< Lunakanawai 8 >

1 OLELO aku la na kanaka o Eperaima ia ia, Heaha keia mea au i hana mai ai ia makou, i kou hea ole ana mai ia makou, i kou wa i hele aku ai e kaua me ko Midiana? Ikaika loa ko lakou hoopaapaa ana ia ia.
And the men of Ephraim say to him, “What [is] this thing you have done to us—not to call for us when you went to fight with Midian?” And they strive with him severely;
2 Olelo ae la oia ia lakou, Heaha ka'u i hana'i me ka oukou? Aole anei i oi ke koena ai no Eperaima mamua o ka hoiliili ana o ka Abiezera?
and he says to them, “What have I now done like you? Are the gleanings of Ephraim not better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?
3 Ua haawi mai ke Akua i ko oukou lima i na'lii o Midiana, o Oreba, a me Zeeba. Heaha ka mea i hiki ia'u ke hana e like me ka oukou? Alaila, i kana olelo ana pela, maha ae la ko lakou huhu ia ia.
God has given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, into your hand; and what have I been able to do like you?” Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.
4 Hele mai la o Gideona i Ioredane, a maalo ae la i kela aoao, oia a me ia mau haneri kanaka ekolu pu me ia, ua makaponiuniu, e hahai ana nae.
And Gideon comes to the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who [are] with him—wearied, yet pursuing—
5 I ae la ia i kanaka o Sukota, Ke nonoi aku nei au ia oukou, e haawi mai i mau popo berena na ka poe e hahai ana ia u; no ka mea, ua makaponiuniu lakou, a e hahai ana au ia Zeba, a me Zalemuna, i na'lii o ko Midiana.
and he says to the men of Succoth, “Please give cakes of bread to the people who [are] at my feet, for they [are] wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.”
And the heads of Succoth say, “Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we give bread to your host?”
7 I ae la o Gideona, No ia mea, i ka wa e haawi mai ai o Iehova ia Zeba, laua o Zalemuna, i ko'u lima, alaila e kahi au i ko oukou io i ke kakalaioa a me na mea ooi o ka nahelehele.
And Gideon says, “Therefore—in YHWH’s giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand—I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.”
I mai la na kanaka o Penuela ia ia, e like me ka na kanaka o Sukota i i mai ai.
And he goes up there [to] Penuel, and speaks to them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.
9 Olelo ae la ia i na kanaka o Penuela, i aku la, A hoi mai au me ka malu, alaila, e wawahi au i keia halekiai.
And he also speaks to the men of Penuel, saying, “In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.”
Ua haule hookahi haneri me ka iwakalua tausani kanaka, unuhi pahi.
And Zebah and Zalmunna [are] in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling [are] one hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.
11 Pii aku la o Gideona ma ke ala o ka poe noho ma na halelewa, ma ka hikina o Noba, a me Iogebeha, a luku aku la i ka puali; no ka mea, e noho makau ole ana ka puali.
And Gideon goes up the way of those who dwell in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and strikes the camp, and the camp was confident;
12 Hee aku la o Zeba, laua o Zalemuna, a hahai aku la ia ia laua, a pio iho la ia ia na'lii elua o Midiana, o Zeba a me Zalemuna, a auhee aku la ka puali a pau.
and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursues after them, and captures the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and he has caused all the camp to tremble.
13 Hoi mai la o Gideona, ke keiki a Ioasa, mai ke kaua ana mai, mamua o ka hiki ana a ka la.
And Gideon son of Joash turns back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,
14 Paa iho la ia ia kekahi kanaka ui o Sukota, a ninau aku la ia ia, a hoike mai la oia ia ia i na'lii o Sukota a me kolaila poe lunakahiko, he kanahikukumamahiku kanaka.
and captures a young man of the men of Succoth, and asks him, and he describes to him the heads of Succoth, and its elderly—seventy-seven men.
15 Hele mai la ia i kanaka o Sukota, i ae la, Eia hoi o Zeba, laua o Zalemuna, na mea a oukou i hoowahawaha mai ai ia'u, i ka i ana mai, Ua loaa anei na lima o Zeba laua o Zalemuna i kou lima, i haawi aku ai makou i ka berena na kou poe kanaka makaponiuniu?
And he comes to the men of Succoth and says, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom you reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand that we give bread to your men who [are] wearied?”
16 Lalau iho la ia i na lunakahiko o ia kulanakauhale, a me ke kakalaioa, a me na mea oioi o ka nahelehele, a me ia mau mea no ia i ao aku ai i na kanaka o Sukota.
And he takes the elderly of the city, and [the] thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teaches the men of Succoth by them,
17 Wawahi iho la no hoi ia i ka halekiai o Penuela, a luku aku la i kanaka o ia kulanakauhale.
and he has broken down the Tower of Penuel, and slays the men of the city.
I mai la laua, E like me oe nei, pela lakou. Ua like lakou a pau me na keiki alii.
