Ἀριθμοί 20
1 Και ήλθον οι υιοί Ισραήλ, πάσα συναγωγή, εις την έρημον Σιν, τον πρώτον μήνα· και έμεινεν ο λαός εν Κάδης· και απέθανεν εκεί η Μαριάμ και ετάφη εκεί.
And the children of Israel, and all the multitude came into the desert of Sin, in the first month: and the people abode in Cades. And Mary died there, and was buried in the same place.
2 Και δεν ήτο ύδωρ διά την συναγωγήν· και συνηθροίσθησαν κατά του Μωϋσέως και κατά του Ααρών.
And the people wanting water, came together against Moses and Aaron:
3 Και ο λαός ελοιδόρει κατά του Μωϋσέως και είπον, λέγοντες, Είθε ν' απεθνήσκομεν, ότε οι αδελφοί ημών απέθανον ενώπιον του Κυρίου.
And making a sedition, they said: Would God we had perished among our brethren before the Lord.
4 Και διά τι ανεβιβάσατε την συναγωγήν του Κυρίου εις την έρημον ταύτην, διά να αποθάνωμεν εκεί ημείς και τα κτήνη ημών;
Why have you brought out the church of the Lord into the wilderness, that both we and our cattle should die?
5 και διά τι ανεβιβάσατε ημάς εκ της Αιγύπτου, διά να φέρητε ημάς εις τον κακόν τούτον τόπον; ούτος δεν είναι τόπος σποράς ή σύκων ή αμπέλων ή ροδίων· ουδέ ύδωρ υπάρχει διά να πίωμεν.
Why have you made us come up out of Egypt, and have brought us into this wretched place which cannot be sowed, nor bringeth forth figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink?
6 Και ήλθον ο Μωϋσής και ο Ααρών απ' έμπροσθεν της συναγωγής εις την θύραν της σκηνής του μαρτυρίου και έπεσον κατά πρόσωπον αυτών· και εφάνη εις αυτούς η δόξα του Κυρίου.
And Moses and Aaron leaving the multitude, went into the tabernacle of the covenant, and fell flat upon the ground, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord God, hear the cry of this people, and open to them thy treasure, a fountain of living water, that being satisfied, they may cease to murmur. And the glory of the Lord appeared over them.
7 Και ελάλησε Κύριος προς τον Μωϋσήν, λέγων,
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
8 Λάβε την ράβδον και συγκάλεσον την συναγωγήν συ και Ααρών ο αδελφός σου, και λαλήσατε προς την πέτραν ενώπιον αυτών· και θέλει δώσει τα ύδατα αυτής, και θέλεις εκβάλει εις αυτούς ύδωρ εκ της πέτρας· και θέλεις ποτίσει την συναγωγήν και τα κτήνη αυτών.
Take the rod, and assemble the people together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak to the rock before them, and it shall yield waters. And when thou hast brought forth water out of the rock, all the multitude and their cattle shall drink.
9 Και έλαβεν ο Μωϋσής την ράβδον απ' έμπροσθεν του Κυρίου, καθώς προσέταξεν εις αυτόν·
Moses therefore took the rod, which was before the Lord, as he had commanded him,
10 και συνεκάλεσαν Μωϋσής και ο Ααρών την συναγωγήν έμπροσθεν της πέτρας· και είπε προς αυτούς, Ακούσατε τώρα, σεις οι απειθείς· να σας εκβάλωμεν ύδωρ εκ της πέτρας ταύτης;
And having gathered together the multitude before the rock, he said to them: Hear, ye rebellious and incredulous: Can we bring you forth water out of this rock?
11 Και υψώσας ο Μωϋσής την χείρα αυτού εκτύπησε με την ράβδον αυτού την πέτραν δίς· και εξήλθον ύδατα πολλά· και έπιεν η συναγωγή και τα κτήνη αυτών.
And when Moses had lifted up his hand, and struck the rock twice with the rod, there came forth water in great abundance, so that the people and their cattle drank,
12 Και είπε Κύριος προς τον Μωϋσήν και προς τον Ααρών, Επειδή δεν με επιστεύσατε, διά να με αγιάσητε έμπροσθεν των υιών Ισραήλ, διά τούτο σεις δεν θέλετε φέρει την συναγωγήν ταύτην εις την γην, την οποίαν έδωκα εις αυτούς.
And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: Because you have not believed me, to sanctify me before the children of Israel, you shall not bring these people into the land, which I will give them.
13 τούτο είναι το ύδωρ Μεριβά· διότι οι υιοί Ισραήλ ελοιδόρησαν κατά του Κυρίου, και αυτός ηγιάσθη εν αυτοίς.
This is the Water of contradiction, where the children of Israel strove with words against the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.
14 Και απέστειλε Μωϋσής πρέσβεις από Κάδης προς τον βασιλέα του Εδώμ, λέγων, Ταύτα λέγει ο αδελφός σου Ισραήλ· συ εξεύρεις πάσαν την ταλαιπωρίαν ήτις μας εύρηκεν·
In the mean time Moses sent messengers from Cades to the king of Edom, to say: Thus saith thy brother Israel: Thou knowest all the labour that hath come upon us:
15 ότι κατέβησαν οι πατέρες ημών εις την Αίγυπτον και κατωκήσαμεν πολύν καιρόν εν Αιγύπτω· και οι Αιγύπτιοι κατεδυνάστευσαν ημάς και τους πατέρας ημών·
In what manner our fathers went down into Egypt, and there we dwelt a long time, and the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers.
