< Iosua 8 >
E lawe pu oe i na kanaka kaua a pau me oe, a e ku iluna, a e pii aku ia Ai. E nana hoi, ua haawi aku au iloko o kou lima, i ke alii o Ai a me kona kanaka a me kona kulanakauhale, a me kona aina.
And YHWH says to Joshua, “Do not fear, nor be frightened, take with you all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land,
2 A e hana oe ia Ai, a me kona alii, me oe i hana'i ia Ieriko a me kona alii. Aka, o ko laila waiwai pio, a me ko laila bipi, e lawe ia mau mea i waiwai pio no oukou.
and you have done to Ai and to her king as you have done to Jericho and to her king; only spoil its spoil and its livestock for yourselves; for you set an ambush for the city at its rear.”
3 Ku ae la o Iosua a me na kanaka kaua a pau e pii aku i Ai. Wae mai la o Iosua i kanakolu tausani kanaka, he poe koa loa, a hoouna ia lakou i ka po.
And Joshua rises, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai, and Joshua chooses thirty thousand men, mighty men of valor, and sends them away by night,
and commands them, saying, “See, you are ones lying in wait against the city, at the rear of the city, you do not go very far off from the city, and all of you have been prepared,
5 A owau a me na kanaka a pau pu me au, e hookokoke aku makou i ke kulanakauhale; a hiki i ka wa e puka mai ai lakou iwaho, e hoouka e like me ka wa mamua, a e hee makou imua o lakou,
and I and all the people who [are] with me draw near to the city, and it has come to pass, when they come out to meet us as at the first, and we have fled before them,
6 (E puka mai no lakou iwaho, mahope o makou, ) a e kai mai no makou ia lakou, ma kahi loihi loa mai o ia kulanakauhale; no ka mea, e olelo auanei lakou, Ua hee lakou imua o kakou e like mamua; a e hee no makou imua o lakou.
and they have come out after us until we have drawn them out of the city, for they say, They are fleeing before us as at the first, and we have fled before them,
Ua haawi mai no o Iehova ia wahi iloko o ko oukou lima.
and you rise from the ambush, and have occupied the city, and your God YHWH has given it into your hand;
8 A loaa ia oukou ua kulanakauhale la, alaila, e puhi i na hale i ke ahi. E like me ka olelo a Iehova, pela oukou e hana'i. E nana hoi, ua kauoha aku au ia oukou.
and it has been, when you capture the city, you burn the city with fire, you do according to the word of YHWH, see, I have commanded you.”
Ia po, moe pu iho la o Iosua me na kanaka.
And Joshua sends them away, and they go to the ambush, and abide between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai; and Joshua lodges on that night in the midst of the people.
10 Ala mai la o Iosua i ke kakahiaka, a helu iho la i na kanaka, a pii aku la oia a me na lunakahiko o ka Iseraela, imua o na kanaka i Ai.
And Joshua rises early in the morning, and inspects the people, and goes up, he and [the] elderly of Israel, before the people to Ai;
11 Pii pu aku la me ia kona poe a pau i makaukau i ke kaua, a neenee aku la, a hiki ma ke alo o ia kulanakauhale, a hoomoana iho la ma ka aoao akau o Ai. He awawa hoi mawaena o lakou a me Ai.
and all the people of war who [are] with him have gone up, and draw near and come in before the city, and encamp on the north of Ai; and the valley [is] between him and Ai.
And he takes about five thousand men, and sets them [for] an ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city;
and they set the people, all the camp which [is] on the north of the city, and its rear on the west of the city, and that night Joshua goes on into the midst of the valley.
14 A ike mai la ke alii o Ai, wikiwiki ae la lakou, a ala koke iho la, a puka mai la na kanaka o ke kulanakauhale iwaho e kaua me ka Iseraela, oia a me kona kanaka a pau, ma kahi i olelo mua ia, ma ke kula; aole hoi i ike he poe hoohalua kekahi, ma ke kua o ke kulanakauhale.
And it comes to pass, when the king of Ai sees [it], that he hurries, and rises early, and the men of the city go out to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed time, at the front of the plain, and he has not known that an ambush [is] against him, on the rear of the city.
15 Hana iho la o Iosua a me ka Iseraela me he poe hee la imua o lakou, a holo aku la ma ke ala e hiki aku ai i ka waonahele.
And Joshua and all Israel [seem] struck before them, and flee the way of the wilderness,
and all the people who [are] in the city are called to pursue after them, and they pursue after Joshua, and are drawn away out of the city,
17 Aole i koe kekahi kanaka ma Ai, a me Betela, i hahai ole aku i ka Iseraela. Waiho hamama wale lakou i ke kulanakauhale, a hahai aku la i ka Iseraela.
and there has not been a man left in Ai and Bethel who has not gone out after Israel, and they leave the city open, and pursue after Israel.
And YHWH says to Joshua, “Stretch out with the javelin which [is] in your hand toward Ai, for I give it into your hand”; and Joshua stretches out with the javelin which [is] in his hand toward the city,
19 Ku koke mai la ka poe hoohalua, mai ko lakou wahi mai, a i ka o ana aku o kona lima, holo kiki aku la a komo iloko o ke kulanakauhale, hoopio iho la, a wikiwiki a puhi aku la i ke kanhale i ke ahi.
and the ambush has risen [with] haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hurry, and burn the city with fire.
