live as strangers in a foreign land, and that they will be slaves and mistreated, for four hundred years.
| וגם את הגוי אשר יעבדו דן אנכי אמר אלהים ואחרי כן יצאו ויעבדוני במקום הזה׃ | 7 |
But I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,' said God, 'and after that will they come out, and serve me in this place.'
| ויתן לו את ברית המילה ובכן הוליד את יצחק וימל אתו ביום השמיני ויצחק הוליד את יעקב ויעקב הוליד את שנים עשר האבות׃ | 8 |
He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
| ויקנאו האבות ביוסף וימכרו אותו מצרימה ואלהים היה עמו׃ | 9 |
"The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt; and God was with him,
| ויצילהו מכל צרותיו ויתן לו חן וחכמה לפני פרעה מלך מצרים וישימהו שליט על מצרים ועל כל ביתו׃ | 10 |
and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
| ויהי רעב על כל ארץ מצרים וכנען וצרה גדולה ואבותינו לא מצאו אכל׃ | 11 |
Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers found no food.
| וישמע יעקב כי יש שבר במצרים וישלח שמה את אבותינו בפעם הראשונה׃ | 12 |
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.
| ובפעם השנית התודע יוסף אל אחיו ומולדת יוסף נגלתה לפרעה׃ | 13 |
On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.
| וישלח יוסף ויקרא ליעקב אביו ולכל משפחתו בשבעים וחמש נפש׃ | 14 |
Then Joseph sent, and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.
| וירד יעקב מצרימה וימת הוא ואבותינו׃ | 15 |
Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, himself and our fathers,
| ויובאו שכמה ויושמו בקבר אשר קנה אברהם בכספו מיד בני חמור אבי שכם׃ | 16 |
and they were brought back to Shechem, and placed in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor in Shechem.
| ויהי כאשר קרבה עת ההבטחה אשר נשבע אלהים לאברהם ויגדל העם וירב במצרים׃ | 17 |
"But as the time of the promise came close which God had made to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
| עד כי קם מלך אחר אשר לא ידע את יוסף׃ | 18 |
until 'there arose a different king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.'
| וזה התחכם למשפחתנו וירע לאבותינו ויצו אתם להשליך את עלליהם אל פני השדה לבלתי החיותם׃ | 19 |
The same took advantage of our race, and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to throw out their babies, so that they would not stay alive.
| בעת ההיא נולד משה ויהי טוב לאלהים ויהי אמון בבית אביו שלשה ירחים׃ | 20 |
At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome. He was nourished three months in his father's house.
| וכאשר השלך אספה אתו בת פרעה ותגדלהו לה לבן׃ | 21 |
When he was thrown out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and reared him as her own son.
| וילמד משה בכל חכמת מצרים ויהי גבור בדברים ובמעשים׃ | 22 |
Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.
| ובמלאת לו ארבעים שנה עלה על לבו לפקד את אחיו בני ישראל׃ | 23 |
But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
| וירא איש אחד מעשק חנם ויושע לו ויקם נקמת המכה בהכותו את המצרי׃ | 24 |
Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.
| ויחשב בלבבו כי יבינו אחיו אשר על ידו יתן האלהים להם תשועה והם לא הבינו׃ | 25 |
He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they did not understand.
| ויהי ביום השני ויבא בתוכם והם נצים ויבקש לעשות שלום ביניהם לאמר אנשים אחים אתם ולמה תעשקו איש את אחיו׃ | 26 |
"The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?'
| והעשק את רעהו הדפו לאמר מי שמך לאיש שר ושפט עלינו׃ | 27 |
But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
| הלהרגני אתה אמר כאשר הרגת אתמל את המצרי׃ | 28 |
Do you want to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'
| ויברח משה על הדבר הזה ויהי גר בארץ מדין ויולד שם שני בנים׃ | 29 |
Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
| ובמלאת ארבעים שנה נראה אליו מלאך יהוה במדבר הר סיני בלבת אש מתוך הסנה׃ | 30 |
"When forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
| וירא משה ויתמה על המראה ובסורו לראות ויהי קול יהוה אליו׃ | 31 |
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, a voice of the Lord came,
| אנכי אלהי אבותיך אלהי אברהם אלהי יצחק ואלהי יעקב ויחרד משה ויירא מהביט׃ | 32 |
'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob.' Moses trembled, and dared not look.
| ויאמר אליו יהוה של נעליך מעל רגליך כי המקום אשר אתה עומד עליו אדמת קדש הוא׃ | 33 |
The Lord said to him, 'Take your sandals off of your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
| ראה ראיתי את עני עמי אשר במצרים ואת נאקתם שמעתי וארד להצילם ועתה לכה ואשלחך מצרימה׃ | 34 |
I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.'
