Ἀριθμοί 13
1 Και ελάλησε Κύριος προς τον Μωϋσήν λέγων,
And there, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 Απόστειλον άνδρας διά να κατασκοπεύσωσι την γην Χαναάν, την οποίαν εγώ δίδω εις τους υιούς Ισραήλ· από πάσης φυλής των πατέρων αυτών θέλετε αποστείλει ανά ένα άνδρα, έκαστον εξ αυτών αρχηγόν.
“Send men, who may examine the land of Canaan, which I will give to the sons of Israel, one from the rulers of each tribe.”
3 Και απέστειλεν αυτούς ο Μωϋσής διά προσταγής του Κυρίου εκ της ερήμου Φαράν. Πάντες οι άνδρες ούτοι ήσαν αρχηγοί των υιών Ισραήλ.
Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending, from the desert of Paran, leading men, whose names are these:
4 Και ταύτα ήσαν τα ονόματα αυτών· εκ της φυλής Ρουβήν, Σαμμουά ο υιός του Σακχούρ·
from the tribe of Ruben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
5 εκ της φυλής Συμεών, Σαφάτ ο υιός του Χορρί·
from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
6 εκ της φυλής Ιούδα, Χάλεβ ο υιός του Ιεφοννή·
from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
7 εκ της φυλής Ισσάχαρ, Ιγάλ ο υιός του Ιωσήφ·
from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
8 εκ της φυλής Εφραΐμ, Αυσή ο υιός του Ναυή·
from the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Nun;
9 εκ της φυλής Βενιαμίν, Φαλτί ο υιός του Ραφού·
from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
10 εκ της φυλής Ζαβουλών, Γαδιήλ ο υιός του Σουδί·
from the tribe of Zebulon, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
11 εκ της φυλής Ιωσήφ, εκ της φυλής Μανασσή, Γαδδί ο υιός του Σουσί·
from the tribe of Joseph, of the scepter of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
12 εκ της φυλής Δαν, Αμμιήλ ο υιός του Γεμαλί·
from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
13 εκ της φυλής Ασήρ, Σεθούρ ο υιός του Μιχαήλ·
from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
14 εκ της φυλής Νεφθαλί, Νααβί ο υιός του Βαυσί·
from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
15 εκ της φυλής Γαδ, Γεουήλ ο υιός του Μαχί.
from the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.
16 Ταύτα είναι τα ονόματα των ανδρών, τους οποίους απέστειλεν ο Μωϋσής διά να κατασκοπεύσωσι την γήν· και επωνόμασεν ο Μωϋσής τον Αυσή, τον υιόν του Ναυή, Ιησούν.
These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to examine the land. And he called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.
17 Και απέστειλεν αυτούς ο Μωϋσής διά να κατασκοπεύσωσι την γην Χαναάν· και είπε προς αυτούς, Ανάβητε από του μέρους τούτου της μεσημβρίας και θέλετε αναβή εις το όρος·
And so, Moses sent them to examine the land of Canaan, and he said to them: “Ascend by the south side. And when you arrive at the mountains,
18 και θεωρήσατε την γην, οποία είναι, και τον λαόν τον κατοικούντα εν αυτή, εάν ήναι δυνατός ή αδύνατος, ολίγοι ή πολλοί·
consider the land, as to what kind it may be, and the people, who are its inhabitants, whether they may be strong or weak, whether they may be few in number or many,
19 και οποία είναι η γη εν ή ούτοι κατοικούσι, καλή ήναι ή κακή· και οποίαι είναι αι πόλεις, τας οποίας ούτοι κατοικούσιν, ατείχιστοι ή περιτετειχισμέναι·
and the land itself, whether it is good or bad, what kind of cities, walled or without walls,
20 και οποία είναι η γη, παχεία ήναι ή λεπτή, εάν υπάρχωσιν εν αυτή δένδρα ή ουχί· και ανδρίζεσθε και φέρετε από των καρπών της γης. Αι δε ημέραι ήσαν αι ημέραι των πρώτων σταφυλών.
the soil, rich or barren, forested or without trees. Be strong, and bring us some of the fruits of the land.” Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes were ready to be eaten.
21 Και αναβάντες κατεσκόπευσαν την γην από της ερήμου Σιν έως Ρεώβ, κατά την είσοδον Αιμάθ.
And when they had ascended, they explored the land from the desert of Sin, all the way to Rehob, as one enters into Hamath.
22 Και ανέβησαν κατά το μεσημβρινόν, και ήλθον έως Χεβρών, όπου ήσαν Αχιμάν, Σεσαΐ και Θαλμαΐ, οι υιοί του Ανάκ. Η δε Χεβρών εκτίσθη επτά έτη προ της Τάνεως της Αιγύπτου.
