מִשְׁלֵי 13
| בן חכם מוסר אב ולץ לא-שמע גערה | 1 |
A wise son listeneth to the instruction of his father; But a scoffer listeneth not to rebuke.
| מפרי פי-איש יאכל טוב ונפש בגדים חמס | 2 |
By the fruit of a man's mouth he shall eat good; But the appetite of transgressors shall be sated with violence.
| נצר פיו שמר נפשו פשק שפתיו מחתה-לו | 3 |
He who keepeth his mouth keepeth his life; But destruction shall be to him who openeth wide his lips.
| מתאוה ואין נפשו עצל ונפש חרצים תדשן | 4 |
The appetite of the sluggard longeth, and hath nothing; But the appetite of the diligent is fully satisfied.
| דבר-שקר ישנא צדיק ורשע יבאיש ויחפיר | 5 |
A righteous man hateth words of falsehood; But a wicked man causeth disgrace and shame.
| צדקה תצר תם-דרך ורשעה תסלף חטאת | 6 |
Righteousness preserveth him who is upright in his way; But wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
| יש מתעשר ואין כל מתרושש והון רב | 7 |
There is who maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing, Who maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
| כפר נפש-איש עשרו ורש לא-שמע גערה | 8 |
A man's wealth is the ransom of his life; But the poor man heareth no threatenings.
| אור-צדיקים ישמח ונר רשעים ידעך | 9 |
The light of the righteous shall rejoice; But the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
| רק-בזדון יתן מצה ואת-נועצים חכמה | 10 |
By pride cometh only contention; But with the well-advised is wisdom.
| הון מהבל ימעט וקבץ על-יד ירבה | 11 |
Wealth gotten by vanity will become small; But he who gathereth it into the hand increaseth it.
| תוחלת ממשכה מחלה-לב ועץ חיים תאוה באה | 12 |
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; But the desire accomplished is a tree of life.
| בז לדבר יחבל לו וירא מצוה הוא ישלם | 13 |
He that despiseth the word shall be destroyed; But he who revereth the commandment shall be rewarded.
| תורת חכם מקור חיים-- לסור ממקשי מות | 14 |
The instruction of the wise is a fountain of life; By it men escape from the snares of death.
| שכל-טוב יתן-חן ודרך בגדים איתן | 15 |
A good understanding winneth favor; But the way of transgressors is hard.
| כל-ערום יעשה בדעת וכסיל יפרש אולת | 16 |
Every prudent man acteth with knowledge; But a fool spreadeth abroad his folly.
| מלאך רשע יפל ברע וציר אמונים מרפא | 17 |
A wicked messenger falleth into trouble; But a faithful ambassador is health.
| ריש וקלון פורע מוסר ושמר תוכחת יכבד | 18 |
Poverty and shame are for him who rejecteth instruction; But he that regardeth reproof shall come to honor.
| תאוה נהיה תערב לנפש ותועבת כסילים סור מרע | 19 |
The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.
| הלוך (הולך) את-חכמים וחכם (יחכם) ורעה כסילים ירוע | 20 |
He who walketh with wise men shall be wise; But the companion of fools shall be destroyed.
| חטאים תרדף רעה ואת-צדיקים ישלם-טוב | 21 |
Calamity pursueth the wicked; But the righteous is rewarded with good.
| טוב--ינחיל בני-בנים וצפון לצדיק חיל חוטא | 22 |
The good man leaveth his substance to his children's children; But the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
| רב-אכל ניר ראשים ויש נספה בלא משפט | 23 |
There is much food from the fallow-ground of the poor; But there is who is brought low for want of uprightness.
| חושך שבטו שונא בנו ואהבו שחרו מוסר | 24 |
He that spareth the rod hateth his son; But he who loveth him chasteneth him early.
| צדיק--אכל לשבע נפשו ובטן רשעים תחסר | 25 |
The righteous man eateth to the satisfying of his desire; But the stomach of the wicked suffereth want.
