Κριταί 12
1 Και συνήχθησαν οι άνδρες Εφραΐμ, και επέρασαν προς βορράν και είπαν προς τον Ιεφθάε, Διά τι επέρασας να πολεμήσης εναντίον των υιών Αμμών, και δεν εκάλεσας ημάς να έλθωμεν μετά σου; τον οίκον σου θέλομεν καύσει επάνω σου εν πυρί.
A call went out to the men of Ephraim; they passed through Zaphon and said to Jephthah, “Why did you pass through to fight against the people of Ammon and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down over you.”
2 Και είπεν ο Ιεφθάε προς αυτούς, Εγώ και ο λαός μου ήλθομεν εις μεγάλην φιλονεικίαν μετά των υιών Αμμών· και σας έκραξα και δεν με εσώσατε εκ της χειρός αυτών·
Jephthah said to them, “I and my people were in a great conflict with the people of Ammon. When I called you, you did not rescue me from them.
3 και ιδών ότι δεν με εσώσατε, ερριψοκινδύνευσα την ζωήν μου και επέρασα εναντίον των υιών Αμμών, και ο Κύριος παρέδωκεν αυτούς εις την χείρα μου· διά τι λοιπόν ανέβητε προς εμέ σήμερον διά να με πολεμήσητε;
When I saw that you did not rescue me, When I saw that you did not rescue me, I put my life in my own hand and passed through against the people of Ammon, and Yahweh gave me victory. Why have you come to fight against me today?”
4 Τότε συνήθροισεν ο Ιεφθάε πάντας τους άνδρας της Γαλαάδ και επολέμησε τον Εφραΐμ· και επάταξαν οι άνδρες της Γαλαάδ τους Εφραϊμίτας, διότι είπαν, Φυγάδες του Εφραΐμ είσθε σεις οι Γαλααδίται, μεταξύ του Εφραΐμ και μεταξύ του Μανασσή.
Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and he fought against Ephraim. The men of Gilead attacked the men of Ephraim because they said, “You Gileadites are fugitives in Ephraim—in Ephraim and Manasseh.”
5 Και επίασαν αι Γαλααδίται διαβάσεις του Ιορδάνου προ των Εφραϊμιτών· και οπότε τις εκ των Εφραϊμιτών φυγάδων έλεγε, Θέλω να περάσω, τότε οι άνδρες της Γαλαάδ έλεγον προς αυτόν, Μήπως είσαι Εφραϊμίτης; Εάν εκείνος έλεγεν, Ουχί,
The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim. When any of the survivors of Ephraim said, “Let me go over the river,” the men of Gilead would say to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No,”
6 τότε έλεγον προς αυτόν, Ειπέ λοιπόν Σχίββωλεθ· και εκείνος έλεγε Σίββωλεθ· διότι δεν ηδύνατο να προφέρη ούτω. Τότε επίανον αυτόν και εφόνευον αυτόν εις τας διαβάσεις του Ιορδάνου. Και έπεσον κατ' εκείνον τον καιρόν τεσσαράκοντα δύο χιλιάδες Εφραϊμίται.
then they would say to him, “Say: Shibboleth,” and if he said “Sibboleth” (for he could not pronounce the word correctly), the Gileadites would seize him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.
7 Και έκρινεν ο Ιεφθάε τον Ισραήλ εξ έτη. Και απέθανεν ο Ιεφθάε ο Γαλααδίτης και ετάφη εν πόλει τινί της Γαλαάδ.
Jephthah served as a judge over Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
8 Και μετ' αυτόν έκρινε τον Ισραήλ Αβαισάν ο εκ Βηθλεέμ.
After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem served as a judge over Israel.
9 Και είχε τριάκοντα υιούς και τριάκοντα θυγατέρας, τας οποίας υπάνδρευσεν· έλαβε δε έξωθεν τριάκοντα νέας διά τους υιούς αυτού. Και έκρινε τον Ισραήλ επτά έτη.
He had thirty sons. He gave away thirty daughters in marriage, and he brought in thirty daughters of other men for his sons, from the outside. He judged Israel for seven years.
10 Και απέθανεν ο Αβαισάν και ετάφη εν Βηθλεέμ.
Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.
11 Και μετ' αυτόν έκρινε τον Ισραήλ Αιλών ο Ζαβουλωνίτης· και έκρινε τον Ισραήλ δέκα έτη.
After him Elon the Zebulunite served as judge over Israel. He judged Israel for ten years.
12 Και απέθανεν Αιλών ο Ζαβουλωνίτης και ετάφη εις Αιαλών εν τη γη Ζαβουλών.
Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13 Και μετ' αυτόν έκρινε τον Ισραήλ Αβδών, ο υιός του Ελλήλ, ο Πιραθωνίτης.
After him, Abdon son of Hillel the Pirathonite served as a judge over Israel.
14 Και είχε τεσσαράκοντα υιούς και τριάκοντα εγγόνους, επιβαίνοντας επί εβδομήκοντα πωλάρια· και έκρινε τον Ισραήλ οκτώ έτη.
He had forty sons and thirty grandsons. They rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel for eight years.
15 Και απέθανεν Αβδών ο υιός του Ελλήλ ο Πιραθωνίτης· και ετάφη εν Πιραθών εν γη Εφραΐμ, επί το όρος Αμαλήκ.
Abdon son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim in the hill country of the Amalekites.
