שמואל א 2

1 ותתפלל חנה ותאמר עלץ לבי ביהוה רמה קרני ביהוה רחב פי על אויבי כי שמחתי בישועתך

My heart is established in the Lord, my horn is exalted in my God; my mouth is enlarged over my enemies, I have rejoiced in your salvation.

2 אין קדוש כיהוה כי אין בלתך ואין צור כאלהינו

For there is none holy as the Lord, and there is none righteous as our God; there is none holy besides you.

3 אל תרבו תדברו גבהה גבהה יצא עתק מפיכם כי אל דעות יהוה ולא (ולו) נתכנו עללות

Boast not, and utter not high things; let not high-sounding words come out of your mouth, for the Lord [is] a God of knowledge, and God prepares his own designs.

4 קשת גברים חתים ונכשלים אזרו חיל

The bow of the mighty has waxed feeble, and the weak have girded themselves with strength.

5 שבעים בלחם נשכרו ורעבים חדלו עד עקרה ילדה שבעה ורבת בנים אמללה

They that were full of bread are brought low; and the hungry have forsaken the land; for the barren has born seven, and she that abounded in children has waxed feeble.

6 יהוה ממית ומחיה מוריד שאול ויעל (Sheol h7585)

The Lord kills and makes alive; he brings down to the grave, and brings up. (Sheol h7585)

7 יהוה מוריש ומעשיר משפיל אף מרומם

The Lord makes poor, and makes rich; he brings low, and lifts up.

8 מקים מעפר דל מאשפת ירים אביון להושיב עם נדיבים וכסא כבוד ינחלם כי ליהוה מצקי ארץ וישת עליהם תבל

He lifts up the poor from the earth, and raises the needy from the dunghill; to seat him with the princes of the people, and causing them to inherit the throne of glory:

9 רגלי חסידו ישמר ורשעים בחשך ידמו כי לא בכח יגבר איש

granting his petition to him that prays; and he blesses the years of the righteous, for by strength can’t man prevail.

10 יהוה יחתו מריבו עלו בשמים ירעם--יהוה ידין אפסי ארץ ויתן עז למלכו וירם קרן משיחו

The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

11 וילך אלקנה הרמתה על ביתו והנער היה משרת את יהוה את פני עלי הכהן

and departed to Armathaim: and the child ministered in the presence of the Lord before Heli the priest.

12 ובני עלי בני בליעל לא ידעו את יהוה

And the sons of Heli the priest [were] evil sons, not knowing the Lord.

13 ומשפט הכהנים את העם--כל איש זבח זבח ובא נער הכהן כבשל הבשר והמזלג שלש השנים בידו

And the priest's claim from every one of the people that sacrificed [was this: ] the servant of the priest came when the flesh was in seething, and a flesh-hook of three teeth [was] in his hand.

14 והכה בכיור או בדוד או בקלחת או בפרור--כל אשר יעלה המזלג יקח הכהן בו ככה יעשו לכל ישראל הבאים שם בשלה

And he struck it into the great caldron, or into the brazen vessel, or into the pot, and whatever came up with the flesh-hook, the priest took for himself: so they did to all Israel that came to sacrifice to the Lord in Selom.

15 גם בטרם יקטרון את החלב ובא נער הכהן ואמר לאיש הזבח תנה בשר לצלות לכהן ולא יקח ממך בשר מבשל כי אם חי

And before the fat was burnt for a sweet savor, the servant of the priest would come, and say to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest, and I will by no means take of you sodden flesh out of the caldron.

16 ויאמר אליו האיש קטר יקטירון כיום החלב וקח לך כאשר תאוה נפשך ואמר לו (לא) כי עתה תתן--ואם לא לקחתי בחזקה

And [if] the man that sacrificed said, First let the fat be burned, as it is fit, and take for yourself of all things which your soul desires: then he would say, Nay, for you shall give it me now; and if not I will take it by force.

17 ותהי חטאת הנערים גדולה מאד את פני יהוה כי נאצו האנשים את מנחת יהוה

So the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for they set at nothing the offering of the Lord.

18 ושמואל משרת את פני יהוה נער חגור אפוד בד

And Samuel ministered before the Lord, a child girded with a linen ephod.

19 ומעיל קטן תעשה לו אמו והעלתה לו מימים ימימה--בעלותה את אישה לזבח את זבח הימים

And his mother made him a little doublet, and brought it to him from year to year, in her going up in company with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

20 וברך עלי את אלקנה ואת אשתו ואמר ישם יהוה לך זרע מן האשה הזאת תחת השאלה אשר שאל ליהוה והלכו למקומו

And Heli blessed Helcana and his wife, saying The Lord recompense to you seed of this woman, in return for the loan which you have lent to the Lord: and the man returned to his place.

