מַעֲשֵׂי הַשְּׁלִיחִים 10
| ואיש היה בקסרין ושמו קרניליוס שר מאה מן הגדוד הנקרא האיטלקי׃ | 1 |
Now there was a certain man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,
| והוא חסיד וירא אלהים עם כל בני ביתו ועשה צדקות הרבה לעם ומתפלל תמיד לאלהים׃ | 2 |
devout and fearing God with all his household, both giving alms generously to the people and praying to God about everything.
| ומחזה נראה אליו כשעה התשיעית ליום וירא מלאך אלהים בא אליו פנימה ואמר קרניליוס׃ | 3 |
About the ninth hour of the day, in a vision, he saw clearly an angel of God entering his presence and saying to him, “Cornelius!”
| ויבט אליו ויירא ויאמר מה זה אדני ויאמר אליו תפלותיך וצדקותיך עלו לזכרון לפני האלהים׃ | 4 |
Well, staring at him and being frightened he said, “What is it, Lord?” So he said to him: “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.
| ועתה שלח לך אנשים אל יפו והבא אליך את שמעון המכנה פטרוס׃ | 5 |
Now send men to Joppa and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter;
| הוא מתגורר עם בורסי אחד שמעון שמו אשר ביתו על יד הים הוא יאמר לך את אשר עליך לעשות׃ | 6 |
he is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
| וילך לו המלאך הדבר אל קרניליוס ויקרא אל שנים מעבדי ביתו ואל איש מלחמה אחד ירא אלהים מן העמדים תמיד לפניו לשרתו׃ | 7 |
So when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who were faithful to him,
| ויספר להם את כל הדברים וישלחם אל יפו׃ | 8 |
and explaining everything to them he sent them to Joppa.
| ויהי ממחרת והמה הלכים בדרך וקרבים לעיר ויעל פטרוס על הגג להתפלל כשעה הששית׃ | 9 |
Now on the next day, as they were traveling and drawing near to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about noon.
| והוא רעב ויתאו לטעם לחם ובהכינם לו נפלה תרדמה עליו׃ | 10 |
Well he became hungry and wanted to eat; but while they were preparing, a trance fell on him,
| וירא את השמים נפתחים והנה כלי ירד אליו כדמות מטפחת בד גדולה ויורד בארבע כנפותיו על הארץ׃ | 11 |
and he saw the heaven opened and a container like a great sheet descending to him—it was tied at the four corners and was being let down to the earth—
| ובתוכו מכל בהמת הארץ וחיה ורמש ועוף השמים׃ | 12 |
in which were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth (both wild animals and reptiles) and birds of the sky.
| ויהי קול אליו לאמר קום פטרוס זבח ואכל׃ | 13 |
Then a voice came to him, “Get up, Peter, slaughter and eat!”
| ויאמר פטרוס חלילה לי אדני כי מעולם לא אכלתי כל פגול וטמא׃ | 14 |
But Peter said: “No way, Lord! Never have I eaten anything ‘common’ or unclean!”
| ויהי עוד קול אליו פעם שנית לאמר את אשר טהר האלהים אתה אל תטמאנו׃ | 15 |
So the voice came to him a second time, “What (pl) God has made clean you must not call ‘common’!”
| וכן היה שלש פעמים והכלי שב והעלה השמימה׃ | 16 |
Well this happened three times, and then the object was taken back up into the sky.
| ויהי בהתפעם רוח פטרוס על המראה אשר ראה והנה האנשים השלוחים מאת קרניליוס שאלו לבית שמעון ויעמדו על הפתח׃ | 17 |
Now as Peter was really perplexed within himself as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, well the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having inquired and found Simon's house, stood before the gate,
| ויקראו וידרשו היש מתגורר שם שמעון המכנה פטרוס׃ | 18 |
and calling out they inquired whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, was staying there as a guest.
| ופטרוס עודנו חשב עם לבבו על המראה והרוח אמר אליו הנה שלשה אנשים מבקשים אותך׃ | 19 |
So as Peter was pondering the vision the Spirit said to him: “Listen, some men are looking for you;
| לכן קום רד ולכה נא אתם ואל תתמהמה כי אנכי שלחתים׃ | 20 |
so get up and go downstairs; and go with them, doubting nothing, for I have sent them.”
| וירד פטרוס אל האנשים הנשלחים אליו מאת קרניליוס ויאמר אנכי האיש אשר אתם מבקשים למה זה באתם הנה׃ | 21 |
So going down to the men Peter said: “Yes, I am the one you are looking for. For what reason have you come?”
| ויאמרו קרניליוס שר מאה איש צדיק וירא אלהים ולו שם טוב בכל עם היהודים צוה על פי מלאך קדוש לקרא לך אל ביתו ולשמע דברים מפיך׃ | 22 |
So they said: “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man, well spoken of by all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by an angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.”
| ויקרא אתם אליו ויאספם הביתה ויהי ממחרת ויצא פטרוס אתם ומקצת האחים אשר ביפו הלכו עמו׃ | 23 |
So he invited them in and put them up. The next day Peter set out with them, also some of the brothers from Joppa went with him;
| ולמחרתו באו אל קסרין וקרניליוס מחכה להם ועמו בני משפחתו וקרוביו ומידעיו הנקהלים אליו׃ | 24 |
and the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his relatives and close friends.
