טוב-רש הולך בתמו-- מעקש שפתיו והוא כסיל | 1 |
Better is the poor that walks in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
גם בלא-דעת נפש לא-טוב ואץ ברגלים חוטא | 2 |
Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hastens with his feet sins.
אולת אדם תסלף דרכו ועל-יהוה יזעף לבו | 3 |
The foolishness of man perverts his way: and his heart frets against the LORD.
הון--יסיף רעים רבים ודל מרעהו יפרד | 4 |
Wealth makes many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbor.
עד שקרים לא ינקה ויפיח כזבים לא ימלט | 5 |
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.
רבים יחלו פני-נדיב וכל-הרע לאיש מתן | 6 |
Many will entreat the favor of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that gives gifts.
כל אחי-רש שנאהו-- אף כי מרעהו רחקו ממנו מרדף אמרים לא- (לו-) המה | 7 |
All the brothers of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursues them with words, yet they are wanting to him.
קנה-לב אהב נפשו שמר תבונה למצא-טוב | 8 |
He that gets wisdom loves his own soul: he that keeps understanding shall find good.
עד שקרים לא ינקה ויפיח כזבים יאבד | 9 |
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.
לא-נאוה לכסיל תענוג אף כי-לעבד משל בשרים | 10 |
Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
שכל אדם האריך אפו ותפארתו עבר על-פשע | 11 |
The discretion of a man defers his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
נהם ככפיר זעף מלך וכטל על-עשב רצונו | 12 |
The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favor is as dew on the grass.
הות לאביו בן כסיל ודלף טרד מדיני אשה | 13 |
A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.
בית והון נחלת אבות ומיהוה אשה משכלת | 14 |
House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.
עצלה תפיל תרדמה ונפש רמיה תרעב | 15 |
Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.
שמר מצוה שמר נפשו בוזה דרכיו יומת (ימות) | 16 |
He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall die.
מלוה יהוה חונן דל וגמלו ישלם-לו | 17 |
He that has pity on the poor lends to the LORD; and that which he has given will he pay him again.
יסר בנך כי-יש תקוה ואל-המיתו אל-תשא נפשך | 18 |
Chasten your son while there is hope, and let not your soul spare for his crying.
גרל- (גדל-) חמה נשא ענש כי אם-תציל ועוד תוסף | 19 |
A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if you deliver him, yet you must do it again.
שמע עצה וקבל מוסר-- למען תחכם באחריתך | 20 |
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.
רבות מחשבות בלב-איש ועצת יהוה היא תקום | 21 |
There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
תאות אדם חסדו וטוב-רש מאיש כזב | 22 |
The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.
יראת יהוה לחיים ושבע ילין בל-יפקד רע | 23 |
The fear of the LORD tends to life: and he that has it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
טמן עצל ידו בצלחת גם-אל-פיהו לא ישיבנה | 24 |
A slothful man hides his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.
לץ תכה ופתי יערם והוכיח לנבון יבין דעת | 25 |
Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.
משדד-אב יבריח אם-- בן מביש ומחפיר | 26 |
He that wastes his father, and chases away his mother, is a son that causes shame, and brings reproach.
חדל-בני לשמע מוסר לשגות מאמרי-דעת | 27 |
Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causes to err from the words of knowledge.
עד בליעל יליץ משפט ופי רשעים יבלע-און | 28 |
An ungodly witness scorns judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.
נכונו ללצים שפטים ומהלמות לגו כסילים | 29 |
Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