21 כי פקד יהוה את חנה ותהר ותלד שלשה בנים ושתי בנות ויגדל הנער שמואל עם יהוה

And the Lord visited Anna, and she bore yet three sons, and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the Lord.

22 ועלי זקן מאד ושמע את כל אשר יעשון בניו לכל ישראל ואת אשר ישכבון את הנשים הצבאות פתח אהל מועד

And Heli [was] very old, and he heard what his sons did to the children of Israel.

23 ויאמר להם למה תעשון כדברים האלה אשר אנכי שמע את דבריכם רעים מאת כל העם אלה

And he said to them, Why do you according to this thing, which I hear from the mouth of all the people of the Lord?

24 אל בני כי לוא טובה השמעה אשר אנכי שמע מעברים עם יהוה

Nay [my] sons, for the report which I hear [is] not good; do not so, for the reports which I hear [are] not good, so that the people do not serve God.

25 אם יחטא איש לאיש ופללו אלהים ואם ליהוה יחטא איש מי יתפלל לו ולא ישמעו לקול אביהם כי חפץ יהוה להמיתם

If a man should at all sin against another, then shall they pray for him to the Lord; but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall entreat for him? But they listened not to the voice of their father, because the Lord would by all means destroy them.

26 והנער שמואל הלך וגדל וטוב גם עם יהוה וגם עם אנשים

And the child Samuel advanced, and was in favor with God and with men.

27 ויבא איש אלהים אל עלי ויאמר אליו כה אמר יהוה הנגלה נגליתי אל בית אביך בהיותם במצרים לבית פרעה

And a man of God came to Heli, and said, Thus says the Lord, I plainly revealed myself to the house of your father, when they were servants in Egypt to the house of Pharao.

28 ובחר אתו מכל שבטי ישראל לי לכהן לעלות על מזבחי להקטיר קטרת לשאת אפוד לפני ואתנה לבית אביך את כל אשי בני ישראל

And I chose the house of your father out of all the tribes of Israel to minister to me in the priest's office, to go up to my altar, and to burn incense, and to wear an ephod. And I gave to the house of your father all the offerings by fire of the children of Israel for food.

29 למה תבעטו בזבחי ובמנחתי אשר צויתי מעון ותכבד את בניך ממני להבריאכם מראשית כל מנחת ישראל לעמי

And therefore have you looked upon my incense-offering and my meat-offering with a shameless eye, and have honored your sons above me, so that they should bless themselves with the first fruits of every sacrifice of Israel before me?

30 לכן נאם יהוה אלהי ישראל אמור אמרתי ביתך ובית אביך יתהלכו לפני עד עולם ועתה נאם יהוה חלילה לי כי מכבדי אכבד ובזי יקלו

Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel, I said, Your house and the house of your father shall pass before me for ever: but now the Lord says, That be far from me; for I will only honor them that honor me, and he that sets me at nothing shall be despised.

31 הנה ימים באים וגדעתי את זרעך ואת זרע בית אביך--מהיות זקן בביתך

Behold, the days come when I will destroy your seed and the seed of your father's house.

32 והבטת צר מעון בכל אשר ייטיב את ישראל ולא יהיה זקן בביתך כל הימים

And you shall not have an old man in my house for ever.

33 ואיש לא אכרית לך מעם מזבחי לכלות את עיניך ולאדיב את נפשך וכל מרבית ביתך ימותו אנשים

And [if] I do not destroy a man of your from my altar, [it shall be] that his eyes may fail and his soul may perish; and every one that remains in your house shall fall by the sword of men.

34 וזה לך האות אשר יבא אל שני בניך--אל חפני ופינחס ביום אחד ימותו שניהם

And this which shall come upon your two sons Ophni and Phinees shall be a sign to you; in one day they shall both die.

35 והקימתי לי כהן נאמן כאשר בלבבי ובנפשי יעשה ובניתי לו בית נאמן והתהלך לפני משיחי כל הימים

And I will raise up to myself a faithful priest, who shall do all that is in my heart and in my soul; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before my Christ for ever.

36 והיה כל הנותר בביתך יבוא להשתחות לו לאגורת כסף וככר לחם ואמר ספחני נא אל אחת הכהנות--לאכל פת לחם

And it shall come to pass that he that survives in your house, shall come to do obeisance before him for a little piece of silver, saying, Put me into one of your priest's offices to eat bread.
