1 Pa fè grandizè pou sa ou pral fè denmen. Ou wè jòdi, ou pa konn denmen.
Don’t boast about tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring.
2 Kite lòt moun pale byen pou ou. Pa fè sa ou menm. Kite etranje fè lwanj pou ou. Pa janm fè lwanj tèt pa ou.
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.

Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
6 Lè yon zanmi ap rale zòrèy ou, se byen ou li vle wè. Men, lè yon lènmi ap pase men l' nan kou ou, se twonpe l'ap twonpe ou.
Faithful are the wounds of a 'ahav ·affectionate lover, friend·; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man who wanders from his home.

Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.
10 Pa janm bliye zanmi ou, ni zanmi papa ou. Lè zafè ou pa bon, pa al lakay frè ou. Yon bon vwazen pi bon pase yon frè ki lwen.
Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s friend. Don’t go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster: better is a neighbor who is near than a distant brother.
11 Pitit mwen, aprann gen bon konprann. Fè kè m' kontan. Konsa, m'a ka reponn moun k'ap kritike m' yo.
Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart, then I can answer my critics.
12 Moun ki gen konprann, lè li wè malè ap vin sou li, li wete kò l'. Moun sòt pote lestonmak li bay, epi se li ki peye sa.
A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.
13 Si yon moun sòt jouk pou li asepte bay pawòl li pou dèt yon etranje, se pou yo sezi ata rad ki sou li jouk lòt la peye.

He who blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse by him.
15 Yon fanm ki toujou ap chache kont, se tankou yon goutyè k'ap degoute lè lapli ap tonbe tout lajounen.
A continual dropping on a rainy day and a contentious wife are alike:
16 Si ou rive fè l' pe bouch li, w'a kenbe van ak men ou, w'a kenbe lwil ak dwèt ou tou!
restraining her is like restraining the wind, or like grasping oil in his right hand.
