Παροιμίαι 24
1 Μη ζήλευε τους κακούς ανθρώπους, μηδέ επιθύμει να ήσαι μετ' αυτών·
Be not thou envious of wicked men, neither crave to be with them;
2 διότι η καρδία αυτών μελετά καταδυνάστευσιν, και τα χείλη αυτών λαλούσι κακουργίας.
For, violence, their heart muttereth, and, mischief, their lips do speak.
3 Διά της σοφίας οικοδομείται οίκος και διά της συνέσεως στερεόνεται.
In wisdom, is a house builded, and, in understanding, is it established;
4 Και διά της γνώσεως τα ταμεία θέλουσι γεμισθή από παντός πολυτίμου και ευφροσύνου πλούτου.
And, in knowledge, chambers are filled, with all acquisitions, costly and fair.
5 Ο σοφός άνθρωπος ισχύει, και ο άνθρωπος ο φρόνιμος αυξάνει δύναμιν.
A wise man, is mighty, and, a man of knowledge, becometh alert in vigour.
6 Διότι διά σοφών βουλών θέλεις κάμει τον πόλεμόν σου· εκ του πλήθους δε των συμβούλων προέρχεται σωτηρία.
Surely, with concerted measures, shalt thou make for thyself war, and, success, lieth in the greatness of the counsellor.
7 Η σοφία είναι παραπολύ υψηλή διά τον άφρονα· δεν θέλει ανοίξει το στόμα αυτού εν τη πύλη.
Unattainable to a foolish man, are the dictates of wisdom, in the gate, he openeth not his mouth.
8 Όστις μελετά να πράξη κακόν, θέλει ονομασθή ανήρ κακεντρεχής.
He that deviseth to do mischief, him, shall men call, a master of plots.
9 Η μελέτη της αφροσύνης είναι αμαρτία· και ο χλευαστής βδέλυγμα εις τους ανθρώπους.
The purpose of folly, is sin, and, an abomination to mankind, is a buffoon.
10 Εάν μικροψυχήσης εν τη ημέρα της συμφοράς, μικρά είναι η δύναμίς σου.
Thou hast been slothful in the day of straitness, Strait, is thy strength.
11 Ελευθέρονε τους συρομένους εις θάνατον, και μη αποσύρου από των όντων εις ακμήν σφαγής.
Deliver thou such as are being led forth to death, and, them who are tottering to slaughter, oh that thou wouldst hold back!
12 Εάν είπης, Ιδού, ημείς δεν εξεύρομεν τούτο· δεν γνωρίζει ο σταθμίζων τας καρδίας; και ο φυλάττων την ψυχήν σου και αποδίδων εις έκαστον κατά τα έργα αυτού, δεν εξεύρει;
Though thou say, Lo! we knew not this, Shall not, he that proveth hearts, himself, discern? And, he that formeth thy soul, himself, know? and bring back to a son of earth according to his deed?
13 Υιέ μου, φάγε μέλι, διότι είναι καλόν· και κηρήθραν, διότι είναι γλυκεία επί του ουρανίσκον σου·
My son, eat thou honey, because it is good, —and droppings from the comb [because they are] sweet to thy palate:
14 Τοιαύτη θέλει είσθαι εις την ψυχήν σου η γνώσις της σοφίας· όταν εύρης αυτήν, τότε θέλεις λάβει αμοιβήν, και η ελπίς σου δεν θέλει εκκοπή.
Thus, take knowledge of wisdom, for thine own soul; If thou find it, then there is a future, and, thine expectation, shall not be cut off.
15 Μη στήνε παγίδα, ω άνομε, κατά της κατοικίας του δικαίου· μη ταράξης τον τόπον της αναπαύσεως αυτού·
Do not lie in wait, thou lawless man, against the home of the righteous, —neither destroy thou his place of rest;
16 διότι ο δίκαιος πίπτει επτάκις και σηκόνεται· αλλ' οι ασεβείς θέλουσι πέσει εις όλεθρον.
For, seven times, may the righteous fall and yet arise, but, lawless men, shall stumble into calamity.
