My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbour, if thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger,
2 Ou te tonbe nan pèlen akoz pawòl a bouch ou, ou te kenbe menm, akoz pawòl bouch ou yo.
Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
3 Alò fè sa, fis mwen an, pou delivre tèt ou. Akoz ou te vin antre nan men a vwazen ou an, ale desann pou jennen vwazen ou an.
Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbour; go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbour.
4 Pa kite dòmi tonbe nan zye ou, ni somèy rive sou pòpyè zye ou.
Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 Chape tèt ou kon yon antilòp nan men a chasè, oswa zwazo a nan pelen moun lachas la.
Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Ale kote foumi, o parese. Veye abitid li yo e vin saj!
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Li menm, san pa gen chèf, ni ofisye, ni mèt,
Which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
8 kon prepare manje li nan gran sezon an e ranmase pwovizyon li nan rekòlt la.
Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Yon ti dòmi, yon ti somèy, yon ti pliye men ou yo pou repoze;
[Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 mizè ou va vin parèt sou ou tankou yon vagabon, e nesesite ou tankou yon nonm k ap pote zam.
So shall thy poverty come as a robber, and thy want as an armed man.
A worthless person, a man of iniquity; he walketh with a froward mouth;
13 ki bat zye li, ki fè siy ak pye li, ki pwente ak dwèt li;
He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he maketh signs with his fingers;
Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth evil continually; he soweth discord.
15 Pou sa, malè li va parèt sibitman; nan yon enstan li va kase nèt; e li p ap gen gerizon ditou.
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; on a sudden shall he be broken and that without remedy.
16 Gen sis bagay ke SENYÈ a rayi; wi sèt menm ki abominab devan l:
There be six things which the LORD hateth; yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:
17 Zye ògeye, yon lang k ap bay manti, avèk men ki vèse san inosan,
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;
18 Yon kè ki divize plan mechan yo, pye ki kouri vit pou jwenn mal,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief;
19 Yon fo temwen ki bay manti, ak yon moun ki gaye konfli pami frè yo.
A false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
20 Fis mwen an, swiv lòd a papa ou e pa abandone enstriksyon manman ou.
My son, keep the commandment of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Mare yo tout tan sou kè ou; mare yo nan kou ou.
Bind them continually upon thine heart, tie them about thy neck.
22 Lè ou mache toupatou, yo va gide ou. Lè ou dòmi, yo va veye sou ou. Epi lè ou leve, yo va pale avèk ou.
When thou walkest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 pou anpeche ou rive nan fanm movèz vi a, a lang glise de fanm adiltè a.
To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the stranger’s tongue.
25 Pa dezire bote li nan kè ou, ni kite li kapte ou avèk pòpyè zye li.
Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26 Paske akoz yon pwostitiye, yon gason redwi a yon mòso pen. Yon fanm adiltè fè lachase lavi presye.
For on account of a whorish woman [a man is brought] to a piece of bread: and the adulteress hunteth for the precious life.
27 Èske yon nonm kab mete dife poze antre janm li yo pou rad li pa brile?
Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Oswa èske yon nonm kab mache sou chabon limen, san ke pye l pa brile?
Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
So he that goeth in to his nieghbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished.
30 Pèsòn pa meprize yon vòlè kap vòlè pou l kab satisfè grangou.
Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry:
31 Men si pa aza, li jwenn li, la oblije repeye li sèt fwa.
But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he doeth it that would destroy his own soul.
33 L ap twouve blesi ak gwo wont, e repwòch li p ap efase menm.
Wounds and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 Paske jalouzi fè laraj nan yon nonm; li p ap fè gras nan jou vanjans lan.
For jealousy is the rage of a man; and he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 Li p ap dakò dedonmaje ak ranson, ni li p ap satisfè malgre ou fè li anpil kado.
He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
