1 Pandan Israël te rete nan Sittim, pèp la te kòmanse pwostitiye tèt yo avèk fi Moab yo.
And Israel sojourned in Sattin, and the people profaned itself by going a-whoring after the daughters of Moab.
And they called them to the sacrifices of their idols; and the people ate of their sacrifices, and worshipped their idols.
3 Konsa, Israël te vin jwenn yo menm avèk Baal Peor, e SENYÈ a te vin fache kont Israël.
And Israel consecrated themselves to Beel-phegor; and the Lord was very angry with Israel.
4 SENYÈ a te di a Moïse: “Pran tout chèf a pèp la e touye yo gwo lajounen devan SENYÈ a, pou gran kòlè a SENYÈ a kapab vire kite Israël.”
And the Lord said to Moses, Take all the princes of the people, and make them examples [of judgment] for the Lord in the face of the sun, and the anger of the Lord shall be turned away from Israel.
And Moses said to the tribes of Israel, Slay you every one his friend that is consecrated to Beel-phegor.
6 Alò, vwala, youn nan fis Israël yo te vini pou te mennen bay a fanmi li yo yon fanm Madyanit, devan zye Moïse e devan zye a tout kongregasyon fis Israël yo, pandan yo tout t ap kriye devan pòtay tant asanble a.
And, behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought his brother to a Madianitish woman before Moses, and before all the congregation of the children of Israel; and they were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of witness.
Li te pran yon frenn nan men l,
And Phinees the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose out of the midst of the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand,
8 epi li te ale dèyè Izrayelit la nan tant lan e li te frennen tranche kò yo toulède nèt, mesye Israël la ak fanm nan. Konsa gwo epidemi sou fis Israël yo te vin sispann.
and went in after the Israelitish man into the chamber, and pierced them both through, both the Israelitish man, and the woman through her womb; and the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
And those that died in the plague were four and twenty thousand.
10 Alò, SENYÈ a te pale avèk Moïse. Li te di:
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
11 “Phinées, fis a Éléazar, fis a Aaron, prèt la, te fè detounen kòlè Mwen vè fis Israël yo, akoz li te jalou avèk jalouzi pa Mwen an pami yo; epi konsa, Mwen pa t detwi fis Israël yo nan jalouzi pa Mwen an.
Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest has caused my wrath to cease from the children of Israel, when I was exceedingly jealous among them, and I did not consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12 “Pou sa pale: ‘Gade byen, Mwen bay li akò lapè Mwen.
Thus do you say [to him], Behold, I give him a covenant of peace:
13 Li va pou li avèk desandan apre li yo, yon akò pozisyon prèt pou tout tan, akoz ke li te jalou pou Bondye li a, e li te fè ekspiyasyon pou fis Israël yo.’”
and he and his seed after him shall have a perpetual covenant of priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.
Now the name of the struck Israelitish man, who was struck with the Madianitish woman, [was] Zambri son of Salmon, prince of a house of the tribe of Symeon.
And the name of the Madianitish woman who was struck, [was] Chasbi, daughter of Sur, a prince of the nation of Ommoth: it is a chief house among the people of Madiam.
16 Alò, SENYÈ a te pale avèk Moïse e te di:
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying,
17 “Se pou ou vin mechan avèk Madyanit yo, e frape yo;
Plague the Madianites as enemies, and strike them,
18 paske yo te mechan avèk nou avèk riz pa yo, avèk sila, yo twonpe nou nan zafè Peor la ak nan zafè Cozbi a, fi a chèf Madian an, sè ki te touye nan jou gwo epidemi an pou koz a Peor a.”
for they are enemies to you by the treachery wherein they ensnare you through Phogor, and through Chasbi their sister, daughter of a prince of Madiam, who was struck in the day of the plague because of Phogor.