And the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and behold, the smoke of the city has gone up to the heavens, and there has not been power in them to flee here and there—and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer—
21 A ike aku la o Iosua, a me ka Iseraela a pau, ua pio ke kulanakauhale i ka poe hoohalua, a ua punohu aku la ka uwahi o ke kulanakauhale, alaila huli hou lakou a luku aku la i kanaka no Ai.
and Joshua and all Israel have seen that the ambush has captured the city, and that the smoke of the city has gone up, and they turn back and strike the men of Ai;
and these have come out from the city to meet them, and they are in the midst of Israel, some on this [side], and some on that [side], and they strike them until he has not left a remnant and escaped one to them;
23 A loaa ola ia lakou ke alii o Ai, a kai mai la lakou ia ia io Iosua la.
and they have caught the king of Ai alive, and bring him near to Joshua.
24 A pau ae la na kanaka o Ai i ka lukuia e ka Iseraela ma ke kula, a ma ka waonahele, ma kahi a lakou i hahai aku ai. A haule iho la lakou a pau i ka maka o ka pahikaua a make. Alaila, hoi aku la ka Iseraela a pau i Ai, a luku aku la, me ka maka o ka pahikaua.
And it comes to pass, at Israel’s finishing to slay all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them (and all of them fall by the mouth of the sword until their consumption), that all of Israel turns back to Ai, and strikes it by the mouth of the sword;
25 A o ka poe a pau i haule ia la, o ua kane a me na wahine, he umikumamalua tausani o lakou, o na kanaka hoi a pau o Ai.
and all who fall during the day, of men and of women, are twelve thousand—all men of Ai.
26 Aole i hoihoi mai o Iosua i kona lima, ana i o aku ai me ka ihe, a pau na kanaka o Ai i ka lukuia e ia.
And Joshua has not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin until he has devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;
27 Aka o na holoholona, a me ka waiwai pio o ia kulanakauhale, oia ka Iseraela mea i lawe, i waiwai pio no lakou, e like me ka olelo a Iehova, ana i kauoha mai ai ia Iosua.
only the livestock and the spoil of that city has Israel spoiled for themselves, according to the word of YHWH which He commanded Joshua.
28 Puhi iho la o Iosua ia Ai, a hoolilo iho la ia wahi i puu mau loa, i wahi olohelohe wale, a hiki mai i keia la.
And Joshua burns Ai, and makes it a continuous heap—a desolation to this day;
29 Kaawe no hoi ia i ke alii o Ai ma ka laau a hiki i ke ahiahi; a napoo ka la, kauoha ae la o Iosua e kuu i kona kupapau mailuna mai o ka laau, a e kiola ma ka ipuka e komo aku ai i ke kulanakauhale; a hoahu iho la lakou i ahu pohaku nui, a hiki mai i neia la.
and he has hanged the king of Ai on the tree until evening, and at the going in of the sun Joshua has commanded, and they take down his carcass from the tree, and cast it to the opening of the gate of the city, and raise a great heap of stones over it until this day.
30 Alaila, hana iho la o Iosua i kuahu no Iehova, no ke Akua o ka Iseraela, ma ka mauna ma Ebala,
Then Joshua builds an altar to YHWH, God of Israel, in Mount Ebal,
31 E like me ka Mose, ke kauwa a Iehova i kauoha mai ai i na mamo a Iseraela, e like hoi me ka mea i palapalaia iloko o ka buke o ke kanawai o Mose, he kuahu pohaku i kalai ole ia; aole hoi i kauia ka hao maluna iho. Kaumaha aku la lakou maluna iho i na mohaikuni ia Iehova, a kalua iho la i na mohaihoomalu.
as Moses, servant of YHWH, commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the Scroll of the Law of Moses—an altar of whole stones, over which he has not waved iron—and they cause burnt-offerings to go up on it to YHWH, and sacrifice peace-offerings;
32 Palapala hou iho la ia malaila, ma na pohaku, i ke kanawai a Mose, ana i palapala ai imua i ke alo o na mamo a Iseraela.
and he writes there on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which he has written in the presence of the sons of Israel.
33 Ku mai la ka Iseraela a pau, a me na lunakahiko, a me na'lii, a me na lunakanawai o lakou, ma keia aoao a ma kela aoao o ka pahu, imua o ke alo o na kahuna o na mamo a Levi, ka poe i lawe i ka pahuberita o Iehova, o ka malihini a me ke keikipapa: o ka hapalua o lakou ma ke alo o ka mauna o Gerizima, a o ka hapalua ma ke alo o ka mauna o Ebala; e like me ke kauoha mua ana mai a Mose, ke kauwa a Iehova, e hoomaikai lakou i kanaka o ka Iseraela.
And all Israel, and its elderly, and authorities, and his judges, are standing on this [side] and on that [side] of the Ark, before the priests, the Levites, carrying the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH, the sojourner as well as the native, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and the half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses servant of YHWH had commanded to bless the people of Israel at the first.
34 A mahope iho, heluhelu iho la ia i ka olelo a pau o ke kanawai, o ka hoomaikai ana a me ka hoino ana, e like me na mea a pau i palapalaia ma ka buke o ke kanawai.
And afterward he has proclaimed all the words of the Law, the blessing and the reviling, according to all that is written in the Scroll of the Law;
35 Aole i koe kekahi o na olelo a pau, a Mose i kauoha mai ai; ua pau i ka heluheluia e Iosua, imua o ke anaina a pau o ka Iseraela, a me na wahine pu, a me na kamalii, a me na malihini, i hele pu me lakou.
there has not been a thing of all that Moses commanded which Joshua has not proclaimed before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the infants, and the sojourner who is going in their midst.
