Iona 1

1 A HIKI mai ka olelo a Iehova ia Iona, ke keiki a Amitai, i mai la,

And the word of Yahweh came unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:

2 E ku oe, e hele i Nineva, i kela kulanakauhale nui, e kahea aku ia ia; no ka mea, ua pii mai ko lakou hewa imua o'u.

Arise, get thee to Nineveh the great city, and proclaim unto it, —that their wickedness, hath come up, before me.

3 Aka, ku ae la o Iona e holo i Taresisa, mai ke alo aku o Iehova, a iho aku la i Iopa; a loaa ia ia ka moku e holo ana i Taresisa: a haawi aku ia i ka uku, a komo iho la ia iloko ona e holo pu me lakou i Taresisa mai ke alo aku o Iehova.

But Jonah arose to flee unto Tarshish, away from the presence of Yahweh, —and went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of Yahweh.

4 A hoouna mai o Iehova i ka makani nui ma ke kai, a he ino nui ma ke kai, a aneane nahaha ka moku.

But, Yahweh, hurled a great wind against the sea, —and, there arose a mighty tempest in the sea, —and, the ship, thought to be broken in pieces,

5 Alaila, makau iho la na hooholo moku, a kahea aku kela kanaka keia kanaka i kona akua, a hoolei ka waiwai ma ka moku iloko o ke kai, e hoomama i ka moku no ia mau mea. A ua iho o Iona ilalo i ka aoao hope o ka moku, a moe iho, a ua pauhia i ka hiamoe.

Then were the mariners, afraid, and made outcry every man unto his own god, and they hurled the wares which were in the ship, into the sea, to lighten it of them, —but, Jonah, had gone down into the hinder parts of the vessel, and had lain down, and fallen into a sound sleep.

6 A hele aku ke kahu moku ia ia, a i aku la ia ia, Heaha kau, e ka mea hiamoe? e ala, e hea aku i kou Akua, malia paha e manao mai ke Akua ia kakou i make ole ai kakou.

Then drew near unto him the shipmaster, and said to him, What meanest thou, O sound sleeper? Arise, cry unto thy God, Peradventure God will bethink himself of us, that we perish not.

And they said—every one unto his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may get to know for whose sake this calamity is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8 Alaila, i aku la lakou ia ia, Ke noi aku nei makou, e hai mai oe ia makou i ka mea nona i hiki mai ai keia ino maluna o kakou? Heaha kau oihana? Mai hea mai oe? Owai kou aina? a no ka lahuikanaka hea oe?

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose sake this calamity is upon us? What is thy business? and from whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

And he said unto them, A Hebrew, am I, —and, Yahweh, the God of the heavens, do, I, revere, him who made the sea, and the dry land.

10 Alaila, makau iho la na kanaka i ka makau nui, a i aku la ia ia, No ke aha la oe i hana mai ai i keia? No ka mea, ua ike na kanaka, ua holo ia mai ke alo aku o Iehova, no ka mea, ua hai mai kela ia lakou.

Then did the men revere with great reverence, and said unto him, What is it thou hast done? For the men knew that, away from the presence of Yahweh, he was fleeing, —for he had told them.

11 Alaila, i aku la lakou ia ia, Heaha ka makou e hana aku ai ia oe, i malie iho ai ke kai no kakou? no ka mea, ua nui ae ka inoino o ke kai.

Then said they unto him, What shall we de to thee, that the sea may cease raging over us? For, the sea, was raging more and more.

12 A i mai la kela ia lakou, E lawe oukou ia'u, a e kiola ia'u iloko o ke kai, a e malie iho ke kai ia oukou: no ka mea, ua ike au, no'u nei i hiki mai ai keia ino nui maluna o oukou.

And he said unto them, Take me up, and hurl me into the sea, that the sea may cease raging over you, —for I do know that, for my sake, is this great tempest upon you.

13 A hoe ikaika aku la na kanaka e hoi hou i ka aina; aole lakou e hiki: no ka mea, ua nui ae ka inoino o ke kai ia lakou.

Nevertheless the men, wrought hard, to bring it back unto the land, but could not, —for, the sea, was raging over them more and more.

14 No ia mea, kahea aku la lakou ia Iehova, i aku la, Ke noi aku nei makou ia oe, e Iehova, ke noi aku nei makou, mai lukuia makou no ke ola o keia kanaka, a mai hoopai ia makou i ke koko hala ole: no ka mea, ua hana mai oe, e Iehova, e like me kou makemake.

Then cried they unto Yahweh, and said, Ah now, Yahweh, pray let it not be that we perish for this man’s life, neither lay upon us innocent blood, —for, thou, O Yahweh, as thou hast pleased, hast ever done.

15 Nolaila, kaikai ae la lakou ia Iona a kiola aku la ia ia iloko o ke kai: e malie iho la ke kai mai kona kupikipikio ana.

So they took up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, —and the sea, left off, her roaring.

16 Alaila, makau nui loa iho la na kanaka ia Iehova, a kaumaha aku lakou i mohai ia Iehova, a hoohiki i na hoohiki ana.

Then did the men revere Yahweh with a great reverence, —and offered sacrifice to Yahweh, and vowed vows.

17 A ua hoomakaukau o Iehova i ia nui e ale iho ia Iona. A ekolu ao, a ekolu po o Iona ileko o ka opu o ka ia.

Now Yahweh had appointed a great fish, to swallow up Jonah, —and Jonah was in the belly of the fish, three days and three nights.