17 Εις την πτώσιν του εχθρού σου μη χαρής· και εις το ολίσθημα αυτού ας μη ευφραίνεται η καρδία σου·
When thine enemy falleth, do not thou rejoice, and, when he stumbleth, let not thy heart exult:
18 Μήποτε ο Κύριος ίδη και φανή τούτο κακόν εις τους οφθαλμούς αυτού και μεταστρέψη τον θυμόν αυτού απ' αυτού.
Lest Yahweh see it, and it be wicked in his eyes, and he turn away from him his anger.
19 Μη αγανάκτει περί των πονηρευομένων· μη ζήλευε τους ασεβείς·
Burn not with vexation against evil doers, be not envious of lawless men;
20 διότι δεν θέλει έχει τέλος αγαθόν ο κακός· ο λύχνος των ασεβών θέλει σβεσθή.
For there shall be no future for the wicked, The lamp of the lawless, shall go out.
21 Υιέ μου, φοβού τον Κύριον και τον βασιλέα· και μη έχε συγκοινωνίαν μετά στασιαστών·
Revere thou Yahweh, my son, and the king, and, with the fickle, have thou no fellowship;
22 διότι η συμφορά αυτών θέλει επέλθει εξαίφνης· και τις γνωρίζει αμφοτέρων τας τιμωρίας;
For, suddenly, shall arise their calamity; and, the misfortune of their years, who knoweth?
23 Ταύτα προσέτι είναι διά τους σοφούς. Η προσωποληψία εν τη κρίσει δεν είναι καλόν.
These things also, concern the wise, To take note of faces in judgment, is not good.
24 Τον λέγοντα προς τον ασεβή, Είσαι δίκαιος, τούτον οι λαοί θέλουσι καταρασθή και τα έθνη θέλουσι βδελύττεσθαι·
He that saith to the lawless man, Righteous, thou art, peoples shall denounce him, populations shall curse him;
25 αλλ' εις τους ελέγχοντας αυτόν θέλει είσθαι χάρις, και ευλογία αγαθών θέλει ελθεί επ' αυτούς.
But, to reprovers, one should be pleasant, and, upon them, should come an excellent blessing:
26 Όστις αποκρίνεται λόγους ορθούς, είναι ως ο φιλών τα χείλη.
Lips, should one kiss with one who answereth in right words.
27 Διάταττε το έργον σου έξω και προετοίμαζε αυτό εις σεαυτόν εν τω αγρώ· και έπειτα οικοδόμησον τον οίκόν σου.
Prepare, in the open, thy work, and make ready, in the field, for thyself, Afterwards, shalt thou build thy house.
28 Μη ήσο μάρτυς άδικος κατά του πλησίον σου, μηδέ απάτα διά των χειλέων σου.
Do not become a needless witness against thy neighbour, so mightest thou open too wide thy lips:
29 Μη είπης, Καθώς έκαμεν εις εμέ, ούτω θέλω κάμει εις αυτόν· θέλω αποδώσει εις τον άνθρωπον κατά το έργον αυτού.
Do not say—According to what he hath done to me, so, will I do to him, I will repay every one according to his work.
30 Διέβαινον διά του αγρού του οκνηρού και διά του αμπελώνος του ανθρώπου του ενδεούς φρενών·
By the field of the sluggard, I passed, and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense;
31 και ιδού, πανταχού είχον βλαστήσει άκανθαι· κνίδαι είχον σκεπάσει το πρόσωπον αυτού, και το λιθόφραγμα αυτού ήτο κατακεκρημνισμένον.
And lo! there had come up all over it—thorns, there had covered the face thereof—thistles, and, the stone fence thereof, had been thrown down.
32 Τότε εγώ θεωρήσας εσυλλογίσθην εν τη καρδία μου· είδον, και έλαβον διδασκαλίαν.
So I observed it, for myself, I applied my heart, I looked—I accepted correction:
33 Ολίγος ύπνος, ολίγος νυσταγμός, ολίγη συμπλοκή των χειρών εις τον ύπνον·
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest:
34 έπειτα η πτωχεία σου έρχεται ως ταχυδρόμος, και η ένδειά σου ως ανήρ ένοπλος.
So shall come in, as a highwayman, thy poverty, and, thy want, as one armed with a shield.