16 και ανεβοήσαμεν προς τον Κύριον και αυτός εισήκουσε της φωνής ημών και απέστειλεν άγγελον και εξήγαγεν ημάς εκ της Αιγύπτου· και ιδού, είμεθα εν Κάδης, πόλει εις τα άκρα των ορίων σου·
And how we cried to the Lord, and he heard us, and sent an angel, who hath brought us out of Egypt. Lo, we are now in the city of Cades, which is in the uttermost of thy borders,
17 ας περάσωμεν, παρακαλώ, διά της γης σου· δεν θέλομεν περάσει διά των αγρών ή διά των αμπελώνων, ουδέ θέλομεν πίει ύδωρ εκ των φρεάτων· θέλομεν περάσει διά της βασιλικής οδού· δεν θέλομεν εκκλίνει δεξιά ή αριστερά, εωσού περάσωμεν τα όριά σου.
And we beseech thee that we may have leave to pass through thy country. We will not go through the fields, nor through the vineyards, we will not drink the waters of thy wells, but we will go by the common highway, neither turning aside to the right hand, nor to the left, till we are past thy borders.
18 Και είπε προς αυτόν ο Εδώμ, Δεν θέλεις περάσει διά της γης μου· ει δε μη, θέλω εξέλθει εν μαχαίρα εις συνάντησίν σου.
And Edom answered them: Thou shalt not pass by me: if thou dost I will come out armed against thee.
19 Και οι υιοί Ισραήλ είπον προς αυτόν, Ημείς διαβαίνομεν διά της λεωφόρου· και εάν εγώ και τα κτήνη μου πίωμεν εκ του ύδατός σου, θέλω πληρώσει αυτό· θέλω διαβή μόνον επί ποδός, ουδέν άλλο.
And the children of Israel said: We will go by the beaten way: and if we and our cattle drink of thy waters, we will give thee what is just: there shall be no difficulty in the price, only let us pass speedily.
20 Ο δε είπε, Δεν θέλεις διαβή. Και εξήλθεν ο Εδώμ εναντίον αυτού μετά πολλού λαού και εν χειρί ισχυρά.
But he answered: Thou shalt not pass. And immediately he came forth to meet them with an infinite multitude, and a strong hand,
21 Ούτως ηρνήθη ο Εδώμ να δώση διάβασιν εις τον Ισραήλ διά των ορίων αυτού· και εξέκλινεν ο Ισραήλ απ' αυτού.
Neither would he condescend to their desire to grant them passage through his borders. Wherefore Israel turned another way from him.
22 Και εσηκώθησαν οι υιοί Ισραήλ, πάσα η συναγωγή, από Κάδης και ήλθον εις το όρος Ωρ.
And when they had removed the camp from Cades, they came to mount Her, which is in the borders of the land of Edom:
23 Και ελάλησε Κύριος προς τον Μωϋσήν και προς τον Ααρών εν τω όρει Ωρ πλησίον των ορίων της γης Εδώμ, λέγων,
Where the Lord spoke to Moses:
24 Ο Ααρών θέλει προστεθή εις τον λαόν αυτού· διότι δεν θέλει εισέλθει εις την γην, την οποίαν έδωκα εις τους υιούς Ισραήλ· επειδή ηπειθήσατε εις τον λόγον μου εις το ύδωρ Μεριβά·
Let Aaron, saith he, go to his people: for he shall not go into the land which I have given the children of Israel, because he was incredulous to my words, at the waters of contradiction.
25 λάβε τον Ααρών και Ελεάζαρ τον υιόν αυτού και αναβίβασον αυτούς εις το όρος Ωρ·
Take Aaron and his son with him, and bring them up into mount Hor:
26 και έκδυσον τον Ααρών την στολήν αυτού και ένδυσον αυτήν Ελεάζαρ τον υιόν αυτού· και ο Ααρών θέλει προστεθή εις τον λαόν αυτού και θέλει αποθάνει εκεί.
And when thou hast stripped the father of his vesture, thou shalt vest therewith Eleazar his son: Aaron shall be gathered to his people, and die there.
27 Και έκαμεν ο Μωϋσής καθώς προσέταξεν ο Κύριος· και ανέβησαν εις το όρος Ωρ έμπροσθεν πάσης της συναγωγής.
Moses did as the Lord had commanded: and they went up into mount Hor before all the multitude.
28 Και εξέδυσεν ο Μωϋσής τον Ααρών την στολήν αυτού και ενέδυσεν αυτήν Ελεάζαρ τον υιόν αυτού· και απέθανεν ο Ααρών εκεί επί της κορυφής του όρους· και κατέβησαν Μωϋσής και Ελεάζαρ από του όρους.
And when he had stripped Aaron of his vestments, he vested Eleazar his son with them. And Aaron being dead in the top of the mountain, he came down with Eleazar.
29 Και είδε πάσα η συναγωγή ότι ετελεύτησεν ο Ααρών· και επένθησαν τον Ααρών τριάκοντα ημέρας πας ο οίκος Ισραήλ.
And all the multitude seeing that Aaron was dead, mourned for him thirty days throughout all their families.
