Παροιμίαι 18
1 Ο ιδιογνώμων ζητεί κατά την επιθυμίαν αυτού και εναντιόνεται εις παν ό, τι είναι ορθόν.
He that separateth himself [from God] seeketh his own desires: at every sound wisdom is he enraged.
2 Ο άφρων δεν ηδύνεται εις την σύνεσιν, αλλ' εις ό, τι φαντάζεται η καρδία αυτού.
A fool hath no delight in understanding, but in laying open what is in his heart.
3 Όταν έρχηται ο ασεβής, έρχεται και η καταφρόνησις· και μετά του ονείδους, η ατιμία.
When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with dishonorable acts, disgrace.
4 Οι λόγοι του στόματος του ανθρώπου είναι ύδατα βαθέα· και η πηγή της σοφίας, χείμαρρος αναπηδών.
Like deep waters are the words of a [wise] man's mouth, and a bubbling brook is the well-spring of wisdom.
5 Δεν είναι καλόν να προσωποληπτή τις τον ασεβή, διά να ανατρέπη το δίκαιον εν τη κρίσει.
It is not good to favor the person of the wicked, to wrest [the cause of the] righteous in judgment.
6 Τα χείλη του άφρονος εμβαίνουσιν εις έριδας, και το στόμα αυτού προσκαλεί ραπίσματα.
The lips of the fool come with contention, and his mouth calleth for blows.
7 Το στόμα του άφρονος είναι ο αφανισμός αυτού, και τα χείλη αυτού παγίς εις την ψυχήν αυτού.
The mouth of the fool is a destruction to himself, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
8 Οι λόγοι του ψιθυριστού καταπίνονται ηδέως και καταβαίνουσιν έως των ενδομύχων της κοιλίας.
The words of a whisperer are as wounds, and they go down indeed into the innermost parts of the body.
9 Ο οκνηρός εις το έργον αυτού είναι βεβαίως αδελφός του ασώτου.
He also that showeth himself slothful in his work is a brother to the destroyer.
10 Το όνομα του Κυρίου είναι πύργος οχυρός· ο δίκαιος, καταφεύγων εις αυτόν, είναι εν ασφαλεία.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower, whereunto the righteous runneth, and is placed in safety.
11 Τα αγαθά του πλουσίου είναι η οχυρά αυτού πόλις, και φαντάζεται αυτά ως υψηλόν τείχος.
The rich man's wealth is his strong town, and as a towering wall in his own conceit.
12 Προ του αφανισμού υψόνεται η καρδία του ανθρώπου· και η ταπείνωσις προπορεύεται της δόξης.
Before downfall the heart of man becometh haughty, and before honor goeth humility.
13 Το να αποκρίνηταί τις πριν ακούση, είναι εις αυτόν αφροσύνη και όνειδος.
When one returneth an answer before he understandeth [the question], it is folly unto him and shame.
14 Το πνεύμα του ανθρώπου θέλει υποστηρίζει την αδυναμίαν αυτού· αλλά το κατατεθλιμμένον πνεύμα τις δύναται να υποφέρη;
The spirit of a man will readily bear his disease; but a depressed spirit who can bear:
15 Η καρδία του φρονίμου αποκτά σύνεσιν· και το ωτίον των σοφών ζητεί γνώσιν.
The heart of the man of understanding will obtain knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
16 Το δώρον του ανθρώπου ανοίγει τόπον εις αυτόν, και φέρει αυτόν έμπροσθεν των μεγάλων.
A man's gift maketh room for him, and before great men will it lead him.
17 Ο πρωτολογών εν τη κρίσει αυτού φαίνεται δίκαιος· αλλ' ο αντίδικος αυτού έρχεται και εξελέγχει αυτόν.
He that is first in his cause seemeth just; but when his neighbor cometh, then will it be investigated.
18 Ο κλήρος παύει τας αντιλογίας και αποφασίζει μεταξύ των δυνατών.
The lot causeth disputes to cease, and it decideth between the mighty.
19 Αδελφός δυσαρεστηθείς υποτάσσεται δυσκολώτερα παρά οχυρά πόλις· αι δε διαφοραί αυτών είναι ως μοχλοί φρουρίου.
A brother offended is harder [to be won] than a strong town; and quarrels [among brothers] are like the bars of a castle.
20 Εκ των καρπών του στόματος του ανθρώπου θέλει χορτασθή η κοιλία αυτού· από του προϊόντος των χειλέων αυτού θέλει εμπλησθή.
From the fruit of a man's mouth is his body satisfied; with the product of his lips doth he satisfy himself.
21 Θάνατος και ζωή είναι εις την χείρα της γλώσσης· και οι αγαπώντες αυτήν θέλουσι φάγει τους καρπούς αυτής.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it will eat its fruit.
22 Όστις εύρηκε γυναίκα, εύρηκεν αγαθόν και απήλαυσε χάριν παρά Κυρίου.
Whoso hath found a wife hath found happiness, and hath obtained favor from the Lord.
23 Ο πένης λαλεί μετά ικεσιών· αλλ' ο πλούσιος αποκρίνεται μετά σκληρότητος.
The poor speaketh entreatingly; but the rich answereth roughly.
24 Ο άνθρωπος ο έχων φίλους πρέπει να φέρηται φιλικώς· και υπάρχει φίλος στενώτερος αδελφού.
A man's many companions are hurtful to him; but there is many a friend that cleaveth closer than a brother.
