< Κατα Ιωαννην 1 >

1 Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν ˚Θεόν, καὶ ˚Θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν ˚Θεόν.
The same was in the beginning with God.
3 Πάντα διʼ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν ὃ γέγονεν.
By Him were all things made, and without Him was not any one thing made that was made.
4 Ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 Καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει, καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν.
And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness attained it not.
6 Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ ˚Θεοῦ, ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John:
7 Οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν, ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν διʼ αὐτοῦ.
this man came for witness, that he might testify concerning the light, that through him all might believe.
8 Οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς, ἀλλʼ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός.
He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of the light.
9 Ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν, ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον, ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον.
The true light was that which enlightneth every man that cometh into the world.
10 Ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν, καὶ ὁ κόσμος διʼ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ ὁ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω.
He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and yet the world knew Him not:
11 Εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν, καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον.
yea, He came to his own peculiar right, and even his own people received Him not.
12 Ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν, ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα ˚Θεοῦ γενέσθαι, τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ,
But as many as received Him, to them granted He the privilege to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name;
13 οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων, οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς, οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς, ἀλλʼ ἐκ ˚Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν.
who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 Καὶ ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ, δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρός, πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, being full of grace and truth: and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father.
15 Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων, “Οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον, ‘Ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος, ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν.’”
Of Him did John bare witness, and publicly declared, saying, This was He of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for He was before me.
16 Ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ, ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος.
And of his fulness have we all received, even grace for grace.
17 Ὅτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη, ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια διὰ ˚Ἰησοῦ ˚Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο.
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ:
18 ˚Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε· μονογενὴς ˚Θεὸς, ὁ ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ Πατρὸς, ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο.
and though no one hath ever seen God, or can see Him: yet the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, hath made Him known.
19 Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου, ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας, ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν, “Σὺ τίς εἶ;”
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou?
20 Καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο, καὶ ὡμολόγησεν, ὅτι “Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ὁ ˚Χριστός.”
he confessed, and denied not; but declared openly, I am not the Christ.
21 Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν, “Τί οὖν; Σὺ Ἠλίας εἶ;” Καὶ λέγει, “Οὐκ εἰμί.” “Ὁ προφήτης εἶ σύ;” Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη, “Οὔ.”
And they asked him, What then? art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou a prophet? and he answered, No.
22 Εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ, “Τίς εἶ; Ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς. Τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ;”
Therefore said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us: What dost thou say of thy self?
23 Ἔφη, “Ἐγὼ ‘Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ: “Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν ˚Κυρίου”’, καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας ὁ προφήτης.”
and he said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," according to Esaias the prophet.
24 Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων.
Now they that were sent, were of the pharisees:
25 Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, “Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις, εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ ὁ ˚Χριστὸς, οὐδὲ Ἠλίας, οὐδὲ ὁ προφήτης;”
and they asked him, and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor a prophet?
26 Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰωάννης λέγων, “Ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι· μέσος ὑμῶν ἕστηκεν ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε,
John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
27 ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἄξιος, ἵνα λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος.”
that cometh after me, but is preferred before me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose.
28 Ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο, πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, ὅπου ἦν ὁ Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων.
These things passed at Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν ˚Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ λέγει, “Ἴδε, ὁ Ἀμνὸς τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ, ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου.
The next day John seeth Jesus coming towards him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.
30 Οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον, ‘Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ, ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν.’
This is He of whom I said, After me cometh a man, who is preferred before me: for He was before me.
31 Κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο, ἦλθον ἐγὼ ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων.”
And I knew Him not: but therefore came I baptizing with water, that He might be made known to Israel.
32 Καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάννης λέγων, ὅτι “Τεθέαμαι τὸ ˚Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπʼ αὐτόν.
And John testified saying, I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it abode upon Him.
33 Κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ ὁ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι, ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν, ‘Ἐφʼ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ ˚Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον ἐπʼ αὐτόν, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν ˚Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ.’
