Κατα Ιωαννην 9
1 Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς.
And passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,
2 Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες, Ῥαββί, τίς ἥμαρτεν, οὗτος ἢ οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ;
and His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?”
3 Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς, Οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ· ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ.
Jesus answered, “Neither this one sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God may be revealed in him;
4 Ἐμὲ δεῖ ἐργάζεσθαι τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πέμψαντός με ἕως ἡμέρα ἐστίν· ἔρχεται νύξ, ὅτε οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐργάζεσθαι.
it is necessary for Me to be working the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night comes when no one is able to work:
5 Ὅταν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ὦ, φῶς εἰμι τοῦ κόσμου.
when I am in the world, I AM [the] light of the world.”
6 Ταῦτα εἰπών, ἔπτυσε χαμαί, καὶ ἐποίησε πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος, καὶ ἐπέχρισε τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ,
Saying these things, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,
7 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ—ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται, Ἀπεσταλμένος. Ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο, καὶ ἦλθε βλέπων.
“Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,” which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and washed, and came seeing;
8 Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι τυφλὸς ἦν, ἔλεγον, Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν;
the neighbors, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, “Is this not he who is sitting and begging?”
9 Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν· ἄλλοι δὲ ὅτι Ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν. Ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐγώ εἰμι.
Others said, “This is he”; and others, “He is like to him”; he himself said, “I am [he].”
10 Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ, Πῶς ἀνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί;
They said, therefore, to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
11 Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν, Ἄνθρωπος λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησε, καὶ ἐπέχρισέ μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, καὶ εἶπέ μοι, Ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ, καὶ νίψαι. Ἀπελθὼν δὲ καὶ νιψάμενος, ἀνέβλεψα.
He answered and said, “A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight”;
12 Εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ, Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος; Λέγει, Οὐκ οἶδα.
they said, therefore, to him, “Where is that One?” He says, “I have not known.”
13 Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους, τόν ποτε τυφλόν.
They bring him who once [was] blind to the Pharisees,
14 Ἦν δὲ σάββατον ὅτε τὸν πηλὸν ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἀνέῳξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.
and it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
15 Πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν. Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέ μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, καὶ ἐνιψάμην, καὶ βλέπω.
Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed—and I see.”
16 Ἔλεγον οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές, Οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὐκ ἔστι παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ. Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον, Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν; Καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς.
Certain of the Pharisees therefore said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath”; others said, “How is a man—a sinful one—able to do such signs?” And there was a division among them.
17 Λέγουσι τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν, Σὺ τί λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἤνοιξέ σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς; Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι Προφήτης ἐστίν.
They said to the blind man again, “You—what do you say of Him—that He opened your eyes?”
18 Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι τυφλὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν, ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος,
And he said, “He is a prophet.” The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and received sight, until they called the parents of him who received sight,
19 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη; Πῶς οὖν ἄρτι βλέπει;
and they asked them, saying, “Is [this] your son, of whom you say that he was born blind? How then does he now see?”
20 Ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ αὐτοῖς οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπον, Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ἡμῶν, καὶ ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη·
His parents answered them and said, “We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
21 πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει, οὐκ οἴδαμεν· ἢ τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν· αὐτὸς ἡλικίαν ἔχει· αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε, αὐτὸς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λαλήσει.
and how he now sees, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; he is of age, ask him; he himself will speak concerning himself.”
22 Ταῦτα εἶπον οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους· ἤδη γὰρ συνετέθειντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, ἵνα ἐάν τις αὐτὸν ὁμολογήσῃ Χριστόν, ἀποσυνάγωγος γένηται.
His parents said these things, because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed together, that if anyone may confess Him—Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;
23 Διὰ τοῦτο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπον ὅτι Ἡλικίαν ἔχει, αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε.
because of this his parents said, “He is of age, ask him.”
24 Ἐφώνησαν οὖν ἐκ δευτέρου τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὃς ἦν τυφλός, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Δὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ· ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν.
They called, therefore, the man who was blind a second time, and they said to him, “Give glory to God, we have known that this Man is a sinner”;
25 Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν, Εἰ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν, οὐκ οἶδα· ἓν οἶδα, ὅτι τυφλὸς ὤν, ἄρτι βλέπω.
he answered, therefore, and said, “If He is a sinner—I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.”
26 Εἶπον δὲ αὐτῷ πάλιν, Τί ἐποίησέ σοι; Πῶς ἤνοιξέ σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
And they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
27 Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς, Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη, καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε. Τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν; Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι;
He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not hear; why do you wish to hear [it] again? Do you also wish to become His disciples?”
28 Ἐλοιδόρησαν αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπον, Σὺ εἶ μαθητὴς ἐκείνου· ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί.
They reviled him, therefore, and said, “You are His disciple, and we are Moses’ disciples;
29 Ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι Μωσῇ λελάληκεν ὁ Θεός· τοῦτον δὲ οὐκ οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν.
we have known that God has spoken to Moses, but this One—we have not known where He is from.”
30 Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν, ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστί, καὶ ἀνέῳξέ μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.
The man answered and said to them, “Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that you have not known where He is from, and He opened my eyes!
31 Οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι ἁμαρτωλῶν ὁ Θεὸς οὐκ ἀκούει· ἀλλ᾽ ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς ᾖ, καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ, τούτου ἀκούει.
And we have known that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone may be a worshiper of God, and may do His will, He hears him;
from the age it was not heard that anyone opened eyes of one who has been born blind; (aiōn g165)
33 Εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ, οὐκ ἠδύνατο ποιεῖν οὐδέν.
if this One were not from God, He were not able to do anything.”
34 Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος, καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς; Καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω.
They answered and said to him, “In sins you were born altogether, and you teach us?” And they cast him forth outside.
35 Ἤκουσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω· καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτόν, εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ;
Jesus heard that they cast him forth outside, and having found him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”
36 Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπε, Καὶ τίς ἐστι, Κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν;
He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”
37 Εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτόν, καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν.
And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He who is speaking with you is He”;
38 Ὁ δὲ ἔφη, Πιστεύω, Κύριε· καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ.
and he said, “I believe, Lord,” and worshiped Him.
39 Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον, ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσι, καὶ οἱ βλέποντες τυφλοὶ γένωνται.
And Jesus said, “I came to this world for judgment, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.”
40 Καὶ ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ ὄντες μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν;
And those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and they said to Him, “Are we also blind?”
41 Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε, οὐκ ἂν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν· νῦν δὲ λέγετε ὅτι Βλέπομεν· ἡ οὖν ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει.
Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you were not having had sin, but now you say—We see, therefore your sin remains.”