| ויהי כבוא פטרוס ויצא קרניליוס לקראתו ויפל לרגליו וישתחו׃ | 25 |
So when Peter actually arrived, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet and worshiped.
| ויקם אותו פטרוס ויאמר קום כי גם אני אנוש אנכי׃ | 26 |
But Peter lifted him up, saying: “Stand up! I myself am also a man.”
| וידבר אתו ויבא הביתה וימצא רבים נאספים שמה׃ | 27 |
And conversing with him he went in and found many gathered there.
| ויאמר אליהם אתם ידעתם כי אסור הוא לאיש יהודי להלות ולקרב אל נכרי ואתי הורה אלהים לבלתי אמר חל או טמא על כל אדם׃ | 28 |
Then he said to them: “You know how it is unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with or to approach a different race; but God has shown me that I should not call any man ‘common’ or unclean.
| ובעבור זאת כאשר נקראתי לא נמנעתי מהלך ועתה אשאלכם מדוע קראתם לי׃ | 29 |
Therefore also I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. So I ask, for what reason did you send for me?”
| ויאמר קרניליוס זה ארבעה ימים הייתי צם עד השעה הזאת ובשעה התשיעית התפללתי בתוך ביתי והנה איש נצב לפני בלבוש זהר׃ | 30 |
So Cornelius said: “I have been fasting during four days until this very hour; yes, it was the ninth hour, I was praying in my house when wow, a man stood before me in shining clothing
| ויאמר קרניליוס נשמעה תפלתך וצדקותיך היו לזכרון לפני האלהים׃ | 31 |
and said: ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms are remembered before God.
| ועתה שלח אל יפו וקרא אליך את שמעון המכנה פטרוס מתגורר הוא בבית שמעון הבורסי על הים אשר בבואו ידבר לך׃ | 32 |
Send therefore to Joppa and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea; upon arriving he will speak to you.’
| ואמהר ואשלח אליך ואתה היטבת לעשות אשר באת אלי והננו כלנו פה לפני האלהים לשמע את כל אשר צוית מאת יהוה׃ | 33 |
So I sent to you at once, and you did well to come. Now then, we are all present before God to hear all the things commanded you by God.”
| ויפתח פטרוס את פיו ויאמר עתה ידעתי באמת כי האלהים איננו נשא פנים׃ | 34 |
So opening his mouth Peter said: “Really, I comprehend that God is not One to show partiality,
| כי אם בכל עם ועם הירא אותו ועשה צדק רצוי הוא לפניו׃ | 35 |
but in every ethnic nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is acceptable to Him.
| וישלח את דברו לבני ישראל ויבשר את השלום על ידי ישוע המשיח והוא אדון הכל׃ | 36 |
The word that He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—
| אתם ידעתם את הדבר הנעשה בכל יהודה החל מן הגליל אחרי הטבילה אשר קרא אותה יוחנן׃ | 37 |
that spoken word you know, that was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism that John preached:
| את אשר משח האלהים את ישוע הנצרי ברוח הקדש ובגבורה ויעבר בארץ עשה חסד ורפא את כל הנכבשים תחת יד השטן כי האלהים היה עמו׃ | 38 |
Jesus of Natsareth, how God anointed Him with Holy Spirit and power, who went about doing good and healing all those being oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him
| ואנחנו עדים על כל אשר עשה בארץ היהודים ובירושלים ואשר הרגהו בהוקיעם אתו על העץ׃ | 39 |
—yes, we are witnesses of all that He did, both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem—whom they also killed, hanging Him on a tree.
| אותו הקים האלהים ביום השלישי ויתנהו להראות בגלוי׃ | 40 |
Him God raised on the third day, and gave Him to become visible,
| לא לכל העם כי אם לנו העדים אשר האלהים בחר בהם מראש אשר אכלנו ושתינו אתו אחרי קומו מן המתים׃ | 41 |
not to all the people but to witnesses who had been chosen beforehand by God, to us, who ate and drank with Him after He arose out from the dead.
| ויצו אתנו להשמיע לעם ולהעיד כי אתו שם האלהים לשופט החיים והמתים׃ | 42 |
And He ordered us to proclaim to the people, that is, to testify that He is the One who has been ordained by God as Judge of living and dead.
| ועליו כל הנביאים מעידים כי יקבלו סליחת החטאים בשמו כל המאמינים בו׃ | 43 |
To Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes into Him will receive forgiveness of sins.”
| עוד פטרוס מדבר הדברים האלה ורוח הקדש צלחה על כל השמעים את הדבר׃ | 44 |
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were hearing the message.
| והמאמינים בני המילה אשר באו את פטרוס השתוממו כי מתנת רוח הקדש נשפכה גם על הגוים׃ | 45 |
Well the believers of the circumcision [Jews] who had come with Peter were astonished, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been poured out on the Gentiles,
| כי שמעו אתם ממללים בלשנות ומגדלים את האלהים׃ | 46 |
in that they heard them speaking languages and magnifying God. Then Peter responded:
| ויען פטרוס ויאמר היוכל איש למנע את המים מטבל את אלה אשר קבלו את רוח הקדש גם הם כמנו׃ | 47 |
“Surely no one can forbid the water, can he, that these should not be baptized who received the Holy Spirit just like we did?”
| ויצו לטבל אתם בשם האדון ויבקשו ממנו לשבת אתם ימים אחדים׃ | 48 |
So he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
