בראשית 35

1 ויאמר אלהים אל יעקב קום עלה בית אל ושב שם ועשה שם מזבח--לאל הנראה אליך בברחך מפני עשו אחיך

And God says to Jacob, “Rise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared to you in your fleeing from the face of your brother Esau.”

2 ויאמר יעקב אל ביתו ואל כל אשר עמו הסרו את אלהי הנכר אשר בתככם והטהרו והחליפו שמלתיכם

And Jacob says to his household, and to all who [are] with him, “Turn aside the gods of the stranger which [are] in your midst, and cleanse yourselves, and change your garments;

3 ונקומה ונעלה בית אל ואעשה שם מזבח לאל הענה אתי ביום צרתי ויהי עמדי בדרך אשר הלכתי

and we rise, and go up to Bethel, and I make there an altar to God, who is answering me in the day of my tribulation, and is with me in the way that I have gone.”

4 ויתנו אל יעקב את כל אלהי הנכר אשר בידם ואת הנזמים אשר באזניהם ויטמן אתם יעקב תחת האלה אשר עם שכם

And they give to Jacob all the gods of the stranger that [are] in their hand, and the rings that [are] in their ears, and Jacob hides them under the oak which [is] by Shechem;

5 ויסעו ויהי חתת אלהים על הערים אשר סביבותיהם ולא רדפו אחרי בני יעקב

and they journey, and the terror of God is on the cities which [are] around them, and they have not pursued after the sons of Jacob.

6 ויבא יעקב לוזה אשר בארץ כנען--הוא בית אל הוא וכל העם אשר עמו

And Jacob comes to Luz which [is] in the land of Canaan (it [is] Bethel), he and all the people who [are] with him,

7 ויבן שם מזבח ויקרא למקום אל בית אל כי שם נגלו אליו האלהים בברחו מפני אחיו

and he builds there an altar, and proclaims at the place the God of Bethel: for there had God been revealed to him, in his fleeing from the face of his brother.

8 ותמת דברה מינקת רבקה ותקבר מתחת לבית אל תחת האלון ויקרא שמו אלון בכות

And Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, dies, and she is buried at the lower part of Bethel, under the oak, and he calls its name “Oak of Weeping.”

9 וירא אלהים אל יעקב עוד בבאו מפדן ארם ויברך אתו

And God appears to Jacob again, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and blesses him;

10 ויאמר לו אלהים שמך יעקב לא יקרא שמך עוד יעקב כי אם ישראל יהיה שמך ויקרא את שמו ישראל

and God says to him, “Your name [is] Jacob: your name is no longer called Jacob, but Israel is your name”; and He calls his name Israel.

11 ויאמר לו אלהים אני אל שדי פרה ורבה--גוי וקהל גוים יהיה ממך ומלכים מחלציך יצאו

And God says to him, “I [am] God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply, a nation and an assembly of nations is from you, and kings from your loins go out;

12 ואת הארץ אשר נתתי לאברהם וליצחק--לך אתננה ולזרעך אחריך אתן את הארץ

and the land which I have given to Abraham and to Isaac—to you I give it, indeed to your seed after you I give the land.”

13 ויעל מעליו אלהים במקום אשר דבר אתו

And God goes up from him, in the place where He has spoken with him.

14 ויצב יעקב מצבה במקום אשר דבר אתו--מצבת אבן ויסך עליה נסך ויצק עליה שמן

And Jacob sets up a standing pillar in the place where He has spoken with him, a standing pillar of stone, and he pours on it an oblation, and he pours on it oil;

15 ויקרא יעקב את שם המקום אשר דבר אתו שם אלהים--בית אל

and Jacob calls the name of the place where God spoke with him Bethel.

16 ויסעו מבית אל ויהי עוד כברת הארץ לבוא אפרתה ותלד רחל ותקש בלדתה

And they journey from Bethel, and there is yet a distance of land before entering Ephratha, and Rachel bears, and is sharply pained in her bearing;

17 ויהי בהקשתה בלדתה ותאמר לה המילדת אל תיראי כי גם זה לך בן

and it comes to pass, in her being sharply pained in her bearing, that the midwife says to her, “Do not fear, for this also [is] a son for you.”

18 ויהי בצאת נפשה כי מתה ותקרא שמו בן אוני ואביו קרא לו בנימין

And it comes to pass in the going out of her soul (for she died), that she calls his name Ben-Oni; and his father called him Benjamin;

19 ותמת רחל ותקבר בדרך אפרתה הוא בית לחם

and Rachel dies, and is buried in the way to Ephratha, which [is] Beth-Lehem,

20 ויצב יעקב מצבה על קברתה--הוא מצבת קברת רחל עד היום

and Jacob sets up a standing pillar over her grave; which [is] the standing pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.

21 ויסע ישראל ויט אהלה מהלאה למגדל עדר

And Israel journeys, and stretches out his tent beyond the Tower of Edar;

22 ויהי בשכן ישראל בארץ ההוא וילך ראובן וישכב את בלהה פילגש אביו וישמע ישראל ויהיו בני יעקב שנים עשר

and it comes to pass in Israel’s dwelling in that land, that Reuben goes, and lies with his father’s concubine Bilhah; and Israel hears.

23 בני לאה בכור יעקב ראובן ושמעון ולוי ויהודה ויששכר וזבלון

And the sons of Jacob are twelve. Sons of Leah: Jacob’s firstborn Reuben, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun.

24 בני רחל יוסף ובנימן

Sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

25 ובני בלהה שפחת רחל דן ונפתלי

And sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant: Dan and Naphtali.

26 ובני זלפה שפחת לאה גד ואשר אלה בני יעקב אשר ילד לו בפדן ארם

And sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant: Gad and Asher. These [are] sons of Jacob, who have been born to him in Padan-Aram.

27 ויבא יעקב אל יצחק אביו ממרא קרית הארבע--הוא חברון אשר גר שם אברהם ויצחק

And Jacob comes to his father Isaac, at Mamre, the city of Arba (which [is] Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac have sojourned.

28 ויהיו ימי יצחק--מאת שנה ושמנים שנה

And the days of Isaac are one hundred and eighty years,

29 ויגוע יצחק וימת ויאסף אל עמיו זקן ושבע ימים ויקברו אתו עשו ויעקב בניו

and Isaac expires, and dies, and is gathered to his people, aged and satisfied with days; and his sons Esau and Jacob bury him.
