בֵּן חָכָם מוּסַר אָב וְלֵץ לֹא־שָׁמַע גְּעָרָֽה׃ | 1 |
A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a scoffer listens not to rebuke.
מִפְּרִי פִי־אִישׁ יֹאכַל טוֹב וְנֶפֶשׁ בֹּגְדִים חָמָֽס׃ | 2 |
A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth, but the soul of the treacherous, violence.
נֹצֵר פִּיו שֹׁמֵר נַפְשׁוֹ פֹּשֵׂק שְׂפָתָיו מְחִתָּה־לֽוֹ׃ | 3 |
He who guards his mouth keeps his life. He who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.
מִתְאַוָּה וָאַיִן נַפְשׁוֹ עָצֵל וְנֶפֶשׁ חָרֻצִים תְּדֻשָּֽׁן׃ | 4 |
The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
דְּבַר־שֶׁקֶר יִשְׂנָא צַדִּיק וְרָשָׁע יַבְאִישׁ וְיַחְפִּֽיר׃ | 5 |
A righteous man hates lying, but a wicked man is loathsome, and comes to shame.
צְדָקָה תִּצֹּר תָּם־דָּרֶךְ וְרִשְׁעָה תְּסַלֵּף חַטָּֽאת׃ | 6 |
Righteousness guards him who is upright in the way, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
יֵשׁ מִתְעַשֵּׁר וְאֵין כֹּל מִתְרוֹשֵׁשׁ וְהוֹן רָֽב׃ | 7 |
There is he who makes himself rich, yet has nothing, and he who makes himself poor, yet has great wealth.
כֹּפֶר נֶֽפֶשׁ־אִישׁ עָשְׁרוֹ וְרָשׁ לֹא־שָׁמַע גְּעָרָֽה׃ | 8 |
The ransom of a man's life is his riches, but the poor hears no threatening.
אוֹר־צַדִּיקִים יִשְׂמָח וְנֵר רְשָׁעִים יִדְעָֽךְ׃ | 9 |
The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
רַק־בְּזָדוֹן יִתֵּן מַצָּה וְאֶת־נוֹעָצִים חָכְמָֽה׃ | 10 |
Through pride a vain man causes contention, but wisdom is with the well-advised.
הוֹן מֵהֶבֶל יִמְעָט וְקֹבֵץ עַל־יָד יַרְבֶּֽה׃ | 11 |
Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished, but he who gathers by labor shall have increase.
תּוֹחֶלֶת מְמֻשָּׁכָה מַחֲלָה־לֵב וְעֵץ חַיִּים תַּאֲוָה בָאָֽה׃ | 12 |
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.
בָּז לְדָבָר יֵחָבֶל לוֹ וִירֵא מִצְוָה הוּא יְשֻׁלָּֽם׃ | 13 |
He who despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who fears the commandment shall be rewarded.
תּוֹרַת חָכָם מְקוֹר חַיִּים לָסוּר מִמֹּקְשֵׁי מָֽוֶת׃ | 14 |
The law of a wise man is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
שֵֽׂכֶל־טוֹב יִתֶּן־חֵן וְדֶרֶךְ בֹּגְדִים אֵיתָֽן׃ | 15 |
Good understanding gives favor, but the way of the transgressor is hard.
כָּל־עָרוּם יַעֲשֶׂה בְדָעַת וּכְסִיל יִפְרֹשׂ אִוֶּֽלֶת׃ | 16 |
Every prudent man works with knowledge, but a fool flaunts folly.
מַלְאָךְ רָשָׁע יִפֹּל בְּרָע וְצִיר אֱמוּנִים מַרְפֵּֽא׃ | 17 |
A wicked messenger falls into evil, but a faithful ambassador is health.
רֵישׁ וְקָלוֹן פּוֹרֵעַ מוּסָר וְשׁוֹמֵר תּוֹכַחַת יְכֻבָּֽד׃ | 18 |
Poverty and shame are to him who refuses correction, but he who regards reproof shall be honored.
תַּאֲוָה נִהְיָה תֶּעֱרַב לְנָפֶשׁ וְתוֹעֲבַת כְּסִילִים סוּר מֵרָֽע׃ | 19 |
The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, but it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.
הלוך הוֹלֵךְ אֶת־חֲכָמִים וחכם יֶחְכָּם וְרֹעֶה כְסִילִים יֵרֽוֹעַ׃ | 20 |
Walk with wise men, and thou shall be wise. But the companion of fools shall smart for it.
חַטָּאִים תְּרַדֵּף רָעָה וְאֶת־צַדִּיקִים יְשַׁלֶּם־טֽוֹב׃ | 21 |
Evil pursues sinners, but the righteous shall be recompensed with good.
טוֹב יַנְחִיל בְּנֵֽי־בָנִים וְצָפוּן לַצַּדִּיק חֵיל חוֹטֵֽא׃ | 22 |
A good man leaves an inheritance to his son's sons, and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.
רָב־אֹכֶל נִיר רָאשִׁים וְיֵשׁ נִסְפֶּה בְּלֹא מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ | 23 |
Much food is in the tillage of the poor, but there is that is consumed because of injustice.
חוֹשֵׂךְ שִׁבְטוֹ שׂוֹנֵא בְנוֹ וְאֹהֲבוֹ שִֽׁחֲרוֹ מוּסָֽר׃ | 24 |
He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him chastens him promptly.
צַדִּיק אֹכֵל לְשֹׂבַע נַפְשׁוֹ וּבֶטֶן רְשָׁעִים תֶּחְסָֽר׃ | 25 |
A righteous man eats to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked shall want.