And I knew Him not: but He that sent me to baptize with water, said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, the same is he that baptizeth with the Holy Spirit.
34 Κἀγὼ ἑώρακα καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ.”
And I saw it, and therefore testified that this is the Son of God.
35 Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰωάννης, καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο.
The day following John was standing, (and two of his disciples, )
36 Καὶ ἐμβλέψας τῷ ˚Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει, “Ἴδε, ὁ Ἀμνὸς τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ!”
and looking upon Jesus as He was walking, he saith, "Behold the lamb of God."
37 Καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ λαλοῦντος, καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ ˚Ἰησοῦ.
And when the two disciples heard what he said, they followed Jesus.
38 Στραφεὶς δὲ ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς, καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας, λέγει αὐτοῖς, “Τί ζητεῖτε;” Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, “Ῥαββί” (ὃ λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον, “Διδάσκαλε”), “Ποῦ μένεις;”
And Jesus turning, and seeing them following Him, saith unto them, What do ye seek? They said unto Him, Rabbi (that is to say, Master, ) where is thine abode?
39 Λέγει αὐτοῖς, “Ἔρχεσθε καὶ ὄψεσθε.” Ἦλθαν οὖν καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ μένει, καὶ παρʼ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην· ὥρα ἦν ὡς δεκάτη.
He saith unto them, Come and see. And they came and saw where He dwelt, and abode with Him that day: and it was about the tenth hour.
40 Ἦν Ἀνδρέας ὁ ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου, εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάννου, καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ.
Now Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two that heard what John said, and thereupon followed Jesus.
41 Εὑρίσκει οὗτος πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, “Εὑρήκαμεν τὸν Μεσσίαν”, (ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον, “˚Χριστός”).
He first meeteth with his own brother Simon, and telleth him, "We have found the Messiah, which is to say, the Christ."
42 ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν ˚Ἰησοῦν. Ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ, ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, “Σὺ εἶ Σίμων ὁ υἱὸς Ἰωάννου, σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς”, (ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται, “Πέτρος”).
And Andrew brought him to Jesus: and Jesus looking at him said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonas, thou shalt be called Cephas; which is interpreted a stone.
43 Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν. Καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς, “Ἀκολούθει μοι.”
The day following Jesus had a mind to go out into Galilee, and meeting with Philip, saith unto him, Follow me.
44 Ἦν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδά, ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Ἀνδρέου καὶ Πέτρου.
Now Philip was of Bethsaida the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, “Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται, εὑρήκαμεν ˚Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ, τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ.”
Philip meeting Nathaniel, saith unto him, We have found Him, of whom Moses in the law, and of whom the prophets also wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Jeseph.
46 Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ, “Ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι;” Λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Φίλιππος, “Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε.”
And Nathaniel said unto him, Can any thing good come out of Nazareth? Philip replied, Come and see.
47 Εἶδεν ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ, “Ἴδε, ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλίτης ἐν ᾧ δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν.”
And when Jesus saw Nathaniel coming towards Him, He saith concerning him, "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile."
48 Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ, “Πόθεν με γινώσκεις;” Ἀπεκρίθη ˚Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, “Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι, ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν, εἶδόν σε.”
Nathaniel saith unto Him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered him, Before Philip called thee, I saw thee, when under the fig-tree.
49 Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ, “Ῥαββί, σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ, σὺ Βασιλεὺς εἶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ.”
Nathaniel replied, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the king of Israel.
50 Ἀπεκρίθη ˚Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, “Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς, πιστεύεις; Μείζω τούτων ὄψῃ.”
Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I told thee that I saw thee under the fig-tree, thou believest: thou shalt see greater things than these.
51 Καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, “Ἀμὴν, ἀμὴν, λέγω ὑμῖν, ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα, καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ ˚Θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου.”
And He saith unto him, Verily verily I say unto you, Ye shall hereafter see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
