Παροιμίαι 3
1 Υιέ μου, μη λησμονής τους νόμους μου, και η καρδία σου ας φυλάττη τας εντολάς μου.
My son, forget not my teaching, and let thy heart keep my commandments;
2 Διότι μακρότητα ημερών και έτη ζωής και ειρήνην θέλουσι προσθέσει εις σε.
For length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they increase unto thee.
3 Έλεος και αλήθεια ας μη σε εγκαταλίπωσι· δέσον αυτάς περί τον τράχηλόν σου· εγχάραξον αυτάς επί την πλάκα της καρδίας σου·
Let kindness and truth not forsake thee; bind them about thy throat; write them upon the table of thy heart:
4 ούτω θέλεις ευρεί χάριν και εύνοιαν ενώπιον Θεού και ανθρώπων.
So shalt thou find grace and good favor in the eyes of God and man.
5 Έλπιζε επί Κύριον εξ όλης σου της καρδίας, και μη επιστηρίζεσαι εις την σύνεσίν σου·
Trust in the Lord with all thy heart: and upon thy own understanding do not rely.
6 εν πάσαις ταις οδοίς σου αυτόν γνώριζε, και αυτός θέλει διευθύνει τα διαβήματά σου.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will make level thy paths.
7 Μη φαντάζεσαι σεαυτόν σοφόν· φοβού τον Κύριον και έκκλινον από κακού.
Be not wise in thy own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
8 Τούτο θέλει είσθαι ίασις εις τα νεύρά σου και μυέλωσις εις τα οστά σου.
It will be healing to thy body, and marrow to thy bones.
9 Τίμα τον Κύριον από των υπαρχόντων σου και από των απαρχών πάντων των γεννημάτων σου·
Honor the Lord with thy wealth, and with the first-fruits of all thy products:
10 και θέλουσιν εμπλησθή αι σιτοθήκαι σου από αφθονίας και οι ληνοί σου θέλουσιν εκχειλίζει από νέου οίνου.
So shall thy storehouses be filled with plenty, and with new wine shall thy presses overflow.
11 Υιέ μου, μη καταφρόνει την παιδείαν του Κυρίου και μη αθύμει ελεγχόμενος υπ' αυτού.
The correction of the Lord, my son, do not despise; and feel no loathing for his admonition;
12 Διότι ο Κύριος ελέγχει όντινα αγαπά, καθώς και ο πατήρ τον υιόν, εις τον οποίον ευαρεστείται.
Because whomever the Lord loveth he admonisheth; and as a father who delighteth in [his] son.
13 Μακάριος ο άνθρωπος, όστις εύρηκε σοφίαν, και ο άνθρωπος, όστις απέκτησε σύνεσιν·
Happy the man that hath found wisdom, and the man that acquireth understanding.
14 Διότι το εμπόριον αυτής είναι καλήτερον παρά το εμπόριον του αργυρίου και το κέρδος αυτής παρά χρυσίον καθαρόν.
For the obtaining of her is better than the obtaining of silver, and better than fine gold is her product.
15 Είναι τιμιωτέρα πολυτίμων λίθων· και πάντα όσα επιθυμήσης δεν είναι αντάξια αυτής.
She is more precious than pearls; and all the things thou valuest are not equal unto her.
16 Μακρότης ημερών είναι εν τη δεξιά αυτής· εν τη αριστερά αυτής, πλούτος και δόξα.
Length of days is in her right hand: in her left are riches and honor.
17 Αι οδοί αυτής είναι οδοί τερπναί και πάσαι αι τρίβοι αυτής ειρήνη.
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 Είναι δένδρον ζωής εις τους εναγκαλιζομένους αυτήν· και μακάριοι οι κρατούντες αυτήν.
A tree of life is she to those that lay hold on her: and every one that firmly graspeth her will be made happy.
19 Διά της σοφίας εθεμελίωσεν ο Κύριος, εστερέωσε τους ουρανούς εν συνέσει.
The Lord hath through wisdom founded the earth: he hath established the heavens through understanding.
20 Διά της γνώσεως αυτού αι άβυσσοι ηνοίχθησαν και τα νέφη σταλάζουσι δρόσον.
By his knowledge were the depths split open, and the skies drop down the dew.
21 Υιέ μου, ας μη απομακρυνθώσι ταύτα από των οφθαλμών σου· φύλαττε ορθήν βουλήν και φρόνησιν·
My son, let them not be removed from thy eyes; keep [before thee] sound wisdom and discretion:
22 και θέλει είσθαι ζωή εις την ψυχήν σου και χάρις εις τον τράχηλόν σου.
And they will be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy throat.
23 Τότε θέλεις περιπατεί ασφαλώς την οδόν σου, και ο πους σου δεν θέλει προσκόψει.
Then wilt thou walk in safety on thy way, and thy foot will not strike [against aught]:
24 Όταν πλαγιάζης, δεν θέλεις τρομάζει· μάλιστα θέλεις πλαγιάζει, και ο ύπνος σου θέλει είσθαι γλυκύς.
When thou layest thyself down, thou shalt feel no dread; and as thou liest down, thy sleep shall be pleasant.
25 Δεν θέλεις τρομάξει από αιφνιδίου φόβου ουδέ από του ολέθρου των ασεβών, όταν επέλθη·
Thou needest not to be afraid of sudden dread, neither of the [unlooked-for] tempest over the wicked, when it cometh.
26 Διότι ο Κύριος θέλει είσθαι η ελπίς σου, και θέλει φυλάξει τον πόδα σου από του να πιασθή.
For the Lord will be thy confidence, and he will guard thy foot from being caught.
27 Μη αρνηθής το καλόν προς εκείνους, εις τους οποίους πρέπει, όταν ήναι εν τη χειρί σου να κάμνης αυτό.
Withhold not a benefit from him who is deserving it, when it is in the power of thy hand to do it.
28 Μη είπης προς τον πλησίον σου, Ύπαγε και επανάστρεψον και αύριον θέλω σοι δώσει· ενώ έχεις τούτο παρά σεαυτώ.
Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and return, and tomorrow will I give: when thou hast it by thee.
29 Μη μηχανεύου κακόν κατά του πλησίον σου, ενώ πεποιθώς κατοικεί μετά σου.
Contrive not against thy neighbor any evil, when he dwelleth in safety with thee.
30 Μη μάχου τινά αναιτίως, εάν δεν έκαμε κακόν εις σε.
Quarrel not with any man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
31 Μη ζήλευε τον βίαιον άνθρωπον και μη εκλέξης μηδεμίαν εκ των οδών αυτού·
Envy not the man of violence, and choose none of his ways.
32 διότι ο Κύριος βδελύττεται τον σκολιόν· το δε απόρρητον αυτού φανερόνεται εις τους δικαίους.
For the froward is an abomination to the Lord; but with the upright is his good-will.
33 Κατάρα Κυρίου εν τω οίκω του ασεβούς· ευλογεί δε την κατοικίαν των δικαίων.
The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked; but the habitation of the righteous will he bless.
34 Βεβαίως αυτός αντιτάττεται εις τους υπερηφάνους· εις δε τους ταπεινούς δίδει χάριν.
If [it concern] the scornful he will himself render them a scorn; but unto the lowly doth he give grace.
35 Οι σοφοί θέλουσι κληρονομήσει δόξαν· το δε ύψος των αφρόνων θέλει είσθαι η ατιμία.
The wise shall inherit glory; but fools shall obtain disgrace as their portion.
