אִ֣ישׁ תֹּ֭וכָחֹות מַקְשֶׁה־עֹ֑רֶף פֶּ֥תַע יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר וְאֵ֣ין מַרְפֵּֽא׃ | 1 |
He who is often rebuked and stiffens his neck will be destroyed suddenly, with no remedy.
בִּרְבֹ֣ות צַ֭דִּיקִים יִשְׂמַ֣ח הָעָ֑ם וּבִמְשֹׁ֥ל רָ֝שָׁ֗ע יֵאָ֥נַֽח עָֽם׃ | 2 |
When the upright thrive, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
אִֽישׁ־אֹהֵ֣ב חָ֭כְמָה יְשַׂמַּ֣ח אָבִ֑יו וְרֹעֶ֥ה זֹ֝ונֹ֗ות יְאַבֶּד־הֹֽון׃ | 3 |
Whoever 'ahav ·affectionately loves· wisdom brings joy to his father; but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
מֶ֗לֶךְ בְּ֭מִשְׁפָּט יַעֲמִ֣יד אָ֑רֶץ וְאִ֖ישׁ תְּרוּמֹ֣ות יֶֽהֶרְסֶֽנָּה׃ | 4 |
The king by mishpat ·justice· makes the land stable, but he who takes bribes tears it down.
גֶּ֭בֶר מַחֲלִ֣יק עַל־רֵעֵ֑הוּ רֶ֝֗שֶׁת פֹּורֵ֥שׂ עַל־פְּעָמָֽיו׃ | 5 |
A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.
בְּפֶ֤שַֽׁע אִ֣ישׁ רָ֣ע מֹוקֵ֑שׁ וְ֝צַדִּ֗יק יָר֥וּן וְשָׂמֵֽחַ׃ | 6 |
An evil man is snared by his rebellious breach of relationship, but the upright can sing and be glad.
יֹדֵ֣עַ צַ֭דִּיק דִּ֣ין דַּלִּ֑ים רָ֝שָׁ֗ע לֹא־יָבִ֥ין דָּֽעַת׃ | 7 |
The upright care about justice for the poor. The wicked are not concerned about knowledge.
אַנְשֵׁ֣י לָ֭צֹון יָפִ֣יחוּ קִרְיָ֑ה וַ֝חֲכָמִ֗ים יָשִׁ֥יבוּ אָֽף׃ | 8 |
Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.
אִֽישׁ־חָכָ֗ם נִ֭שְׁפָּט אֶת־אִ֣ישׁ אֱוִ֑יל וְרָגַ֥ז וְ֝שָׂחַ֗ק וְאֵ֣ין נָֽחַת׃ | 9 |
If a wise man goes to court with a foolish man, the fool rages or scoffs, and there is no peace.
אַנְשֵׁ֣י דָ֭מִים יִשְׂנְאוּ־תָ֑ם וִֽ֝ישָׁרִ֗ים יְבַקְשׁ֥וּ נַפְשֹֽׁו׃ | 10 |
The bloodthirsty hate a man of integrity; and they seek the life of the upright.
כָּל־ר֭וּחֹו יֹוצִ֣יא כְסִ֑יל וְ֝חָכָ֗ם בְּאָחֹ֥ור יְשַׁבְּחֶֽנָּה׃ | 11 |
A fool vents all of his anger, but a wise man brings himself under control.
מֹ֭שֵׁל מַקְשִׁ֣יב עַל־דְּבַר־שָׁ֑קֶר כָּֽל־מְשָׁרְתָ֥יו רְשָׁעִֽים׃ | 12 |
If a ruler listens to lies, all of his officials are wicked.
רָ֤שׁ וְאִ֣ישׁ תְּכָכִ֣ים נִפְגָּ֑שׁוּ מֵ֤אִיר־עֵינֵ֖י שְׁנֵיהֶ֣ם יְהוֽ͏ָה׃ | 13 |
The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: Adonai gives sight to the eyes of both.
