1 A HIKI o Rehoboama i Ierusalema, hoakoakoa ae la ia i ka ohana a Iuda a me Beniamina, hookahi haneri a me kanawalu tausani kanaka ui, he poe koa, e kaua aku i ka Iseraela, e hoihoi mai i ke aupuni ia Rehoboama.
And when Rehoboam had entered Jerusalem, he called together the house of Judah and Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, warriors, —to fight against Israel, to bring back the kingdom to Rehoboam.

Then came the word of Yahweh, unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying:
3 E olelo aku oe ia Rehoboama i ke keiki a Solomona i ke alii o ka Iuda, a i ka poe mamo a Iseraela a pau ma Iuda a me Beniamina, e i aku,
Speak unto Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, —and unto all Israel in Judah and in Benjamin, saying:
4 Penei ka olelo a Iehova, Mai pii aku oukou, aole hoi oukou e kaua aku i ko oukou poe hoahanau; e hoi kela kanaka keia kanaka i kona hale iho; no ka mea, na'u aku neia mea: a lohe lakou a pau i ka olelo a Iehova, a hoi lakou mai ko lakou hele ana aku e kaua ia Ieroboama.
Thus, saith Yahweh, Ye shall not go up neither shall ye fight against your brethren, return every man to his own house, for, from me, hath this thing been brought about. So they hearkened unto the words of Yahweh, and turned back from going against Jeroboam.

And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, —and built cities for defence, in Judah;

yea he built Bethlehem and Etam, and Tekoa;
7 A me Betazura, a me Soko, a me Adulama,
and Beth-zur and Soco, and Adullam;
8 A me Gata, a me Anaresa, a me Zipa,
and Gath and Mareshah, and Ziph;
9 A me Adoraima, a me Lakisa, a me Azeka,
and Adoraim and Lachish, and Azekah;
10 A me Zora, a me Aialona, a me Heberona, aia no ma Iuda, a ma Beniamina, he mau kulanakauhale paa i ka pa.
and Zorah, and Aijalon and Hebron, which are in Judah and Benjamin, —as fortified cities.

And he strengthened the fortified places, —and put therein captains, and stores of food, and oil and wine;
12 A iloko o kela kulanakauhale keia kulanakauhale, waiho iho la ia i na palekaua, a me na ihe, hana iho la oia malaila a paa loa, a ia ia o Iuda a me Beniamina ma kona aoao.
and, in every several city, shields and spears, and made them exceedingly strong, —thus Judah and Benjamin remained his.

And, the priests and Levites that were in all Israel, took their stand with him, out of all their boundaries.

For the Levites left their pasture lands, and their possessions, and came to Judah, and to Jerusalem, —for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, from ministering as priests unto Yahweh;

and appointed for himself priests for the high places, and for the demons—and for the calves which he had made.
16 A mahope o keia mau mea, o ka poe a pau noloko o na ohana a pau o ka Iseraela i haawi aku i ko lakou mau naau e imi ia Iehova ke Akua o ka Iseraela, hele mai lakou i Ierusalema e mohai aku ia Iehova, i ke Akua o ko lakou poe kupuna.
And, after them—out of all the tribes of Israel, such as were setting their heart to seek Yahweh God of Israel, came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto Yahweh, God of their fathers.

So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and emboldened Rehoboam son of Solomon, for three years, —for they walked in the way of David and Solomon, for three years.
18 A lawe iho la o Rehoboama i wahine nana, ia Mehalata, i ke kaikamahine a Ieremota, ke keiki a Davida, a me Abehaila, ke kaikamahine a Eliaba ke keiki a Iese.
And Rehoboam took him to wife, Mahalath, daughter of Jerimoth, son of David, —and Abihail, daughter of Eliab, son of Jesse;
19 A hanau mai oia nana i na keiki, o Ieusa, me Samaria, a me Zahama.
and she bare him sons, —Jeush and Shamariah and Zaham.
20 A mahope iho, lawe oia ia Maaka i ke kaikamahine a Abesaloma; a hanau mai oia nana o Abiia, a me Atai, a me Ziza. a me Silomita.
And, after her, he took Maacah, daughter of Absolom, —and she bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21 Aloha iho la o Rehoboama ia Maaka i ke kaikamahine a Abesaloma, mamua o kana mau wahine a pau, a me kana poe haiawahine; (no ka mea, aia no ia ia he umikumamawalu wahine, a me na haiawahine he kanaono; a hanau mai he iwakalua a me kumamawalu na keikikane, a me na kaikamahine he kanaono.)
And Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absolom, above all his wives and his concubines, for, eighteen wives, took he, and sixty concubines, —and begat twenty-eight sons, and sixty daughters.
22 Hoonoho iho la o Rehoboama ia Abiia i ke keiki a Maaka i luna mawaena o kona poe hoahanau, no ka hoalii aku ia ia.
So then Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah as head, to be chief ruler among his brethren, —yea that he might make him king.
23 A hana maalea iho la oia, a hoonoho liilii ia i kana poe keiki ma na aina a pau o Iuda a me Beniamina, a iloko o na kulanakauhale a pau i paa i ka pa, a haawi aku oia ia lakou i ka ai a nui. Makemake iho la ia i na wahine he nui loa.
So he took heed, and dispersed all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, unto all the fortified cities, and gave them food in abundance, —and asked a multitude of wives.
