הָרִאשׁוֹנָה אֶל־הַקּוֹרִנְתִּיִּים 10

1 ולא אכחד מכם אחי אשר אבותינו היו כלם תחת הענן וכלם עברו בתוך הים׃

BUT I would not that you should be ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

2 וכלם נטבלו למשה בענן ובים׃

and were all baptised unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

3 וכלם אכלם מאכל אחד רוחני׃

and did all eat the same spiritual meat;

4 וכלם שתו משקה אחד רוחני כי שתו מן הצור הרוחני ההלך עמהם והצור ההוא היה המשיח׃

and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual rock which followed them; but that rock was Christ.

5 אבל ברבם לא רצה האלהים ופגריהם נפלו במדבר׃

Nevertheless with the most of them God was not well pleased, for they were destroyed in the wilderness.

6 וכל זאת היתה לנו למופת לבלתי התאות לרעה כאשר התאוו גם המה׃

Now these things were examples for us, that we might not be coveters of evil things, as they also coveted.

7 ולא תהיו עבדי אלילים כאשר היו מקצתם כמו שכתוב וישב העם לאכל ושתו ויקמו לצחק׃

Neither be ye idolaters as some of them; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to sport themselves.”

8 ולא נהיה זנים כאשר זנו מקצתם ויפלו ביום אחד שלשה ועשרים אלף איש׃

Neither let us commit whoredom, as some of them also committed, and in one day fell twenty-three thousand.

9 ולא ננסה את המשיח כאשר נסוהו מקצתם ויאבדום הנחשים׃

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents.

10 גם לא תלינו כאשר הלינו מקצתם וימותו ביד המשחית׃

Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and perished by the destroyer.

11 כל זאת מצאתם להיות למופת ותכתב למוסר לנו אשר הגיעו אלינו קצי העולמים׃ (aiōn g165)

Now all these things happened unto them as examples, but they are written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages are come. (aiōn g165)

12 לכן החשב שהוא נצב ירא פן יפול׃

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall.

13 עדין לא בא עליכם נסיון אחר בלתי אם נסיון בני אדם כי נאמן הוא האלהים אשר לא יניח לנסות אתכם למעלה מיכלתכם כי אם יתן עם הנסיון גם תוצאתיו כדי שתוכלו שאת׃

No temptation hath overtaken you, but what is common to men. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted beyond what ye are able to bear; but will with the temptation make also a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear up under it.

14 על כן חביבי נוסו מעבודת אלילים׃

Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

15 כמו אל נבונים מדבר אנכי ושפטו אתם את אשר אמר׃

I speak as unto wise men: judge ye what I say.

16 כוס הברכה אשר אנחנו מברכים הלא היא התחברות דם המשיח והלחם אשר אנחנו בצעים הלא הוא התחברות גוף המשיח׃

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

17 כי לחם אחד הוא לכן גם נוף אחד אנחנו הרבים באשר לכלנו חלק בלחם האחד׃

For we, though many, are one loaf, one body; for we all partake of that one loaf.

18 ראו את ישראל לפי הבשר הלא אכלי הזבחים חברי המזבח המה׃

Behold Israel after the flesh. Are not they who eat of the sacrifices partakers with the altar?

19 ועתה מה אמר היש ממש באליל אם יש ממש בזבחי אלילים׃

What do I say then? that an idol is any thing, or that which is sacrificed to an idol is any thing?

20 אלא את אשר יזבחו הגוים לשדים הם זבחים ולא לאלהים ואני לא אחפץ היתכם חברים לשדים׃

But that what the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to daemons, and not to God: and I would not have you in communion with daemons.

21 לא תוכלו לשתות יחד כוס אדנינו וגם כוס השדים ולא תוכלו להתחבר אל שלחן אדנינו וגם אל שלחן השדים׃

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of daemons: ye cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord, and the table of daemons.

22 הנעז להקניא את אדנינו הכי חזקים אנחנו ממנו׃

Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

23 הכל ברשותי אבל אין הכל מועיל הכל ברשותי אבל אין הכל בנה׃

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not profitable; all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

24 איש איש אל יבקש את תועלת עצמו כי אם את תועלת רעהו׃

Let no man seek his own gratification, but every one another’s good.

25 כל הנמכר במקולין אתו תאכלו ואל תחקרו מפני מכשל הלב׃

Every thing which is sold in the shambles eat, asking no question for conscience sake;

26 כי ליהוה הארץ ומלואה׃

“for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.”

27 ואם יקרא אתכם איש מאשר אינם מאמינים ותרצו ללכת אליו אכול תאכלו מכל אשר ישימו לפניכם ואל תחקרו מפני מכשול הלב׃

And if any one of those, who do not believe, invite you, and ye incline to go, eat every thing set before you, asking no question for conscience sake.

28 ואיש כי יאמר אליכם זה הוא זבח אלילים אל תאכלו בעבור המודיע ומפני מכשול הלב כי ליהוה הארץ ולמואה׃

But if any person say unto you, This is an idol’s sacrifice, eat not of it, for his sake who pointed it out, and for conscience sake. For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.

29 והלב אשר אני אמר לא לבך כי אם לב רעך כי למה זה תשפט חרותי על ידי לב האחר׃

Conscience indeed I say, not merely thine own, but that of the other person.

30 ואם אכל אני בתודה למה אהיה מגדף על הדבר אשר אני מודה עליו׃

For why is my liberty abridged by another’s conscience? If I truly with thanksgiving am a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

31 לכן אם תאכלו או אם תשתו או כל אשר תעשו את הכל עשו לכבוד אלהים׃

Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all things to the glory of God.

32 ואל תתנו מכשול לא ליהודים ולא ליונים ולא לקהלת אלהים׃

Give no occasion of stumbling either to the Jews or the Gentiles, or the church of God:

33 כאשר גם אנכי מבקש להיות רצוי לכל בכל ולא אבקש תועלת עצמי כי אם של הרבים למען יושעו׃

even as I please all men, not seeking my own advantage, but that of the many, that they may be saved.