| הוא משה אשר כחשו בו לאמר מי שמך לשר ושפט אתו שלח האלהים לשר וגאל ביד המלאך הנראה אליו בסנה׃ | 35 |
"This Moses, whom they refused, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?'—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
| והוא הוציאם ויעש אתות ומפתים בארץ מצרים ובים סוף ובמדבר ארבעים שנה׃ | 36 |
This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.
| הוא משה אשר אמר אל בני ישראל נביא מקרב אחיכם כמני יקים לכם יהוה אלהיכם אליו תשמעון׃ | 37 |
This is that Moses, who said to the children of Israel, 'God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.'
| הוא אשר היה בקהל במדבר עם המלאך הדבר אליו בהר סיני ועם אבותינו ואשר קבל דברים חיים לתת לנו׃ | 38 |
This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received words of life to give to us,
| הוא אשר אבותינו לא אבו לשמע לו כי אם מאסו אתו ולבבם פנה מצרימה׃ | 39 |
to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
| ויאמרו אל אהרן עשה לנו אלהים אשר ילכו לפנינו כי זה משה אשר העלנו מארץ מצרים לא ידענו מה היה לו׃ | 40 |
saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'
| ויעשו עגל בימים ההם ויזבחו זבחים לאליל וישמחו במעשה ידיהם׃ | 41 |
They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
| ויפן מהם האלהים ויתנם לעבד את צבא השמים כאשר כתוב בספר הנביאים הזבחים ומנחה הגשתם לי במדבר ארבעים שנה בית ישראל׃ | 42 |
But God turned, and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets, 'Did you offer to me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
| ונשאתם את סכת מלכם ואת כוכב אלהיכם רמפן הצלמים אשר עשיתם להשתחות להם והגליתי אתכם מהלאה לבבל׃ | 43 |
You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship them. Therefore I will exile you beyond Babylon.'
| משכן העדות היה לאבותינו במדבר כאשר צוה המדבר אל משה לעשות אתו כתבנית אשר ראה׃ | 44 |
"Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;
| ואבותינו לקחהו וגם הביאהו אתם הם ויהושע ברשתם את ארצות הגוים אשר גרש אתם אלהים מפני אבותינו עד ימי דוד׃ | 45 |
which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, to the days of David,
| והוא מצא חן בעיני אלהים וישאל למצא משכנות לאלהי יעקב׃ | 46 |
who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
| ושלמה בנה לו בית׃ | 47 |
But Solomon built him a house.
| אבל העליון לא ישכן בהיכלות מעשי ידים כאשר אמר הנביא׃ | 48 |
However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,
| השמים כסאי והארץ הדם רגלי אי זה בית אשר תבנו לי אמר יהוה ואי זה מקום מנוחתי׃ | 49 |
'Heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?' says the Lord; 'or what is the place of my rest?
| הלא את כל אלה ידי עשתה׃ | 50 |
Did not my hand make all these things?'
| קשי ערף וערלי לב ואזנים ממרים הייתם תמיד ברוח הקדש כאבותיכם גם אתם׃ | 51 |
"You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so you do.
| מי מהנביאים אשר לא רדפוהו אבותיכם אף המיתו את המבשרים מקדם ביאת הצדיק אשר עתה הייתם אתם מוסריו ומרצחיו׃ | 52 |
Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.
| אתם אשר קבלתם את התורה על ידי מלאכות המלאכים ולא שמרתם אותה׃ | 53 |
You received the Law as it was ordained by angels, and did not keep it."
| ויהי כשמעם את אלה התרגזו בלבבם ויחרקו עליו שניהם׃ | 54 |
Now when they heard these things, they were furious, and they ground their teeth at him.
| והוא מלא רוח הקדש ויבט השמימה וירא את כבוד אלהים ואת ישוע נצב לימין האלהים׃ | 55 |
But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.
| ויאמר הנני ראה את השמים נפתחים ואת בן האדם נצב לימין האלהים׃ | 56 |
And he said, "Look, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."
| ויצעקו בקול גדול ויאטמו את אזניהם ויתנפלו עליו כלם יחד׃ | 57 |
But they shouted out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed at him with one accord.
| וידחפהו חוצה לעיר ויסקלו אתו באבנים והעדים פשטו את בגדיהם לרגלי בחור אחד ושמו שאול׃ | 58 |
They threw him out of the city, and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
| ויסקלו את אסטפנוס והוא משוע ואמר אדני ישוע קבל את רוחי׃ | 59 |
They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
| ויכרע על ברכיו ויצעק בקול גדול יהוה אל תשמר להם את החטא הזה ויהי אחרי דברו כדבר הזה ויישן׃ | 60 |
He kneeled down, and shouted out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
