| ויסעו כל עדת בני ישראל ממדבר סין למסעיהם--על פי יהוה ויחנו ברפידים ואין מים לשתת העם | 1 |
And all the congregation of the sons of Israel journey from the wilderness of Sin, on their journeys, by the command of YHWH, and encamp in Rephidim, and there is no water for the people to drink;
| וירב העם עם משה ויאמרו תנו לנו מים ונשתה ויאמר להם משה מה תריבון עמדי מה תנסון את יהוה | 2 |
and the people strive with Moses, and say, “Give us water, and we drink.” And Moses says to them, “Why do you strive with me? Why do you try YHWH?”
| ויצמא שם העם למים וילן העם על משה ויאמר למה זה העליתנו ממצרים להמית אתי ואת בני ואת מקני בצמא | 3 |
And the people thirst for water there, and the people murmur against Moses, and say, “Why [is] this [that] you have brought us up out of Egypt to put us to death, also our sons and our livestock, with thirst?”
| ויצעק משה אל יהוה לאמר מה אעשה לעם הזה עוד מעט וסקלני | 4 |
And Moses cries to YHWH, saying, “What do I do to this people? Yet a little, and they have stoned me.”
| ויאמר יהוה אל משה עבר לפני העם וקח אתך מזקני ישראל ומטך אשר הכית בו את היאר--קח בידך והלכת | 5 |
And YHWH says to Moses, “Pass over before the people, and take with you from [the] elderly of Israel, and take your rod in your hand, with which you have struck the River, and you have gone.
| הנני עמד לפניך שם על הצור בחרב והכית בצור ויצאו ממנו מים ושתה העם ויעש כן משה לעיני זקני ישראל | 6 |
Behold, I am standing before you there on the rock in Horeb, and you have struck on the rock, and waters have come out from it, and the people have drunk.” And Moses does so before the eyes of [the] elderly of Israel,
| ויקרא שם המקום מסה ומריבה על ריב בני ישראל ועל נסתם את יהוה לאמר היש יהוה בקרבנו אם אין | 7 |
and he calls the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the strife of the sons of Israel, and because of their trying YHWH, saying, “Is YHWH in our midst or not?”
| ויבא עמלק וילחם עם ישראל ברפידם | 8 |
And Amalek comes, and fights with Israel in Rephidim,
| ויאמר משה אל יהושע בחר לנו אנשים וצא הלחם בעמלק מחר אנכי נצב על ראש הגבעה ומטה האלהים בידי | 9 |
and Moses says to Joshua, “Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek: tomorrow I am standing on the top of the hill, and the rod of God in my hand.”
| ויעש יהושע כאשר אמר לו משה--להלחם בעמלק ומשה אהרן וחור עלו ראש הגבעה | 10 |
And Joshua does as Moses has said to him, to fight with Amalek, and Moses, Aaron, and Hur have gone up [to] the top of the height;
| והיה כאשר ירים משה ידו--וגבר ישראל וכאשר יניח ידו וגבר עמלק | 11 |
and it has come to pass, when Moses lifts up his hand, that Israel has been mighty, and when he lets his hands rest, that Amalek has been mighty.
| וידי משה כבדים ויקחו אבן וישימו תחתיו וישב עליה ואהרן וחור תמכו בידיו מזה אחד ומזה אחד ויהי ידיו אמונה עד בא השמש | 12 |
And the hands of Moses [are] heavy, and they take a stone and set [it] under him, and he sits on it, and Aaron and Hur have taken hold on his hands, one on this [side] and one on that [side]; and his hands are steadfast until the going in of the sun;
| ויחלש יהושע את עמלק ואת עמו לפי חרב | 13 |
and Joshua weakens Amalek and his people by the mouth of the sword.
| ויאמר יהוה אל משה כתב זאת זכרון בספר ושים באזני יהושע כי מחה אמחה את זכר עמלק מתחת השמים | 14 |
And YHWH says to Moses, “Write this, a memorial in a Scroll, and set [it] in the ears of Joshua, that I utterly wipe away the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens”;
| ויבן משה מזבח ויקרא שמו יהוה נסי | 15 |
and Moses builds an altar, and calls its name YHWH-Nissi,
| ויאמר כי יד על כס יה מלחמה ליהוה בעמלק--מדר דר | 16 |
and says, “Because a hand [is] on the throne of YAH, war [is] to YHWH with Amalek from generation [to] generation.”
