Ιακωβου 2
1 Ἀδελφοί μου, μὴ ἐν προσωπολημψίαις ἔχετε τὴν πίστιν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τῆς δόξης.
My brothers, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.
2 ἐὰν γὰρ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς (τὴν *k*) συναγωγὴν ὑμῶν ἀνὴρ χρυσοδακτύλιος ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ, εἰσέλθῃ δὲ καὶ πτωχὸς ἐν ῥυπαρᾷ ἐσθῆτι
For if someone with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor person in filthy clothing also comes in;
3 (καὶ *ko*) ἐπιβλέψητε (δὲ *no*) ἐπὶ τὸν φοροῦντα τὴν ἐσθῆτα τὴν λαμπρὰν καὶ εἴπητε (αὐτῷ· *k*) σὺ κάθου ὧδε καλῶς, καὶ τῷ πτωχῷ εἴπητε· σὺ στῆθι ἐκεῖ ἢ κάθου (ὧδε *k*) ὑπὸ τὸ ὑποπόδιόν μου,
and you pay special attention to the one who wears the fine clothing, and say, "Sit here in a good place;" but you tell the poor person, "Stand there," or "Sit by my footstool."
4 (καὶ *ko*) οὐ διεκρίθητε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐγένεσθε κριταὶ διαλογισμῶν πονηρῶν;
Have you not discriminated among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 ἀκούσατε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί, οὐχ ὁ θεὸς ἐξελέξατο τοὺς πτωχοὺς (τῷ κόσμῳ *N(k)O*) (τούτου *k*) πλουσίους ἐν πίστει καὶ κληρονόμους τῆς βασιλείας ἧς ἐπηγγείλατο τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν;
Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?
6 ὑμεῖς δὲ ἠτιμάσατε τὸν πτωχόν. οὐχ οἱ πλούσιοι καταδυναστεύουσιν ὑμῶν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἕλκουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς κριτήρια;
But you have dishonored the poor person. Do not the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?
7 οὐκ αὐτοὶ βλασφημοῦσιν τὸ καλὸν ὄνομα τὸ ἐπικληθὲν ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς;
Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?
8 εἰ μέντοι νόμον τελεῖτε βασιλικὸν κατὰ τὴν γραφήν· ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν, καλῶς ποιεῖτε·
However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, "You are to love your neighbor as yourself," you do well.
9 εἰ δὲ προσωπολημπτεῖτε, ἁμαρτίαν ἐργάζεσθε ἐλεγχόμενοι ὑπὸ τοῦ νόμου ὡς παραβάται.
But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.
10 ὅστις γὰρ ὅλον τὸν νόμον (τηρήσῃ, πταίσῃ *N(k)O*) δὲ ἐν ἑνί, γέγονεν πάντων ἔνοχος.
For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
11 ὁ γὰρ εἰπὼν μὴ (μοιχεύσῃς, *NK(o)*) εἶπεν καὶ μὴ (φονεύσῃς. *NK(o)*) εἰ δὲ οὐ (μοιχεύεις φονεύεις *N(k)O*) δέ, γέγονας παραβάτης νόμου.
For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
12 οὕτως λαλεῖτε καὶ οὕτως ποιεῖτε ὡς διὰ νόμου ἐλευθερίας μέλλοντες κρίνεσθαι.
So speak, and so do, as those who are to be judged by a law of freedom.
13 ἡ γὰρ κρίσις ἀνέλεος τῷ μὴ ποιήσαντι ἔλεος· (καὶ *k*) (κατακαυχᾶται ἔλεος *NK(o)*) κρίσεως.
For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
14 Τί τὸ ὄφελος, ἀδελφοί μου, ἐὰν πίστιν λέγῃ τις ἔχειν, ἔργα δὲ μὴ ἔχῃ; μὴ δύναται ἡ πίστις σῶσαι αὐτόν;
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?
15 ἐὰν (δὲ *k*) ἀδελφὸς ἢ ἀδελφὴ γυμνοὶ ὑπάρχωσιν καὶ λειπόμενοι (ὦσιν *ko*) τῆς ἐφημέρου τροφῆς,
And if a brother or sister is poorly clothed and may be lacking in daily food,
16 εἴπῃ δέ τις αὐτοῖς ἐξ ὑμῶν· ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ, θερμαίνεσθε καὶ χορτάζεσθε, μὴ δῶτε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος, τί τὸ ὄφελος;
and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you did not give them the things the body needs, what good is it?
17 οὕτως καὶ ἡ πίστις, ἐὰν μὴ ἔχῃ ἔργα, νεκρά ἐστιν καθ᾽ ἑαυτήν.
Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.
18 Ἀλλ᾽ ἐρεῖ τις· σὺ πίστιν ἔχεις, κἀγὼ κἀγὼ ἔργα ἔχω· δεῖξόν μοι τὴν πίστιν σου (χωρὶς *N(k)O*) τῶν ἔργων (σου, *k*) κἀγώ κἀγώ σοι δείξω ἐκ τῶν ἔργων μου τὴν πίστιν (μου. *k*)
But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
19 σὺ πιστεύεις ὅτι εἷς ἐστιν ὁ θεός· καλῶς ποιεῖς· καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια πιστεύουσιν καὶ φρίσσουσιν.
You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.
20 θέλεις δὲ γνῶναι, ὦ ἄνθρωπε κενέ, ὅτι ἡ πίστις χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων (ἀργή *N(K)O*) ἐστιν;
But do you want to know, foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
21 Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη ἀνενέγκας Ἰσαὰκ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον;
Wasn't Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
22 βλέπεις ὅτι ἡ πίστις συνήργει τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἔργων ἡ πίστις ἐτελειώθη;
You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;
23 καὶ ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφὴ ἡ λέγουσα· ἐπίστευσεν δὲ Ἀβραὰμ τῷ θεῷ καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην καὶ φίλος θεοῦ ἐκλήθη.
and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God.
24 ὁρᾶτε (τοίνυν *K*) ὅτι ἐξ ἔργων δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος καὶ οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως μόνον.
You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25 Ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ῥαὰβ ἡ πόρνη οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη ὑποδεξαμένη τοὺς ἀγγέλους καὶ ἑτέρᾳ ὁδῷ ἐκβαλοῦσα;
In like manner was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
26 ὥσπερ γὰρ τὸ σῶμα χωρὶς πνεύματος νεκρόν ἐστιν, οὕτως καὶ ἡ πίστις χωρὶς (τῶν *ko*) ἔργων νεκρά ἐστιν.
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