And they ascended by the south side. And they arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman and Shishai and Talmai, the sons of Anak. For Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis, the city of Egypt.
23 Και ήλθον μέχρι της φάραγγος Εσχώλ, και έκοψαν εκείθεν κλήμα αμπέλου μετά ενός βότρυος σταφυλής, και εβάσταζον αυτό δύο επί ξύλου· έφεραν και ρόδια και σύκα.
And continuing on as far as the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, they cut off a vine with its grapes, which two men carried on a board. Likewise, they took from the pomegranates and the figs of that place,
24 Ο τόπος εκείνος ωνομάσθη φάραγξ Εσχώλ· διά τον βότρυν τον οποίον έκοψαν εκείθεν οι υιοί Ισραήλ.
which was called Nehel Eshcol, that is, the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, because the sons of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes from there.
25 Και επέστρεψαν, αφού κατεσκόπευσαν την γην, μετά τεσσαράκοντα ημέρας.
And those exploring the land returned after forty days, having circulated through the entire region.
26 Και πορευθέντες ήλθον προς τον Μωϋσήν, και προς τον Ααρών, και προς πάσαν την συναγωγήν των υιών Ισραήλ, εκ τη ερήμω Φαράν, εις Κάδης· και έφεραν απόκρισιν προς αυτούς, και προς πάσαν την συναγωγήν, και έδειξαν εις αυτούς τον καρπόν της γης.
And they went to Moses and Aaron, and to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, which is in Kadesh. And speaking to them, and to the entire multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land.
27 Και απήγγειλαν προς αυτόν, και είπον, Ήλθομεν εις την γην, εις την οποίαν απέστειλας εμάς, και είναι τωόντι γη ρέουσα γάλα και μέλι και ιδού, ο καρπός αυτής·
And they explained, saying: “We went into the land, to which you sent us, which, it is true, flows with milk and honey, as one can know by these fruits.
28 ο λαός όμως, ο κατοικών εν τη γη, είναι δυνατός, και αι πόλεις περιτετειχισμέναι, μεγάλαι σφόδρα· προς τούτοις, είδομεν εκεί και τους υιούς του Ανάκ·
But it has very strong occupants, and the cities are great and also walled. We saw the race of Anak there.
29 οι Αμαληκίται κατοικούσιν εν τη γη της μεσημβρίας· και οι Χετταίοι, και οι Ιεβουσαίοι, και οι Αμορραίοι, κατοικούσιν επί τα όρη· και οι Χαναναίοι κατοικούσι παρά την θάλασσαν και τας όχθας του Ιορδάνου.
Amalek lives in the south. The Hethite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the mountains. And truly, the Canaanite stays near the sea and around the streams of the Jordan.”
30 Και ο Χάλεβ κατεσίγασε τον λαόν έμπροσθεν του Μωϋσέως, και είπεν, Ας αναβώμεν ευθύς, και ας εξουσιάσωμεν αυτήν· διότι δυνάμεθα να κυριεύσωμεν αυτήν.
During these events, Caleb, to restrain the murmuring of the people who rose up against Moses, said, “Let us ascend and possess the land, for we will be able to obtain it.”
31 Οι άνθρωποι όμως, οι συναναβάντες μετ' αυτού, είπαν, Δεν δυνάμεθα να αναβώμεν επί τον λαόν τούτον, διότι είναι δυνατώτεροι ημών.
Yet truly, the others, who had been with him, were saying, “By no means are we able to ascend to this people, because they are stronger than we are.”
32 Και δυσφήμησαν την γην, την οποίαν κατεσκόπευσαν, προς τους υιούς Ισραήλ, λέγοντες, Η γη, την οποίαν διεπεράσαμεν διά να κατασκοπεύσωμεν αυτήν, είναι γη κατατρώγουσα τους κατοίκους αυτής· και πας ο λαός, τον οποίον είδομεν εν αυτή είναι άνδρες υπερμεγέθεις·
And before the sons of Israel they disparaged the land, which they had inspected, saying: “The land, which we viewed, devours its inhabitants. The people, upon whom we gazed, were of lofty stature.
33 και είδομεν εκεί τους γίγαντας, τους υιούς Ανάκ, του εκ των γιγάντων· και εβλέπομεν εαυτούς ως ακρίδας και τοιούτους έβλεπον ημάς αυτοί.
There, we saw some monsters among the sons of Anak, of the race of giants; by comparison with them, we seemed like locusts.”