מֶ֤לֶךְ שֹׁופֵ֣ט בֶּֽאֱמֶ֣ת דַּלִּ֑ים כִּ֝סְאֹ֗ו לָעַ֥ד יִכֹּֽון׃ | 14 |
The king who fairly judges the poor, his throne shall be established forever.
שֵׁ֣בֶט וְ֭תֹוכַחַת יִתֵּ֣ן חָכְמָ֑ה וְנַ֥עַר מְ֝שֻׁלָּ֗ח מֵבִ֥ישׁ אִמֹּֽו׃ | 15 |
The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a child left to himself causes shame to his mother.
בִּרְבֹ֣ות רְ֭שָׁעִים יִרְבֶּה־פָּ֑שַׁע וְ֝צַדִּיקִ֗ים בְּֽמַפַּלְתָּ֥ם יִרְאֽוּ׃ | 16 |
When the wicked increase, rebellious breach of relationships increases; but the upright will see their downfall.
יַסֵּ֣ר בִּ֭נְךָ וִֽינִיחֶ֑ךָ וְיִתֵּ֖ן מַעֲדַנִּ֣ים לְנַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ פ | 17 |
Correct your son, and he will give you peace; yes, he will bring delight to your soul.
בְּאֵ֣ין חָ֭זֹון יִפָּ֣רַֽע עָ֑ם וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר תֹּורָ֣ה אַשְׁרֵֽהוּ׃ | 18 |
Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the Torah ·Teaching· is blessed.
בִּ֭דְבָרִים לֹא־יִוָּ֣סֶר עָ֑בֶד כִּֽי־יָ֝בִ֗ין וְאֵ֣ין מַעֲנֶֽה׃ | 19 |
A servant can’t be corrected by words. Though he understands, yet he will not respond.
חָזִ֗יתָ אִ֭ישׁ אָ֣ץ בִּדְבָרָ֑יו תִּקְוָ֖ה לִכְסִ֣יל מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ | 20 |
Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
מְפַנֵּ֣ק מִנֹּ֣עַר עַבְדֹּ֑ו וְ֝אַחֲרִיתֹ֗ו יִהְיֶ֥ה מָנֹֽון׃ | 21 |
He who pampers his servant from youth will have him become a son in the end.
אִֽישׁ־אַ֭ף יְגָרֶ֣ה מָדֹ֑ון וּבַ֖עַל חֵמָ֣ה רַב־פָּֽשַׁע׃ | 22 |
An angry man stirs up strife, and a wrathful man abounds in rebellious breach of relationships.
גַּאֲוַ֣ת אָ֭דָם תַּשְׁפִּילֶ֑נּוּ וּשְׁפַל־ר֝֗וּחַ יִתְמֹ֥ךְ כָּבֹֽוד׃ | 23 |
A man’s pride brings him low, but one of lowly spirit gains kavod ·weighty glory·.
חֹולֵ֣ק עִם־גַּ֭נָּב שֹׂונֵ֣א נַפְשֹׁ֑ו אָלָ֥ה יִ֝שְׁמַ֗ע וְלֹ֣א יַגִּֽיד׃ | 24 |
Whoever is an accomplice of a thief is an enemy of his own soul. He sh'ma ·hears obeys· an oath, but dares not testify.
חֶרְדַּ֣ת אָ֭דָם יִתֵּ֣ן מֹוקֵ֑שׁ וּבֹוטֵ֖חַ בַּיהוָ֣ה יְשֻׂגָּֽב׃ | 25 |
The fear of man proves to be a snare, but whoever puts his trust in Adonai is kept safe.
רַ֭בִּים מְבַקְשִׁ֣ים פְּנֵי־מֹושֵׁ֑ל וּ֝מֵיְהוָ֗ה מִשְׁפַּט־אִֽישׁ׃ | 26 |
Many seek the ruler’s favor, but a man’s mishpat ·justice· comes from Adonai.
תֹּועֲבַ֣ת צַ֭דִּיקִים אִ֣ישׁ עָ֑וֶל וְתֹועֲבַ֖ת רָשָׁ֣ע יְשַׁר־דָּֽרֶךְ׃ פ | 27 |
A dishonest man detests the upright, and the upright in their ways detest the wicked.
