Ἐσθήρ 4

1 Και μαθών Μαροδοχαίος άπαν το γινόμενον, διέσχισε τα ιμάτια αυτού και ενεδύθη σάκκον εν σποδώ και εξήλθεν εις το μέσον της πόλεως και εβόα μετά βοής μεγάλης και πικράς·

When Mordecai had heard this, he tore his garments and put on sackcloth, strewing ashes on his head, and he cried out with a loud voice in the main street of the city, revealing the anguish of his soul.

2 και ήλθεν έως έμπροσθεν της βασιλικής πύλης· διότι ουδείς ηδύνατο να εισέλθη εις την βασιλικήν πύλην ενδεδυμένος σάκκον.

And he continued with this lamenting, even up to the gate of the palace, for no one clothed with sackcloth is permitted to enter the king’s court.

3 Και κατά πάσαν επαρχίαν, όπου έφθασεν η προσταγή του βασιλέως και το διάταγμα αυτού, ήτο μέγα πένθος μεταξύ των Ιουδαίων, και νηστεία και θρήνος και ολολυγμός· πολλοί εκοίτοντο με σάκκον και σποδόν.

Likewise, in all provinces, towns, and places where the king’s cruel decision arrived, there was extraordinary mourning among the Jews with fasting, wailing, and weeping, with many using sackcloth and ashes for their bed.

4 Εισήλθον δε αι θεράπαιναι της Εσθήρ και οι ευνούχοι αυτής, και απήγγειλαν τούτο προς αυτήν. Και εταράχθη σφόδρα η βασίλισσα· και έπεμψεν ιμάτια διά να ενδύσωσι τον Μαροδοχαίον και να εκβάλωσι τον σάκκον αυτού απ' αυτού· και δεν εδέχθη.

Then Esther’s maids and eunuchs went in and informed her. When she heard it, she was shocked, and she sent a garment to clothe him and to take away the sackcloth, but he would not accept it.

5 Τότε εκάλεσεν η Εσθήρ τον Αθάχ, εκ των ευνούχων του βασιλέως, τον οποίον είχε διορίσει εις την υπηρεσίαν αυτής, και προσέταξεν εις αυτόν περί του Μαροδοχαίου, διά να μάθη τι τούτο, και διά τι τούτο.

And she sent for Hathach the eunuch, whom the king had appointed to minister to her, and she instructed him to go to Mordecai and to discern from him why he was doing this.

6 Και εξήλθεν ο Αθάχ προς τον Μαροδοχαίον εις την πλατείαν της πόλεως, την απέναντι της βασιλικής πύλης.

And departing, Hathach went to Mordecai, who was standing in the street of the city, in front of the palace entrance.

7 Και εφανέρωσε προς αυτόν ο Μαροδοχαίος άπαν το γεγονός εις αυτόν, και το ποσόν του αργυρίου το οποίον ο Αμάν υπεσχέθη να μετρήση εις τα θησαυροφυλάκια του βασιλέως διά τους Ιουδαίους· διά να απολέση αυτούς.

He told him everything that had happened, how Haman had promised to transfer silver into the king’s treasury for the death of the Jews.

8 Και έδωκεν εις αυτόν το αντίγραφον του γράμματος της διαταγής, της εκδοθείσης εν Σούσοις διά να αφανίσωσιν αυτούς, διά να δείξη αυτό εις την Εσθήρ, και να απαγγείλη προς αυτήν και να παραγγείλη εις αυτήν να εισέλθη προς τον βασιλέα, να παρακαλέση αυτόν και να κάμη αίτησιν προς αυτόν υπέρ του λαού αυτής.

Also, he gave him a copy of the edict that was hanging up in Susa, so that he would show it to the queen and advise her to go in to the king and beg him on behalf of her people.

9 Και ήλθεν ο Αθάχ και απήγγειλε προς την Εσθήρ τους λόγους του Μαροδοχαίου.

And Hathach returned and informed Esther of all that Mordecai had said.

10 Η δε Εσθήρ ελάλησε προς τον Αθάχ και έδωκεν εις αυτόν προσταγήν προς τον Μαροδοχαίον,

She answered him, and ordered him say to Mordecai:

11 Πάντες οι δούλοι του βασιλέως, και ο λαός των επαρχιών του βασιλέως, εξεύρουσιν, ότι όστις, ανήρ ή γυνή, εισέλθη προς τον βασιλέα εις την ενδοτέραν αυλήν άκλητος, εις νόμος αυτού είναι να θανατόνηται, εκτός εκείνου προς τον οποίον ο βασιλεύς εκτείνει το χρυσούν σκήπτρον διά να ζήση· αλλ' εγώ δεν προσεκλήθην να εισέλθω προς τον βασιλέα ήδη τριάκοντα ημέρας.

“All the servants of the king and all the provinces that are under his realm understand that anyone, whether man or woman, who enters the king’s inner court, who has not been summoned, is immediately to be put to death without any delay, unless the king should happen to extend the golden scepter to him, as a sign of clemency, so that he will be able to live. How then can I go in to the king, when, for thirty days now, I have not been called to him?”

12 Και απήγγειλαν προς τον Μαροδοχαίον τους λόγους της Εσθήρ.

And when Mordecai had heard this, he again sent word to Esther, saying, “Do not think that you will save so much as your own soul, just because you are in the king’s house and are above all the Jews.

13 Τότε ο Μαροδοχαίος παρήγγειλε ν' αποκριθώσι προς την Εσθήρ, Μη στοχάζεσαι εν σεαυτή ότι συ εκ πάντων των Ιουδαίων θέλεις σωθή εν τω οίκω του βασιλέως·

And when Mordecai had heard this, he again sent word to Esther, saying, “Do not think that you will save so much as your own soul, just because you are in the king’s house and are above all the Jews.

14 διότι εάν σιωπήσης διόλου εν τω καιρώ τούτω, θέλει ελθεί άλλοθεν αναψυχή και σωτηρία εις τους Ιουδαίους, συ δε και ο οίκος του πατρός σου θέλετε απολεσθή· και τις εξεύρει εάν συ ήλθες εις την βασιλείαν διά τοιούτον καιρόν οποίος ούτος;

For, if you remain silent now, the Jews will be delivered through some other opportunity, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for this reason, so that you would be prepared for such a time as this?”

15 Τότε προσέταξεν η Εσθήρ να αποκριθώσι προς τον Μαροδοχαίον·

And again Esther sent to Mordecai in these words:

16 Ύπαγε, σύναξον πάντας τους Ιουδαίους τους ευρισκομένους εν Σούσοις, και νηστεύσατε υπέρ εμού και μη φάγητε και μη πίητε τρεις ημέρας, νύκτα και ημέραν· και εγώ και αι θεράπαιναί μου θέλομεν νηστεύσει ομοίως· και ούτω θέλω εισέλθει προς τον βασιλέα, το οποίον δεν είναι κατά τον νόμον· και αν απολεσθώ, ας απολεσθώ.

“Go and gather together all the Jews whom you will find in Susa, and pray for me. Neither eat nor drink for three days and three nights, and I will fast with my handmaids similarly, and then I will go in to the king, doing what is against the law, not having been called, and so expose myself to mortal danger.”

17 Και απελθών ο Μαροδοχαίος έκαμε κατά πάντα όσα προσέταξεν εις αυτόν η Εσθήρ.

And so Mordecai went, and he did everything that Esther had instructed him.