And he says to Zebah and to Zalmunna, “What manner of men [were they] whom you slew in Tabor?” And they say, “As you—so they, [each] one as the form of the king’s sons.”
19 I aku la keia, he poe hoahanau lakou no'u, he poe keiki na ko'u makuwahine. Me Iehova e ola nei, ina i hoola olua ia lakou, ina aole au e pepehi aku ia olua.
And he says, “They [were] my brothers—sons of my mother; YHWH lives, if you had kept them alive—I would not kill you.”
20 I mai la ia ia Ietera, i kana hiapo, E ku iluna, a pepehi ia laua. Aole unuhi ua keiki la i kana pahikaua; ua makau, no ka mea, he keiki ia.
And he says to his firstborn Jether, “Rise, slay them”; and the young man has not drawn his sword, for he has been afraid, for he [is] yet a youth.
21 Alaila, olelo mai o Zeba laua o Zalemuna, E ku mai oe, a e pepehi mai ia maua, no ka mea, e like me ke kanaka, pela kona ikaika. Ku ae la o Gideona, a pepehi iho la ia Zeba, laua o Zalemuna, a lawe oia i na lei o na a-i o ka laua mau kamelo.
And Zebah and Zalmunna say, “Rise and fall on us; for as the man—his might”; and Gideon rises, and slays Zebah and Zalmunna, and takes the crescents which [are] on the necks of their camels.
22 Alaila, olelo aku la na kanaka o ka Iseraela ia Gideona, I alii oe maluna o makou, o oe a me kau keiki, a me ke keiki a kau keiki; no ka mea, ua hoola mai oe ia makou, mailoko ae o ka lima o ko Midiana.
And the men of Israel say to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you, and your son, and your son’s son, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”
23 I mai la o Gideona ia lakou, aole au e lilo i alii maluna o oukou, aole e lilo ka'u keiki i alii maluna o oukou. E lilo no o Iehova i alii maluna o oukou.
And Gideon says to them, “I do not rule over you, nor does my son rule over you; YHWH rules over you.”
(He apo pepeiao gula ko lakou, no ka mea, no ka Isemaela lakou.)
And Gideon says to them, “Let me ask a petition of you, and each give to me the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they [are] Ishmaelites.”
25 I mai la lakou, E haawi io no makou. Hohola iho la lakou i lole, a hoolei iho la kela kanaka keia kanaka i na apo pepeiao o kona pio maluna iho.
And they say, “We certainly give”; and they spread out the garment, and each casts the ring of his prey there;
26 O ke kaumaha o ia mau apo pepeiao, ana i noi aku ai, hookahi ia tausani ehiku haueri sekela gula; a keu aku na lei, a me na momi pepeiao, a me ka lole poni mahana o na'lii o ko Midiana, a me na lei ma na a-i o ka laua mau kamelo.
and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked for is one thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, apart from the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple garments, which [are] on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which [are] on the necks of their camels,
Hahai aku la ilaila ka Iseraela a pau, e kuko ana mamuli o ia mea; a lilo iho la ia i mea e hihia'i no Gideona, a me ko kona hale.
and Gideon makes it into an ephod, and sets it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go whoring after it there, and it is for a snare to Gideon and to his house.
28 Pela i pio ai ko Midiana imua o na mamo a Iseraela, aole lakou i hoala hou i ko lakou poo. Kuapapanui iho la ka aina hookahi kanaha makahiki, i ke kau ia Gideona.
And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land rests [for] forty years in the days of Gideon.
And Jerubba‘al son of Joash goes and dwells in his own house,
30 He kanahiku ka Gideona mau keikikane, mailoko aku o kona puhaka, no ka mea, ua nui loa kana poe wahine.
and there have been seventy sons of Gideon, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;
and his concubine, who [is] in Shechem, has borne to him—even she—a son, and he appoints his name Abimelech.
32 Make iho la o Gideona ke keiki a Ioasa, ua elemakule maikai, a kanuia oia ma ka ilina o kona makuakane, ma Opera, no ka Abiezara.
And Gideon son of Joash dies, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of his father Joash, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.
33 A mahope iho o ka make ana o Gideona, huli hou aku la na mamo a Iseraela, a moe kolohe iho la me Baalima, a hoolilo iho la ia Baalaberita, i akua no lakou.
And it comes to pass, when Gideon [is] dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go whoring after the Ba‘alim, and set Ba‘al-Berith over them for a god;
34 Aole hoomanao na mamo a Iseraela ia Iehova, i ko lakou Akua, i ka mea i hoola'e ia lakou mai ka lima aku o ko lakou poe enemi, ma na aoao a puni.
and the sons of Israel have not remembered their God YHWH, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their surrounding enemies,
35 Aole lakou i lokomaikai aku i ko ka hale o Ierubaala, oia hoi o Gideona, e like me na mea maikai a pau ana i hana mai ai i ka Iseraela.
neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubba‘al—Gideon—according to all the good which he did with Israel.
